  • Computer-Aided Planning of New Production Lines in Mechanical Industries and of Working Environments for Disabled Persons
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Production Research. ; , s. 85-86
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To optimize productivity and working-life quality, it is important to understand and utilise the connections between productivity and working environment. Culture and the state of the market may affect the strength of these connections. However, in order to ensure flexibility and quality in products and services, it may be useful to have motivated, skilled and responsible coworkers at all levels. For the same reasons, absenteeism and high turnover rates have to be avoided. In a time when new technology is rapidly disseminated throughout the world, the way in which human resources are managed may be of the outmost importance to success. A major obstacle to the gathering of experience and knowledge from all relevant parties – e g production engineers, managers, the workforce and external experts – in a planning process is the lack of a common, efficient language. Mistakes made when designing new working environments are often very costly to adjust once the plans are realized. The prize of a poorly-planned environment is high in economical terms, but also in terms of human suffering. This may be especially important for disabled persons. Some basic ideas behind the computer-aided planning methodology currently being developed at the Lund Institute of Technology, and at Lund University, are the following ones: -In a planning process, it is important to draw on the creativity, experience, knowledge and enthusiasm of as many persons as possible. It is particularly essential that the group which is going to manage and apply the planned system finds it acceptable, as this group’s willingness and competence to improve the solution during and after implementation is often crucial. -Time is a resource in short supply, and a planning group including persons with very dissimilar backgrounds in terms of experience and knowledge could be too time-consuming. -Pictures of planned systems may help a heterogeneous group to obtain a common language; they may also provide the members of the group with good mental models as a basis for an efficient dialogue. In this workshop paper we will briefly discuss the computer-aided planning tool and present some of our experiences of its application to the planning of new production lines in mechanical industries and of working environments for the disabled.

  • Computer Aided Planning of Production and Working Environment
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Human Factors in Organizational Design and Management -IV. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. ; , s. 499-504, s. 499-504
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Success of design projects depends on their quality from a technical and economic point of view and on the quality of their implementation and use. This paper discusses a computer aided planning (CAP) technique and its applicability and quality in both these respects. One version of the CAP-technique is developed for planning of industrial working environments and another version for planning of residential and working environments for physically handicapped.

  • Virtual Reality in Air Traffic Control
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEA 2000/HFES 2000 Congress. ; 6, s. 6-275
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Air traffic control is a highly spatial work. However, there are currently no three-dimensional tools used in the education of air traffic controllers or in the operational work of air traffic control. This paper presents results from some pilot studies aiming to: -Find new techniques for visualization and editing of trajectories in air traffic control. -Investigate how Virtual Reality (VR) can contribute to the air traffic controllers’ understanding of the air space and of certain situations. Two VR models have been developed. In one model a procedure called ‘holding’ is visualized. In the other VR model the different sectors in the air space are shown to make it easier for the air traffic controller to build a mental picture of a sector. In a training package the user can fly around in the sector and see how traffic passes through. These introductory studies indicate the usefulness of new ways to present the third dimension in a variety of air traffic situations. The tools can be used to visualize a three dimensional situation and help the air traffic controller to build a mental model The most obvious application area is in training and education of air traffic controllers but other applications such as an explanation and communication tool in the investigation after an incident are of interest.

  • Computer-Aided Planning of Production, Working and Residential Environments
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-8141 .- 1872-8219. ; 17:1, s. 59-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses a computer-aided planning methodology and its applicability for planning of industrial production and working environments as well as for planning of residential and working environments for the differently abled. The methodology has been developed and evaluated in six case studies in mechanical industries and in six case studies related to adaptations for the differently abled. The results from the case studies indicate that computer-supported modelling and visualisation may serve as a common and efficient language facilitating communication about multifaceted environmental planning issues. The methodology is a cost-effective way of demonstrating layout ideas and testing dynamic activities like manufacturing and transportation. Corporate groups comprising people involved in, or affected by, development work seem to be a fruitful approach for cooperation, one which enhances learning and creativity. Such groups may be a proper forum for the dissemination of information, exchange of opinions, utilisation of both expert and lay experiences, and for public testing of current reality or future plans in such a way that mutual understanding between different professional categories is increased, hence promoting internal commitment.

  • A Planning Tool Prototype for Environment Adaptations
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Rehabilitation Engineering. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1063-6528. ; 3:3, s. 283-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the area of adapting/constructing homes and workplaces for the physically disabled, a computer-based planning tool has been prototyped and evaluated. The prototypes so far have been based on Macintosh computers and commercially available 3-D modeling and multimedia programs. Six case-studies formed the basis for user-oriented prototyping and evaluation. The present prototype was found useful in supporting the planner (e.g., an occupational therapist) in designing and testing several alternatives at an early stage, and in making modifications throughout the planning process. During planning sessions, the prototype supports understanding and communication among the participants, and provides possibilities to interact with the models and make instant changes. Human models can be adapted to an individual's size and abilities/disabilities, and included in the design to evaluate accessibility, clearance, reach, etc. In order to overcome deficiencies in modeling efficiency and interaction tools, such as viewpoint and object control/assessment, further prototyping should concentrate on developing a 3-D model library and a 3-D manipulation/evaluation program. These two components may have to be unique for this field of application and have the potential to become commercial products.

  • Participative Environment Planning for the Physically Disabled Using Computer Aided Design
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Schriftenreihe, Österreichische Computer Gesellschaft. ; , s. 150-156
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When planning new environments, such as homes and workplaces, for the physically disabled it is important to encourage active participation from all those involved. In a research programme initiated at the Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden, a new planning method is being introduced which utilizes computer-aided design as a planning tool. This tool supports and activates the understanding and participation of all involved, as well as aiding the expert in detailed planning of the environment’s functionality. This paper describes the planning tool and the studies performed so far. Future development and applications are also discussed.

  • Computer-Aided Planning of Working and Living Environments for Disabled People
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Computer Applications in Ergonomics, Occupational Safety and Health. ; , s. 137-144
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A research program for the development of a method for computer-aided planning of homes and working environments for disabled people has recently started. The method is being tested at rehabilitation centres in realistic planning situations and has obtained positive response from both the disabled persons and the professionals such as occupational therapists. The requirements and features of the computer modelling techniques are discussed, and future improvements to the planning tool are suggested.
