- This chapter is intended to offer assistance for the linguistic description of writing systems throughout the history of one or, especially, several languages and provide a comparative description of the different units of writing systems. The first section establishes the definitions of the concepts of grapheme, graph, allograph and suprasegmental grapheme. The application of these concepts to English and Romance languages is exemplified by three models and methods of diachronic and comparative description of writing systems: Romance scriptology, cultural history of European orthographies, and comparative graphematics of punctuation. The second section discusses biscriptality, the phenomenon of employing two or more writing systems for the same language, not rare in the history of languages from different families, and related to different aspects of society and language users. With examples mainly from Russian and other Slavic languages, biscriptality is shown to be present on several levels of written language, and various applications of biscriptality are characterized with the help of dichotomies such as synchronic vs. diachronic biscriptality, monocentric vs. pluricentric biscriptality, and societal vs. individual biscriptality.

- The article aims to describe some of the new approaches within Early Slavic studies that have become available due to the recent appearance of on-line library catalogs, public repositories, social media networks, and digital surrogates of medieval Slavic manuscripts and early printed books. The changing opportunities and challenges within this new digital context are demonstrated through short presentations of a few projects within Swedish Early Slavic studies, including the Novgorodiana Stockholmiensia project and the project Digitalised Descriptions of Slavic Cyrillic Manuscripts and Early Printed Books in Swedish Libraries and Archives.

- In chapter 2 of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Alice tries to talk to a Mouse, but does not receive an answer: "'Perhaps it doesn't understand English,' thought Alice. 'I dare say it's a French mouse, come over with William the Conqueror.'". Accordingly, Alice addresses the Mouse in French: "Où est ma chatte?". Russian translators of Alice have translated this sequence in different ways – for example, in Vladimir Nabokov's translation (1923), which is often considered a typical example of a domesticated translation, the Mouse does not understand Russian. The mouse is probably French and the reason that it is in the same place as Anya (Alice) might be that it has stayed behind (in Russia?) after the retreat of Napoleon (in the 1812 war between France and Russia), and Alice speaks to the Mouse in French: "Ou est ma chatte?". On the basis of an analysis of examples of Russian and other translations, the present contribution will try to problematize the concepts domestication and foreignization, applying them not only to the translation of "domestic" source text elements, but also to source text elements that can be seen as "foreign".

- The article presents 29 printed Church Slavonic Psalters from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries currently preserved at Uppsala University Library and other Swedish repositories. Approximately half of the books were printed in Moscow, whereas the remaining books were printed in Kiev, Lviv, Vilna and other important printing centres during this period. The Swedish collections of early printed Church Slavonic Psalters are not impressive when it comes to numbers, but they offer insight in the early spread of Cyrillic printed books outside their countries of origin as well as in an important period in the history of book collecting in northern Europe.

- This chapter engages with the typological model of biscriptality recently developed by Bunčić et al. in order to offer an innovative approach to the analysis of graphematic features in Church Slavonic orthography. In the chapter, the biscriptality model is applied to two South Slavic New Testament texts printed in Glagolitic and Cyrillic letters in 1562/63 and 1563, respectively, in Urach near Tübingen. Through a detailed analysis of some important features of the printed texts of the New Testament, concepts such as letters, graphemes and allographs are used to characterise both the internal script contexts within the two texts and their external biscriptal relations. The chapter outlines a model for biscriptal isomorphism that is applied to six grapheme classes: the segmental graphemes letters and numerals, and the supragraphemes capitalisation, superposition, abbreviation and ligature.

- The present article discusses toponyms in different languages referring to the same geographical location, making a distinction between similarity in sound (phonetic adaptation, name quotation, etc.) and similarity in sense (name translation, etc.). In the latter case, following Coates (2005), a distinction is made between semantic reference, onymic reference, and apparent etymological sense. The short theoretical introduction is illustrated with examples from bilingual or multilingual areas such as Southern Austria (Kärnten—with German and Slovenian place-names) and, particularly, Hong Kong, which exhibits an intricate interplay between two varieties of Chinese—Cantonese and Mandarin—and English, where, due to the funda- mental differences between the Chinese and English writing systems, particular attention is paid to the different Romanization methods for Chinese.
