  • Self-evaluation using iPads in EFL teaching practice
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: CALL communities and culture. - : Research-publishing.net. - 9781908416438 - 9781908416445 - 9781908416452 ; , s. 20-24
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relentlessly accelerating global educational demands for teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) in multiple, diverse, and often remote geographic locations constitute new challenges for academic institutions, teacher training and preparation programs, and teachers themselves. This study describes a novel approach where five elementary school preservice teachers teaching ESL/EFL borrowed an iPad mini from their teacher training institution customized with specific apps to record a series of five teaching sequences during their teaching practice placement in elementary schools in Tanzania and Kenya. All recorded sessions were uploaded to a Moodle Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)site specially constructed for the purpose of the teaching practice course. Results indicate that, apart from their experienced instructors’ feedback on their teaching practice, the recorded sessions formed constructive tools for self-reflection, self-evaluation and the pursuit of possible paths for improvement.

  • The role of educational technologists in the provision of language courses in higher education : a case study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: CALL and complexity. - : Research-publishing.net. - 9782490057542 - 9782490057535 - 9782490057559 ; , s. 7-12
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, schools, municipalities, and universities have madeincreasing use of educational technologists (edtechs) to support teaching staff inthe delivery of technology-based courses in face-to-face, blended, or purely onlineformats. This paper is a case study focusing on the types of training and supportprovision provided by three edtechs within the arts and humanities faculty of a largeprovincial university in southern Sweden. The edtechs also identify a number ofobstacles in the way of developing Information and Communication Technology(ICT) and computer assisted language learning expertise among teaching staff.

  • The origins space telescope
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 11115
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Origins Space Telescope will trace the history of our origins from the time dust and heavy elements permanently altered the cosmic landscape to present-day life. How did galaxies evolve from the earliest galactic systems to those found in the universe today? How do habitable planets form? How common are life-bearing worlds? To answer these alluring questions, Origins will operate at mid-and far-infrared wavelengths and offer powerful spectroscopic instruments and sensitivity three orders of magnitude better than that of Herschel, the largest telescope flown in space to date. After a 3 1/2 year study, the Origins Science and Technology Definition Team will recommend to the Decadal Survey a concept for Origins with a 5.9-m diameter telescope cryocooled to 4.5 K and equipped with three scientific instruments. A mid-infrared instrument (MISC-T) will measure the spectra of transiting exoplanets in the 2.8-20 μm wavelength range and offer unprecedented sensitivity, enabling definitive biosignature detections. The Far-IR Imager Polarimeter (FIP) will be able to survey thousands of square degrees with broadband imaging at 50 and 250 μm. The Origins Survey Spectrometer (OSS) will cover wavelengths from 25-588 μm, make wide-area and deep spectroscopic surveys with spectral resolving power R ∼ 300, and pointed observations at R ∼ 40,000 and 300,000 with selectable instrument modes. Origins was designed to minimize complexity. The telescope has a Spitzer-like architecture and requires very few deployments after launch. The cryo-thermal system design leverages JWST technology and experience. A combination of current-state-of-the-art cryocoolers and next-generation detector technology will enable Origins' natural backgroundlimited sensitivity.

  • The Origins Space Telescope: Mission concept overview
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. ; 10698
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only. The Origins Space Telescope (OST) will trace the history of our origins from the time dust and heavy elements permanently altered the cosmic landscape to present-day life. How did the universe evolve in response to its changing ingredients? How common are life-bearing planets? To accomplish its scientific objectives, OST will operate at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths and offer superlative sensitivity and new spectroscopic capabilities. The OST study team will present a scientifically compelling, executable mission concept to the 2020 Decadal Survey in Astrophysics. To understand the concept solution space, our team studied two alternative mission concepts. We report on the study approach and describe both of these concepts, give the rationale for major design decisions, and briefly describe the mission-enabling technology.

  • Developing a framework for studying brain networks in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Medical Image Understanding and Analysis - 22nd Conference, Proceedings. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1865-0929. - 9783319959207 ; 894, s. 203-216
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) are at high risk of brain injury, with subsequent developmental problems including severe neuromotor, cognitive and behavioral impairment. Neural correlates of cognitive and behavioral impairment in neonatal HIE, in particular in infants who survive without severe neuromotor impairment, are poorly understood. It is reasonable to hypothesize that in HIE both structural and functional brain networks are altered, and that this might be the neural correlate of impaired cognitive and/or behavioral impairment in HIE. Here, an analysis pipeline to study the structural and functional brain networks from neonatal MRI in newborns with HIE is presented. The structural connectivity is generated from dense whole-brain tractograms derived from diffusion-weighted MR fibre tractography. This investigation of functional connectivity focuses on the emerging resting state networks (RSNs), which are sensitive to injuries from hypoxic-ischemic insults to the newborn brain. In conjunction with the structural connectivity, alterations to the structuro-functional connectivity of the RSNs can be studied. Preliminary results from a proof-of-concept study in a small cohort of newborns with HIE are promising. The obstacles encountered and improvements to the pipeline are discussed. The framework can be further extended for joint analysis with EEG functional-connectivity.

  • International multi-institutional bench mark study on dosimetric and volumetric modulation using helical tomotherapy treatment planning for malignant pleural mesothelioma tumors
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, 2015. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319193861 - 9783319193878 ; 51, s. 381-383
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Determining the most desirable and achievable target dose and organ at risk (OAR) sparing using helical TomoTherapy planning system for mesothelioma treatment plans. A range of planning parameters was used. The reviewers’ ranking assessment (Ranking in Groups: 1 = Good, 2 = Above Average, 3 = Average, 4 = Poor). The overall rankings revealed that a plan with a balanced tradeoff among all planning objectives was preferred by most participants and reviewers. Other studies found low doses to the contralateral lung to be limiting. This was not the case in our study, with TomoTherapy we found the dose to contra lateral lung to be as low as V5Gy=0.87%. A pitch value of 0.287 or 0.43 would provide better result. A delivered modulation factor of above 1.7 and a treatment time around 500 sec will be beneficial consideration in planning.
