  • Biomarkers for dementia in Latin American countries: Gaps and opportunities
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Alzheimers & Dementia. - : Wiley. - 1552-5260 .- 1552-5279. ; 19:2, s. 721-735
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Limited knowledge on dementia biomarkers in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries remains a serious barrier. Here, we reported a survey to explore the ongoing work, needs, interests, potential barriers, and opportunities for future studies related to biomarkers. The results show that neuroimaging is the most used biomarker (73%), followed by genetic studies (40%), peripheral fluids biomarkers (31%), and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers (29%). Regarding barriers in LAC, lack of funding appears to undermine the implementation of biomarkers in clinical or research settings, followed by insufficient infrastructure and training. The survey revealed that despite the above barriers, the region holds a great potential to advance dementia biomarkers research. Considering the unique contributions that LAC could make to this growing field, we highlight the urgent need to expand biomarker research. These insights allowed us to propose an action plan that addresses the recommendations for a biomarker framework recently proposed by regional experts.

  • Progress Towards Adaptive Aircraft Engine Nacelles
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 29th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS. - : International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Emissions and noise of aircraft engineshave to be significantly further reduced andefficiency further increased in the future. Onemeans is the improvement of airflow though theengine and especially so in its inlet region byproper shapes. Due to changes in the flightconditions, the optimal nacelle shape varies. Itwould thus be beneficial to be able to change thenacelle shape. Evaluations on system and enginelevels including related flow simulations supportthe identification of proper shaping parameters.Initial concepts of possible morphingtechnologies are discussed as well.

  • Antenatal care services in rural Uganda: missed opportunities for good-quality care
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Qualitative health research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 22:5, s. 619-629
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experience from countries that have achieved low maternal mortality suggests that access to good-quality maternity services is critical to improve maternal health. In this article we appraise the quality of antenatal care (ANC) services in a rural district of Uganda. We used a mixed methods approach, relying on a combination of semistructured interviews with both clients and providers, structured observations of provider–patient interactions, and infrastructure assessment of selected health facilities. We found several bottlenecks in health service delivery, including ineffective organization of educational sessions; selective omission of certain services; lack of explanation of important clinical and laboratory procedures; failure to link the performed procedures with preventive information; and occasional lack of respect for clients. The policy implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the need to (a) ensure an adequate supply of medical equipment and drugs, (b) enhance health workers’ compliance with ANC guidelines, and (c) combine medical procedures with educational messages.

  • 3D to 2D reorganization of silver-thiol nanostructures, triggered by solvent vapor annealing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3372 .- 2040-3364. ; 10:48, s. 23018-23026
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metal-organic composites are of great interest for a wide range of applications. The control of their structure remains a challenge, one of the problems being a complex interplay of covalent and supramolecular interactions. This paper describes the self-assembly, thermal stability and phase transitions of ordered structures of silver atoms and thiol molecules spanning from the molecular to the mesoscopic scale. Building blocks of molecularly defined clusters formed from 44 silver atoms, each particle coated by a monolayer of 30 thiol ligands, are used as ideal building blocks. By changing solvent and temperature it is possible to tune the self-assembled 3D crystals of pristine nanoparticles or, conversely, 2D layered structures, with alternated stacks of Ag atoms and thiol monolayers. The study investigates morphological, chemical and structural stability of these materials between 25 and 300 °C in situ and ex situ at the nanoscale by combining optical and electronic spectroscopic and scattering techniques, scanning probe microscopies and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The proposed wet-chemistry approach is relatively cheap, easy to implement, and scalable, allowing the fabricated materials with tuned properties using the same building blocks.
