  • Highly efficient composite electrolyte for natural gas fed fuel cell
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 41:16, s. 6972-6979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have the ability to operate with different variants of hydro carbon fuel such as biogas, natural gas, methane, ethane, syngas, methanol, ethanol, hydrogen and any other hydrogen rich gas. Utilization of these fuels in SOFC, especially the natural gas, would significantly reduce operating cost and would enhance the viability for commercialization of FC technology. In this paper, the performance of two indigenously manufactured nanocomposite electrolytes; barium and samarium doped ceria (BSDC-carbonate); and lanthanum and samarium doped ceria (co-precipitation method LSDC-carbonate) using natural gas as fuel is discussed. The nanocomposite electrolytes were synthesized using co-precipitation and wet chemical methods (here after referred to as nano electrolytes). The structure and morphology of the nano electrolytes were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The fuel cell performance (OCV) was tested at temperature (300-600 °C). The ionic conductivity of the nano electrolytes were measured by two probe DC method. The detailed composition analysis of nano electrolytes was performed with the help of Raman Spectroscopy. Electrochemical study has shown an ionic conductivity of 0.16 Scm-1 at 600 °C for BSDC-carbonate in hydrogen atmosphere, which is higher than conventional electrolytes SDC and GDC under same conditions. In this article reasonably good ionic conductivity of BSDC-carbonate, at 600 °C, has also been achieved in air atmosphere which is comparatively greater than the conventional SDC and GDC electrolytes.

  • Toward Industrial Exploitation of THz Frequencies : Integration of SiGe MMICs in Silicon-Micromachined Waveguide Systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2156-342X .- 2156-3446. ; 9:6, s. 624-636
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new integration concept for terahertz (THz) systems is presented in this article, wherein patterned silicon-on-insulator wafers form all DC, IF, and RF networks in a homogeneous medium, in contrast to existing solutions. Using this concept, silicon-micromachined waveguides are combined with silicon germanium (SiGe) monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) for the first time. All features of the integration platform lie in the waveguide’s H-plane. Heterogeneous integration of SiGe chips is achieved using a novel in-line H-plane transition. As an initial step toward complete systems, we outline the design, fabrication, and assembly of back-to-back transition structures, for use at D-band frequencies (110ï¿œ170 GHz). Special focus is given to the industrial compatibility of all components, fabrication, and assembly processes, with an eye on the future commercialization of THz systems. Prototype devices are assembled via two distinct processes, one of which utilizes semiautomated die-bonding tools. Positional and orientation tolerances for each process are quantified. An accuracy of $\pm \text3.5\; μ \textm$, $\pm \text1.5 °$ is achieved. Measured $S$-parameters for each device are presented. The insertion loss of a single-ended transition, largely due to MMIC substrate losses, is 4.2ï¿œ5.5 dB, with a bandwidth of 25 GHz (135ï¿œ160 GHz). Return loss is in excess of 5 dB. Measurements confirm the excellent repeatability of the fabrication and assembly processes and, thus, their suitability for use in high-volume applications. The proposed integration concept is highly scalable, permitting its usage far into the THz frequency spectrum. This article represents the first stage in the shift to highly compact, low-cost, volume-manufacturable THz waveguide systems.

  • Liquid-like Interfaces Mediate Structural Phase Transitions in Lead Halide Perovskites
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Matter. - : Elsevier BV. - 2590-2393 .- 2590-2385. ; 3:2, s. 534-545
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microscopic pathways of structural phase transitions inmetal halide perovskites are difficult to probe because they occur over disparate time and length scales and because electron-based microscopies typically used to directly probe nanoscale dynamics of phase transitions often damage metal halide perovskite materials. Using in situ nanoscale cathodoluminescence microscopy with low electron beam exposure, we visualize nucleation and growth in the thermally driven transition to the perovskite phase in hundreds of non-perovskite phase nanowires. In combination with molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that the transformation does not follow a simple martensitic mechanism, but proceeds despite a substantial energy barrier via ion diffusion through a liquid-like interface between the two structures. While cations are disordered in this liquid-like region, the halide ions retain substantial spatial correlations. This detailed picture not only reveals how phase transitions between disparate structures can proceed, but also opens the possibility to control such processes.

  • A networking laboratory for the developing world
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Magazine. - 0163-6804 .- 1558-1896. ; 42:2, s. 106-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet-based communication is assuming an increasingly important role in the developing world. It is thus crucial that students be exposed to contemporary networking equipment in a realistic setting, in order to connect theoretical material taught in lecture courses with the realities of physical hardware. To this end, a large computer networking laboratory has been set up to provide a realistic environment for teaching internetworking concepts. This laboratory provides university-level students with a testbed to experiment with fundamental issues of internetworking in a way that cannot be provided by simulators and to a degree of rigor not possible with the commonly available laboratory setups designed for technicians. We describe the motivations for setting up the laboratory, its network structure and equipment, and the type of experiments students conduct. The laboratory structure is influenced heavily by the limited funds-at our disposal - a common problem in the developing world. Many of the problems we faced in setting up our equipment (such as the crucial impact of proper electrical grounding on system performance) are not ordinarily encountered in developed nations. Our experiences are thus likely to be of value to others in the developing world who are contemplating setting up experimental facilities for teaching networking.

  • AaaS and MaaS for reduced environmental and climate impact of transport : Creating indicators to identify promising digital service innovations for reduced demand and optimized use of transport resources
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ICT4S2018. 5th International Conference on Information and Communication Technology for Sustainability. - : EasyChair. ; 52, s. 137-152
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a set of indicators is presented that aim to identify promising service innovations for Accessibility as a Service (AaaS) and Mobility as a Service (MaaS); services that potentially can reduce the demand for transport and optimize use of transport infrastructure and vehicles in urban regions. The proposed indicators characterize service innovations from three different perspectives: 1) Is the service innovation environmentally sustainable? Does it reduce negative impacts on the environment (reduce carbon emissions, use of space), 2) Is it rewardable? Is value created for an organization? Does it make use of new sustainable business models, and 3) How widely is the service spread? How many users are there, what is the geographic distribution and what level of societal transition has occurred? The developed indicators are meant to guide policy makers, decision makers, business developers and academia in the prioritizations that need to be made when allocating land and resources to the most promising and powerful innovations, moving towards more environmentally friendly mobility and accessibility. The next step will be to test the indicators to identify and categorize existing and emerging new services, ideas, pilots and prototypes. The results of this second step will be presented in our next article.

  • MetalMUMPs resonator for acetone vapor sensing
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2017 IEEE regional symposium on micro and nanoelectronics (RSM). - : IEEE. - 9781509040292 ; , s. 5-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acetone vapor monitoring is essential in workplace for human health and safety, where exposure to acetone concentration more than 176 parts per million (ppm) can cause damage to eyes, liver, kidneys and central nervous system. In addition, acetone in exhaled breath is known to be good biomarker for non-invasive screening of diabetes. The most common used acetone vapor sensors are based on metal oxide semiconductor sensors, which work at higher temperatures, and hence consume more power. This paper reports MetalMUMPs device for acetone vapor sensing for environmental monitoring. The device is based on electrothermal actuation and capacitive sensing using differential capacitance measurement technique. MS3110 universal capacitive readout circuit was used to readout the small change of the static capacitance when the device is actuated using 0.71 Vrms with a driving frequency range of 0.5 kHz-8 kHz. The output signal of the circuit is given as a voltage and it can be directly related to the capacitance change. The output voltage change was found to increase linearly with increasing the acetone vapor concentration from 100 ppm to 500 ppm with a concentration sensitivity of 0.65 mV/ppm.

  • Effect of severe cold-rolling and annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties of AlCoCrFeNi 2.1 eutectic high entropy alloy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. - 1757-8981 .- 1757-899X. ; 194:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility of microstructural refinement and improvement of mechanical properties by severe cold-rolling was investigated in an AlCoCrFeNi2.1 lamellar eutectic high entropy alloy (EHEA). The as-cast alloy revealed fine scale eutectic mixture of L12 (ordered FCC) and B2 (ordered BCC) phases. During severe cold-rolling up to 90% reduction in thickness the B2 phase maintained the ordered structure, while the L12 phase showed the evolution of a nanocrystalline structure and progressive disordering. Annealing of the severely cold-rolled material resulted in the formation of duplex microstructures composed of two different phases with equiaxed morphologies and significant resistance to grain growth up to 1200°C. Annealing at 1000°C resulted in an optimum strength-ductility balance with the tensile strength of 1175 MPa and the total elongation of 23%. The present results showed that severe cold-rolling and annealing can impart very attractive mechanical properties in complex EHEAs.
