  • Nuclear astrophysics with radioactive ions at FAIR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

  • Cosmic ray measurements with Pamela experiment
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PAMELA is a satellite borne experiment designed to study with great accuracy cosmic rays of galactic, solar, and trapped nature hi a wide energy range (protons: 80 MeV-700 GeV, electrons 50 MeV-400 GeV). Main objective is the study of the antimatter component: antiprotons (80 MeV-190 GeV), positrons (50 MeV-270 GeV) and search for antinuclei with a precision of the order of 10(-8)). The experiment, housed on board the Russian Resurs-DK1 satellite, was launched on June, 15(th) 2006 in a 350 X 600 km orbit with an inclination of 70 degrees. In this work we describe the scientific objectives awl the performance of PAMELA in its first two years of operation. Data oil protons of trapped, secondary and galactic nature - as well as measurements of the December 13(th) 2006 Solar Particle Event - are also provided.

  • Delay-induced Dynamical Phenomena in Impulsive Goodwin's Oscillator : What We Know So Far
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 2015 54Th Ieee Conference On Decision And Control (CDC). - 9781479978861 ; , s. 590-595
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Impulsive Goodwin's oscillator model is introduced to capture the dynamics of sustained periodic processes in endocrine systems controlled by episodic pulses of hormones. The model is hybrid and comprises a continuous subsystem describing the hormone concentrations operating under a discrete pulse-modulated feedback implemented by firing neurons. Time delays appear in mathematical models of endocrine systems due to the significant transport phenomena but also because of the time necessary to produce releasable hormone quantities. From a biological point of view, the neural control should be robust against the time delay to ensure the loop functionality over a wide range of inter-individual variability. The paper provides an overview of the currently available results and contributes a generalization of a Poincare mapping approach to study complex dynamics of impulsive Goodwin oscillator. Both pointwise and distributed time delays are considered in a general framework based on the Poincare mapping. Bifurcation analysis is utilized to illustrate the analytical results.

  • Buildings LCA and digitalization: Designers' toolbox based on a survey
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science. - : IOP Publishing. - 1755-1307 .- 1755-1315. ; 1078:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a context of digitalization and increasing quality requirements, the building sector is facing an increasing level of complexity regarding its design process. This results in a growing number of involved actors from different domains, a multitude of tasks to be completed and a higher degree of needed expertise. New buildings are also required to reach higher performances in terms of environmental quality. To that regard, the exploitation of the full potential of digital tools can facilitate the integration of environmental aspects in the planning process, limit productivity shortcomings and reduce environmental impacts, which can result from an unaware decision making. Building environmental assessment can be performed through several Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-based tools. “Pure calculation” tools quantify final buildings' environmental potential, while “complex tools” additionally support decision making during the planning process. It is often difficult to choose the best suitable tool, which strongly depends on the user's needs. Within the IEA EBC Annex 72, a survey was realized with the main objective of creating a comprehensive overview of the existing tools dedicated to buildings LCA. The questionnaire included the usability, functionality, compliance, data reliability and interoperability of the analysed tools. Lastly, based on the survey outcomes and their critical assessment, a procedure for the identification and selection of a tool has been proposed based on user's needs. As a result, this work outlines main features of currently available building LCA tools, for which there is a harmonized status in terms of usability and overall applied LCA methodology. Despite the need for more automatized workflows, tools' embedding is mostly not yet applicable in system chains or limited to a restricted number of tools.

  • Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 1668:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C at the R3B setup in a first campaign within FAIR Phase 0 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. The goal was to improve the accuracy of the experimental data for the 12C(a,?)16O fusion reaction and to reach lower center-ofmass energies than measured so far. The experiment required beam intensities of 109 16O ions per second at an energy of 500 MeV/nucleon. The rare case of Coulomb breakup into 12C and 4He posed another challenge: The magnetic rigidities of the particles are so close because of the same mass-To-charge-number ratio A/Z = 2 for 16O, 12C and 4He. Hence, radical changes of the R3B setup were necessary. All detectors had slits to allow the passage of the unreacted 16O ions, while 4He and 12C would hit the detectors' active areas depending on the scattering angle and their relative energies. We developed and built detectors based on organic scintillators to track and identify the reaction products with sufficient precision.

  • RadioAstron gravitational redshift experiment: Status update
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 14th Marcel Grossman Meeting On Recent Developments in Theoretical and Experimental General Relativity, Astrophysics and Relativistic Field Theories, Proceedings. - : WORLD SCIENTIFIC. - 9789813226593 ; , s. 3569-3575
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A test of a cornerstone of general relativity, the gravitational redshift effect, is currently being conducted with the RadioAstron spacecraft, which is on a highly eccentric orbit around Earth. Using ground radio telescopes to record the spacecraft signal, synchronized to its ultra-stable on-board H-maser, we can probe the varying flow of time on board with unprecedented accuracy. The observations performed so far, currently being analyzed, have already allowed us to measure the effect with a relative accuracy of 4 × 10−4. We expect to reach 2.5 × 10−5 with additional observations in 2016, an improvement of almost a magnitude over the 40-year old result of the GP-A mission.

  • Novel Method of Temperature Modulation for Enhancing Catalytic Gas Sensor Selectivity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium (SAS). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781728194318 - 9781728194318
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Catalytic gas sensors are among the most widespread gas sensors for combustible gas concentration measurements. However, their selectivity is low. In this research, the results of machine learning techniques application to enhance catalytic gas sensor selectivity are presented. The measurements of sensor signal are performed using the multistage heat pulse method described in our previous works. Contrary to the previous works, the number of heating stages was increased from 2 to 55, which corresponds to the heating voltage range of 125 m V to 1.5 V with a 25 m V step. This change enriches sensor signal with information about gas compositions. Methane and vapors of acetone, ethanol and gasoline are used as target gases. A support vector machine method is used to train two models. The first one was trained based on the plain normalized data. It was used for a microcontroller implementation of the method. The second model used the data transformed by principal component analysis technique. This model was used to visualize the method proposed. The results show that the application of proposed method allows to identify gases by single catalytic sensor. These principles can be used to design selective gas detectors which will react only to target gases.
