  • PESI - a taxonomic backbone for Europe
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Biodiversity Data Journal. - 1314-2836 .- 1314-2828. ; 3, s. 1-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable taxonomy underpins communication in all of biology, not least nature conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem resources. The flexibility of taxonomic interpretations, however, presents a serious challenge for end-users of taxonomic concepts. Users need standardised and continuously harmonised taxonomic reference systems, as well as high-quality and complete taxonomic data sets, but these are generally lacking for non-specialists. The solution is in dynamic, expertly curated web-based taxonomic tools. The Pan-European Species-directories Infrastructure (PESI) worked to solve this key issue by providing a taxonomic e-infrastructure for Europe. It strengthened the relevant social (expertise) and information (standards, data and technical) capacities of five major community networks on taxonomic indexing in Europe, which is essential for proper biodiversity assessment and monitoring activities. The key objectives of PESI were: 1) standardisation in taxonomic reference systems, 2) enhancement of the quality and completeness of taxonomic data sets and 3) creation of integrated access to taxonomic information. This paper describes the results of PESI and its future prospects, including the involvement in major European biodiversity informatics initiatives and programs.

  • Att urskilja selektiva traditioner i miljöundervisningens socialisationsinnehåll - implikationer för undervisning för hållbar utveckling
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Discerning selective traditions in the socialization content of environmental education – implications for education for sustainable developmentThis thesis offers an empirical contribution to research on content issues in environmental education. One way of approaching content issues is to study the socialization content. Socialization content forms an educational context in which subject matter content can develop into meaning. Through their different actions teachers communicate companion meanings to students, which together constitute the socialization content. These are messages about the subject and about education, such as the importance of students’ participation. One important starting point for this thesis is that the learning of subject matter and socialization content is simultaneous. Learning is often regarded as an inner individual process, while socialization is more often understood as an external fostering. By using the concept of meaning making, learning and socialization can be regarded as both simultaneous and mutual. The thesis has two main purposes, namely, methodological development and a more substantial study of socialization content. An interview method and analytical tool for researchers has been developed as a result of conducting a literature review and interviewing upper secondary school teachers involved in a general science course. This tool can be used to study the qualitative aspects of socialization content by examining shifts in five important educational aspects, and has been applied to the empirical data collected from teacher and student interviews. The analytical tool can also be transformed into a reflection tool for teachers to render their educational habits more visible. Teachers’ collective habits can develop into selective traditions in environmental education. Socialization content can be regarded as an important value-laden content that needs to be critically examined in an open democratic school system. These discussions could facilitate the development of a more pluralistic environmental education, which in turn could be further developed into an education for sustainable development.

  • Fröheteromorfismen hos havsnarv och saltnarv : Spergularia media and Spergularia marina and their heteromorphic seed revisited
  • 1991
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The flexibility of adaptation in plants to variable environmental conditions is greatly increased by the production of two or more different kinds of seeds. Such heteromorphic seeds, either with or without a winged margin, are characteristic of several species belonging to the genus Spergularia (Caryophyllaceae). By examining the seed type variation and the extent of seed heteromorphism in S. media, and by investigating the differential demographic and dispersal characteristics of the different seed morphs, an explanation was sought to the phenomenon itself, as well as to the distribution of this species in its natural habitat: salt marshes. A nine-year field study of the demography of this short-lived perennial herb revealed that, in addition to density dependent mortality of the seedlings, unpredictable climatical fluctuations profoundly affected the survival and the growth of the plants. The production of winged and unwinged seeds was differentiated along a gradient of increasing vegetation density, with the winged seeds most frequently occurring where the vegetation is dense. The winged seeds which have a slightly larger seed body germinated more readily, the survivorship of their resulting plants was higher, the growth was quicker and the reproduction was more profuse than among the unwinged ones. In the closely resemblant S. marina the experimentally determined dispersal distance was almost the same in the two seed types when dispersed by wind, but when dispersed by water in the presence of vegetation, the winged seeds were more easily trapped at a short distance. In want of detailed knowledge of the phylogenetic interrelations in the genus needed to settle the question of whether the seed heteromorphism represents independent evolutionary events, or if the presumed adaptation has a common origin, by referring to the connection between the occurrence of seed wings and increasing seed size at both intrageneric and intraspecific levels, and the restriction of the seed heteromorphism to species living under conditions where secondary dispersal by water is important, I conclude that the heteromorphic condition is adaptive in relation to seed dispersal.

  • UNEP/UNECE GEO-6 Assessment for the pan-European region.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: UNEP/UNECEGEO-6 Assessment for the pan-European region. - Nairobi : UNEP/UNECE. - 9789280735451
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6) Assessment for the pan-European region paints a comprehensive picture of the environmental factors contributing to human health and well-being at the regional level. Backed by a large body of recent, credible scientific evidence, regional-wide consultations and a robust intergovernmental process, the assessment demonstrates that regional and global multilateral environmental agreements have improved environmental conditions in the pan-European region. It also highlights the complexity of the interlinked environmental, social and economic challenges now confronting decision makers.
