  • Magnetic Reconnection in Three Dimensions : Observations of Electromagnetic Drift Waves in the Adjacent Current Sheet
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 124:12, s. 10104-10118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic reconnection at the subsolar magnetopause is persistently accompanied by strong fluctuations of the magnetic field (B), plasma density (n), and all components of the electric field (E) and current (J). The strongest fluctuations are at frequencies below the lower hybrid frequency and observed in a thin, intense current sheet adjacent to the electron diffusion region. In this current sheet, the background magnitudes of B and n are changing considerably, creating an inhomogeneous plasma environment. We show that the fluctuations in B and n are consistent with an oscillatory displacement of the current sheet in the surface normal direction. The displacement is propagating parallel to the magnetic reconnection X line. Wavelengths are on the order of or longer than the thickness of the current sheet to which they are confined, so we label these waves electromagnetic drift waves. E and J fluctuations are more complex than a simple displacement. They have significant variations in the component along B, which suggest that the drift waves also may be confined along B. The current sheet is supported by an electron drift driven by normal electric field, which, in turn, is balanced by an ion pressure gradient. We suggest that wave growth comes from an instability related to the drift between the electrons and ions. We discuss the possibility that drift waves can displace or penetrate into the electron diffusion region giving magnetic reconnection three-dimensional structure. Drift waves may corrugate the X line, possibly breaking the X line and generating turbulence.

  • Surface Energy Engineering for Tunable Wettability through Controlled Synthesis of MoS2
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 14:8, s. 4314-4321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MoS2 is an important member of the transition metal dichalcogenides that is emerging as a potential 2D atomically thin layered material for low power electronic and optoelectronic applications. However, for MoS2 a critical fundamental question of significant importance is how the surface energy and hence the wettability is altered at the nanoscale in particular, the role of crystallinity and orientation. This work reports on the synthesis of large area MoS2 thin films on insulating substrates (SiO2/Si and Al2O3) with different surface morphology via vapor phase deposition by varying the growth temperatures. The samples were examined using transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. From contact angle measurements, it is possible to correlate the wettability with crystallinity at the nanoscale. The specific surface energy for few layers MoS2 is estimated to be about 46.5 mJ/m2. Moreover a layer thickness-dependent wettability study suggests that the lower the thickness is, the higher the contact angle will be. Our results shed light on the MoS2–water interaction that is important for the development of devices based on MoS2 coated surfaces for microfluidic applications.

  • Rapid determination of Bond rod-mill work index by modeling the grinding kinetics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Advanced Powder Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-8831 .- 1568-5527. ; 24:1, s. 441-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Generally, Bond work index is a common method for selecting comminution equipment as well as estimation of grinding efficiency and calculating required power. In the current research, a simple, fast and accurate procedure is introduced to find the rod-mill work index based on the conventional Bond work index. The grinding experiments were carried out on four typical samples of iron, copper, manganese and lead–zinc ore with three test-sieves in specified time periods and aimed to shortening the procedure. Furthermore, the grinding kinetics and mass balance equations were applied to model the standard Bond rod-mill work index. For comparing the standard Bond rod-mill work index and the new modeled method, work index (Wi) and produced fine particles in a cycle (Gi) for the four samples determined. The performed paired Student’s t-test results indicated that the Standard Deviation for Gi and Wi obtained by the shortened method are respectively 0.50 and 0.58 in respect of traditional Bond method.

  • Synthetic biology tools for environmental protection
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Biotechnology Advances. - 0734-9750. ; 68
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synthetic biology transforms the way we perceive biological systems. Emerging technologies in this field affect many disciplines of science and engineering. Traditionally, synthetic biology approaches were commonly aimed at developing cost-effective microbial cell factories to produce chemicals from renewable sources. Based on this, the immediate beneficial impact of synthetic biology on the environment came from reducing our oil dependency. However, synthetic biology is starting to play a more direct role in environmental protection. Toxic chemicals released by industries and agriculture endanger the environment, disrupting ecosystem balance and biodiversity loss. This review highlights synthetic biology approaches that can help environmental protection by providing remediation systems capable of sensing and responding to specific pollutants. Remediation strategies based on genetically engineered microbes and plants are discussed. Further, an overview of computational approaches that facilitate the design and application of synthetic biology tools in environmental protection is presented.

  • Standardized evaluation system for left ventricular segmentation algorithms in 3D echocardiography.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0278-0062 .- 1558-254X. ; 35:4, s. 967-977
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Real-time 3D Echocardiography (RT3DE) has been proven to be an accurate tool for left ventricular (LV) volume assessment. However, identification of the LV endocardium remains a challenging task, mainly because of the low tissue/blood contrast of the images combined with typical artifacts. Several semi and fully automatic algorithms have been proposed for segmenting the endocardium in RT3DE data in order to extract relevant clinical indices, but a systematic and fair comparison between such methods has so far been impossible due to the lack of a publicly available common database. Here, we introduce a standardized evaluation framework to reliably evaluate and compare the performance of the algorithms developed to segment the LV border in RT3DE. A database consisting of 45 multivendor cardiac ultrasound recordings acquired at different centers with corresponding reference measurements from 3 experts are made available. The algorithms from nine research groups were quantitatively evaluated and compared using the proposed online platform. The results showed that the best methods produce promising results with respect to the experts' measurements for the extraction of clinical indices, and that they offer good segmentation precision in terms of mean distance error in the context of the experts' variability range. The platform remains open for new submissions.

  • Modelling of Maintenance Data
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Current Trends in Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety. - Cham : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783319235967 - 9783319235974 ; , s. 409-424
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The modelling of maintenance data starts with the black-box approach (where the model selection is based solely on the maintenance data) and then through the grey-box approach for proper analysis (where one can gain insights to build better models). These models allow for more effective maintenance of the object. This paper deals with the grey-box approach to modelling. It discusses the process of modelling and illustrates this through a real case study

  • Data management in maintenance outsourcing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Reliability Engineering & System Safety. - : Elsevier BV. - 0951-8320 .- 1879-0836. ; 142, s. 100-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most businesses view maintenance as tasks carried out by technicians and the data collected is mostly cost related. There is a growing trend towards outsourcing of maintenance and the data collection issues are not addressed properly in most maintenance service contracts. Effective maintenance management requires proper data management - data collection and analysis for decision-making. This requires a proper framework and when maintenance is outsourced it raises several issues and challenges. The paper develops a framework for data management when maintenance is outsourced and looks at a real case study that highlights the need for proper data management.

  • Effect of test-caused degradation on the unavailability of standby safety components
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nuclear engineering and technology. - : Elsevier. - 1738-5733 .- 2234-358X. ; 56:2, s. 526-535
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a safety-critical standby component unavailability model that contains aging effects caused by the elapsed time from installation, component degradation due to surveillance tests, and imperfect maintenance actions. An application of the model to a Motor-Operated Valve and a Motor-Driven Pump involved in the HPIS of a VVER/1000-V446 nuclear power plant is demonstrated and compared with other existing models at component and system levels. In addition, the effects of different unavailability models are reflected in the NPP's risk criterion, i.e., core damage frequency, over five maintenance periods. The results show that, compared with other models that do not simultaneously consider the full effects of degradation and maintenance impacts, the proposed model realistically evaluates the unavailabilities of the safety-related components and the involved systems as a plant age function. Therefore, it can effectively reflect the age-dependent CDF impact of a given testing and maintenance policy in a specified time horizon.
