  • Are Religious People More Prosocial? A Quasi-Experimental Study with Madrasah Pupils in a Rural Community in India
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using quasi-experimental data, this paper examines the relationship between religiosity and prosocial behavior. In contrast to previous studies which identify religious people by how often they attend religious services or by their self-reported religiosity, this study compares the behavior of highly devout students who are preparing to enter the clergy, to the behavior of other students in a public-goods game and in the dictator game. The results show that religious students were significantly more cooperative in the public-goods game and significantly more generous in the dictator game than other students.

  • Asymmetric dynamics between uncertainty and unemployment flows in the United States
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper examines how different uncertainty measures affect the unemployment level, inflow, and outflow in the U.S. across all states of the business cycle. We employ linear and nonlinear causality-in-quantile tests to capture a complete picture of the effect of uncertainty on U.S. unemployment. To verify whether there are any common effects across different uncertainty measures, we use monthly data on four uncertainty measures and on U.S. unemployment from January 1997 to August 2018. Our results corroborate the general predictions from a search and matching framework of how uncertainty affects unemployment and its flows. Fluctuations in uncertainty generate increases (upper-quantile changes) in the unemployment level and in the inflow. Conversely, shocks to uncertainty have a negative impact on U.S. unemployment outflow. Therefore, the effect of uncertainty is asymmetric depending on the states (quantiles) of U.S. unemployment and on the adopted unemployment measure. Our findings suggest statecontingent policies to stabilize the unemployment level when large uncertainty shocks occur.

  • In the back of your mind: Subliminal influences of religious concepts on prosocial behavior
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Does religion enhance prosocial behavior? We investigate the ways in which implicit influences of religious concepts affect generosity and cooperation. In contrast to previous studies, we assess the direct impact of religion as an independent variable on prosocial behavior. We do so by subliminally priming participants with religious concepts in a scrambled sentence task before they play a dictator game and a prisoner?s dilemma game. We found that implicit priming of religious concepts significantly increased prosocial behavior in both games. This result was present among both religious and nonreligious participants. Selfreported measure of religiosity was related neither to generosity nor to cooperation.

  • Sexual Orientation and Earnings in Sweden
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a study of earnings differentials between homosexual individuals who are living in civil unions and married heterosexual individuals based on register data from Sweden. The results show that gay men are at an earnings disadvantage as compared to male heterosexuals. This earnings differential amounts to between 10 and 15 per cent. The earnings differential is smaller in metropolitan areas compared to nonmetropolitan areas. Regarding females, the results show that the earnings differential between lesbians and heterosexual women is very small. The existence of different kinds of discrimination as well as the fact that families specialize in market and household labour within households are put forward as plausible explanations for the results.

  • Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps : Designation as a Terrorist Organization
  • 2024
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), established in 1979 to safeguard Iran's theocratic regime, operates independently from the nation's regular military. It focuses on both domestic security and foreign missions, notably through its specialized Quds Force. Over the years, the IRGC has evolved into a formidable force engaged in global acts of terrorism and espionage. The downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 in January 2020, orchestrated by the IRGC, has been officially classified as an act of terrorism by the Superior Court of Ontario, Canada. This incident exemplifies the criteria set under the European Union's 'Common Position 931' (CP931) for designating entities as terrorist organizations. CP931 mandates EU member states to enforce specific measures against groups involved in terrorism, incorporating a dual-step verification process: an initial decision by a competent national authority regarding the entity's involvement in terrorism, followed by a confirmation from the European Council. This process underscores the requirement for decisions to be both recent and legally robust, and it accommodates considerations for entities based outside of EU states. The judicial ruling by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, asserting the IRGC's deliberate terrorist actions in the PS752 tragedy, aligns with the stipulations of CP931, positioning the IRGC as a viable candidate for inclusion on the EU's terrorist list.
