  • Trans-ancestry genome-wide association study identifies 12 genetic loci influencing blood pressure and implicates a role for DNA methylation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 47:11, s. 1282-1293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We carried out a trans-ancestry genome-wide association and replication study of blood pressure phenotypes among up to 320,251 individuals of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. We find genetic variants at 12 new loci to be associated with blood pressure (P = 3.9 × 10−11 to 5.0 × 10−21). The sentinel blood pressure SNPs are enriched for association with DNA methylation at multiple nearby CpG sites, suggesting that, at some of the loci identified, DNA methylation may lie on the regulatory pathway linking sequence variation to blood pressure. The sentinel SNPs at the 12 new loci point to genes involved in vascular smooth muscle (IGFBP3, KCNK3, PDE3A and PRDM6) and renal (ARHGAP24, OSR1, SLC22A7 and TBX2) function. The new and known genetic variants predict increased left ventricular mass, circulating levels of NT-proBNP, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (P = 0.04 to 8.6 × 10−6). Our results provide new evidence for the role of DNA methylation in blood pressure regulation.

  • Electrode Separators for the Next-Generation Alkaline Water Electrolyzers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ACS Energy Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2380-8195. ; 8:4, s. 1900-1910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-gigawatt-scale hydrogen production by water electrolysis is central in the green transition when it comes to storage of energy and forming the basis for sustainable fuels and materials. Alkaline water electrolysis plays a key role in this context, as the scale of implementation is not limited by the availability of scarce and expensive raw materials. Even though it is a mature technology, the new technological context of the renewable energy system demands more from the systems in terms of higher energy efficiency, enhanced rate capability, as well as dynamic, part-load, and differential pressure operation capability. New electrode separators that can support high currents at small ohmic losses, while effectively suppressing gas crossover, are essential to achieving this. This Focus Review compares the three main development paths that are currently being pursued in the field with the aim to identify the advantages and drawbacks of the different approaches in order to illuminate rational ways forward.

  • Hybrid Nanoparticle-Liposome Detection of Phospholipase Activity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nano letters (Print). - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 11:4, s. 1401-1405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A flexible nanoparticle-based phospholipase (PL) assay is demonstrated in which the enzymatic substrate is decoupled from the nanoparticle surface. Liposomes are loaded with a polypeptide that is designed to heteroassociate with a second polypeptide immobilized on gold nanoparticies. Release of this polypeptide from the liposornes, triggered by PL, induces a folding-dependent nanoparticle bridging aggregation. The colorimetric response from this aggregation enables straightforward and continuous detection of PL in the picomolar range. The speed, specificity, and flexibility of this assay make it appropriate for a range of applications, from point of care diagnostics to high throughput pharmaceutical screening.

  • Regiospecific One-Pot Synthesis of Diaryliodonium Tetrafluoroborates from Arylboronic Acids and Aryl Iodides
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-3263 .- 1520-6904. ; 73:12, s. 4602-4607
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diaryliodonium salts have recently received considerable attention as mild arylation reagents in organic synthesis. This paper describes a regiospecific, sequential one-pot synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryliodonium tetrafluoroborates, which are the most popular salts in metal-catalyzed arylations. The protocol is fast and high-yielding and has a large substrate scope. Furthermore, the corresponding diaryliodonium triflates can conveniently be obtained via an in situ anion exchange.

  • Illicit Network Dynamics: The Formation and Evolution of a Drug Trafficking Network
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of quantitative criminology. - : SPRINGER/PLENUM PUBLISHERS. - 0748-4518 .- 1573-7799. ; 35:2, s. 237-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesThe project aims to: (1) investigate structural and functional changes in an Australian drug trafficking network across time to determine ways in which such networks form and evolve. To meet this aim, the project will answer the following research questions: (1) What social structural changes occur in drug trafficking networks across time? (2) How are these structural changes related to roles/tasks performed by network members? (3) What social processes can account for change over time in drug trafficking networks?MethodThe relational data on the network was divided into four two years periods. Actors were allocated to specific roles. We applied a stochastic actor-oriented model to explain the dynamics of the network across time. Using RSiena, we estimated a number of models with the key objectives of investigating: (1) the effect of roles only; (2) the endogenous effect of degree-based popularity (Matthew effect); (3) the endogenous effect of balancing connectivity with exposure (preference for indirect rather than direct connections); (4) how degree-based popularity is moderated by tendencies towards reach and exposure.ResultsPreferential attachment is completely moderated by a preference for having indirect ties, meaning that centralization is a result of actors preferring indirect connections to many others and not because of a preference for connecting to popular actors. Locally, actors seek cohesive relationships through triadic closure.ConclusionsActors do not seek to create an efficient network that is highly centralized at the expense of security. Rather, actors strive to optimize security through triadic closure, building trust, and protecting themselves and actors in close proximity through the use of brokers that offer access to the rest of the network.

  • Separators and Membranes for Advanced Alkaline Water Electrolysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Chemical Reviews. - 1520-6890. ; 124:10, s. 6393-6443
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) uses diaphragms to separate anode and cathode and is operated with 5–7 M KOH feed solutions. The ban of asbestos diaphragms led to the development of polymeric diaphragms, which are now the state of the art material. A promising alternative is the ion solvating membrane. Recent developments show that high conductivities can also be obtained in 1 M KOH. A third technology is based on anion exchange membranes (AEM); because these systems use 0–1 M KOH feed solutions to balance the trade-off between conductivity and the AEM’s lifetime in alkaline environment, it makes sense to treat them separately as AEM WE. However, the lifetime of AEM increased strongly over the last 10 years, and some electrode-related issues like oxidation of the ionomer binder at the anode can be mitigated by using KOH feed solutions. Therefore, AWE and AEM WE may get more similar in the future, and this review focuses on the developments in polymeric diaphragms, ion solvating membranes, and AEM.

  • Poly(arylene alkylene)s with Tetrazole Pendants for Alkaline Ion-Solvating Polymer Electrolyte
  • Ingår i: ChemSusChem. - 1864-564X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alkaline ion-solvating membranes derived from a tetrazole functionalized poly(arylene alkylene) are prepared, characterized and evaluated as electrode separators in alkaline water electrolysis. The base polymer, poly[[1,1′-biphenyl]-4,4′-diyl(1,1,1-trifluoropropan-2-yl)], is synthesized by superacid catalyzed polyhydroxyalkylation and subsequently functionalized with tetrazole pendants. After equilibration in aqueous KOH, the relatively acidic tetrazole pendants are deprotonated to form the corresponding potassium tetrazolides. The room temperature ion conductivity is found to peak at 19 mS cm−1 in 5 wt. % KOH, and slightly declines with increasing KOH concentration to 13 mS cm−1 in 30 wt. % KOH. Based on an overall assessment of the mechanical properties, conductivity and electrode activity, 30 wt. % KOH is applied for alkaline electrolysis cell tests. Current densities of up to 1000 mA cm−2 were reached with uncatalyzed Ni-foam electrodes at a cell voltage of less than 2.6 V, with improved gas barrier characteristics compared to that of the several times thicker Zirfon separator.
