  • Equivalence et saillance dans l'expression de la localisation frontale dynamique en suédois et en français : Etude comparative et contrastive de fram et de (s’)avancer/en avant
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study deals with the expression of frontal orientation in dynamic contexts as lexicalised in the Swedish particle fram and its French equivalents (s')avancer/en avant. The study is based on a parallel corpus containing approximately one millon words of Swedish and one million words of French fiction and it consists of a comparison made on the basis of monolingual and crosslinguistic data. The study links with current trends in both cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics. The aim of the study is twofold : first it sets out to measure to what extent these forms express the same type of orientations and to what extent they do use these in domains other than the spatial one; second it sets out to measure to what extent these forms are used as translational equivalents as well as to list the other types of translational equivalents that occur in the corpus. This is done in order to evaluate the salience of the concept of frontal orientation in the both languages compared and to get a view of other types of conceptualizations that underlie the linguistic expression of the other language when the Swedish and the French texts do not make the same use of the expression of frontal orientation.

  • Informationsdesign i tillståndsövervakning : En studie av ett bildskärmsbaserat användargränssnitt för tillståndsövervakning och tillståndsbaserat underhåll
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This research concerns the information design and visual design of graphical user interfaces (GUI) in the condition monitoring and condition-based maintenance (CBM) of production equipment. It also concerns various communicative aspects of a GUI, which is used to monitor the condition of assets. It applies to one Swedish vendor and its intentions to design information. In addition, it applies to the interaction between the GUI and its individual visual elements, as well as the communication between the GUI and the users (in four Swedish paper mills). The research is performed as a single case study. Interviews and observations have been the main methods for data collection. Empirical data is analyzed with methods inferred to semiotics, rhetoric and narratology. Theories in information science and regarding remediation are used to interpret the user interface design. The key conclusion is that there are no less than five different forms of information, all important when determining the conditions of assets. These information forms include the words, images and shapes in the GUI, the machine components and peripherals equipment, the information that takes form when personnel communicate machine conditions, the personnel’s subjective associations, and the information forms that relate to the personnel's actions and interactions.Preventive technicians interpret the GUI-information individually and collectively in relation to these information forms, which influence their interpretation and understanding of the GUI information. Social media in the GUI makes it possible to represent essential information that takes form when employees communicate a machine’s condition. Photographs may represent information forms as a machine’s components, peripherals, and local environment change over time. Moreover, preventative technicians may use diagrams and photographs in the GUI to change attitudes among the personnel at the mills and convince them, for example, of a machine’s condition or the effectiveness of CBM as maintenance policy.

  • Managing Software Quality through Empirical Analysis of Fault Detection
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Software often constitutes a large share of today's products. To deliver a product with the level of software quality expected by the customer, software development organizations need to manage quality achievement and assessment. In practice, quality is often referred to as the lack of bugs. The research in this thesis is focused on how to improve software quality through effective and efficient detection of those software faults, and how to assess the level of software quality through analysis of the software faults. The research also further evaluates previous work, for example by replications, to continue building empirical knowledge in the field of software engineering. In a literature survey of empirical studies on inspections and testing, it is shown that the choice of detection method depends on several factors. Examples of factors that affect effectiveness and efficiency of fault detection include the type of fault and the type of artifact in which the faults occur. An experiment is conducted to compare the performance of inspections and testing on faults originating from the design. The fault detection effectiveness is also examined in a software process simulation study, validated with empirical data, to illustrate the impact of different factors in the process. A large case study was launched iteratively in an industrial context, investigating three development projects where the product quality is measured by analysis of the detected software faults. The analysis is guided with the purpose of generalizing findings obtained from other research studies. Fault distributions are examined, in terms of detection phase, location of faults, and fault density. In addition, a selection method for software reliability growth models is evaluated by application to fault data. The contribution of this thesis straddles both research and practice. The conclusions of the thesis with its replicative approach are that to generalize any finding it is necessary to explore the applicability of the techniques investigated by gradually changing their parameters in additional studies.

  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Aim: The overall aim was to map and describe experiences of heat conservationmeasures (HCM) for the patient in connection with surgery from the patientʼsand the surgical teamʼs perspectives. The four studies aimed to: determinewhether nurse anesthetists have access to, knowledge of, and adhere torecommended guidelines to maintain normal body temperature during theperioperative period (I), describe the patientʼs lived experience of warmth andcoldness in connection with surgery (II), describe the nurse anesthetistʼsperceptions of heat conservation measures in connection with surgery (III),describe the surgical team memberʼs experience of communication regardingheat conservation measures during surgery (IV).Methods: The four studies had both descriptive and explorative designs.Participants included the head of department and nurse anesthetists atoperating departments in Sweden (I), 16 patients (II), 19 nurse anesthetists(III), and 29 surgical team members (IV). Data were collected via twoquestionnaires (I), individual interviews (II, III, IV), and narratives (IV). Datawere analyzed by descriptive statistics and content analysis (I), reflectivelifeworld research (II), phenomenography (III), and deductive content analysis(IV).Results: There are two sides to the same coin when it comes to HCM. One sideis temperature comfort and the other side is body temperature and temperaturemeasurement. Patients expect that their individual needs for temperaturecomfort will be fulfilled and when it is, they felt calmness and well-being. Thereis, however, an interdependence between the patient, the surgical team, andteam members. Patients do not dare to speak up about their needs and adapt tothe HCM they have been provided. The nurse anesthetist is dependent on thedialogue with the patient to be able to provide the right HCM and also on teammembersʼ communication and attitude towards HCM. The surgical team is inturn dependent on each other’s competencies when communicating aboutHCM which often happens in several small team constellations and sparinglyin the whole surgical team. Overall, there is a lack of a common guidelines, knowledge of HCM and especially redistribution, and full access to HCM.Conclusion: It is of importance to reach the patientʼs individual needs to avoidsuffering and promote well-being and patient safety. The nurse anesthetistʼsgoal is to protect the patient by avoiding heat loss and maintaining normal bodytemperature. There is a need to highlight the patient’s role in the surgical team, whose goal is to provide the patient with the best care, there might however, bedifferent perspectives on HCM. Furthermore, the surgical team needs supportfrom their organizational management regarding the right preconditions asaccess to HCM and a common platform for education to provide HCM, toincrease patient safety during surgery.

  • Nationalism i fredens tjänst : Svenska skolornas fredsförening, fredsfostran och historieundervisning 1919-1939
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aim of this thesis is to contribute to the field of research that examines the relationship between peace efforts and nationalism. The relationship will be studied from perspectives of educa- tional history and history didactics. More precisely, by focusing on history education, this disserta- tion will analyse the demands for a comprehensive peace education in schools that were put forward by a long list of actors in the Western world during the interwar period, and as such discuss to what extent, and in what ways, nationalism influenced the content and design of this peace education. The main theoretical framework of this thesis is the concept of nationalism, and the position of nationalism as a hegemonic ideology during the first half of the 20th century. Another central un- derstanding is the assumption that the educational system, specifically history education, played a central role in creating, maintaining and strengthening collective identities as well as the prevailing ideological hegemony. The empirical investigation has been limited to studying the demands and ideas presented by Nordic peace educators, mainly The Swedish School Peace League (SSF), regar- ding peace-educating history teaching. As such, the empirical aim has been to investigate the SSF’s views on the relationship between nationalism and peace education, i.e., how internationalism and pacifism were to be taught, as well as how this understanding affected the League’s ideas regarding history teaching. The results have also been analysed from a gender perspective, based on the as- sumption that contemporary notions of gender in relation to nationalism, war and peace in different ways had an impact upon the content and format of the proposed peace education.         The study shows that the SSF regarded nationalism as the very foundation and prerequisite for any peace education. SSF thus tried to reconcile nationalism, internationalism and pacifism under one and the same ideological approach; “patriotic pacifism”, which in turn strongly influenced the endorsed peace-educating history teaching. Furthermore, the study highlights boys’ central role in the peace education project, which essentially set the long-term goal of creating a new pacifist and internationally oriented male ideal and yet, despite these aims, continued an intimate association with the “national”. Key concepts in SSF’s peace education were unite and supplement, and thereby they redefined central meanings of hegemonic nationalism. SSF’s patriotic pacifism and its impact on the association's demands for a peace-educating history teaching can best be described as an “intra-hegemonic counterforce”.

  • Encountering the meeting place : The production of public space in contemporary Swedish planning
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A common theme in contemporary Swedish planning discussions is that we no longer meet each other in public spaces. This perceived lack of interpersonal meetings and encounters is said to reinforce the use ofstereotypes and create further distance between differences in the city. The fundamental idea behind this argument is the perception of public space as threatening and insecure, which works as a barrier to the necessary meetings. Consequently, public spaces are rapidly being reconceptualized, redeveloped and repurposed into meeting places. In this conceptualization, the meeting place is intended to generate new social relations that transcend social boundaries and perceptions of belonging, support economic development, and revitalize representative democracy. This thesis explores the production of public space as meeting place with the aim of critically discussing and nuancing the practices and ideasthat are currently leading this process. Mobilizing the production of space as its theoretical framework and using empirical material collected through interviews, observations, and planning documents from three mid-sized cities in Sweden, this research seeks to understand how the meeting place is conceptualized and how it can be understood within Swedish municipal planning. The thesis discusses the discrepancies between vision and practice, abstract and concrete space, by focusing on representations of the meeting place and the practices employed to materialize them. The researchshows that the meeting place in Swedish planning is to be understood as a dominant representation of space, which is represented through the articulation of a specific public while it is building on a consensusoriented production of meaning in a specific material context. This, I argue, contributes to reconceptualizing social problems into questions of form that can be resolved by planning rather than by politics.

  • Using health-related quality of life instruments for children with long-term conditions : On the basis of a national quality registry system
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: There has been a continuous development of new technologies in healthcare that are derived from national quality registries. However, this innovation needs to be translated into the workflow of healthcare delivery, to enable children with long-term conditions to get the best support possible to manage their health during everyday life. Since children living with long-term conditions experience different interference levels in their lives, healthcare professionals need to assess the impact of care on children’s day-to-day lives, as a complement to biomedical assessments.Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to explore and describe the use of instruments about health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in outpatient care for children with long-term conditions on the basis of a national quality registry system. Methods: The research was conducted by using comparative, cross-sectional and explorative designs and data collection was performed by using different methods. The questionnaire DISABKIDS Chronic Generic Measure -37 was used as well as semi-structured interviews and video-recordings from consultations. Altogether, 156 children (8–18 years) and nine healthcare professionals participated in the studies. Children with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) (n 131) answered the questionnaire DISABKIDS and children with rheumatic diseases, kidney diseases and T1D (n 25) were interviewed after their consultation at the outpatient clinic after the web-DISABKIDS had been used. In total, nine healthcare professionals used the HRQOL instrument as an assessment tool during the encounters which was video-recorded (n 21). Quantitative deductive content analysis was used to describe content in different HRQOL instruments. Statistical inference was used to analyse results from DISABKIDS and qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the interviews and video-recordings.Results: The findings showed that based on a biopsychosocial perspective, both generic and disease-specific instruments should be used to gain a comprehensive evaluation of the child’s HRQOL. The DISABKIDS instrument is applicable when describing different aspects of health concerning children with T1D. When DISABKIDS was used in the encounters, children expressed positive experiences about sharing their results with the healthcare professional. It was discovered that different approaches led to different outcomes for the child when the healthcare professionals were using DISABKIDS during the encounter. When an instructing approach is used, the child’s ability to learn more about their health and how to improve their health is limited. When an inviting or engaging approach is used by the professional, the child may become more involved during the conversations. Conclusions: It could be argued that instruments of HRQOL could be used as a complement to biomedical variables, to promote a biopsychosocial perspective on the child’s health. According to the children in this thesis, feedback on their results after answering to web-DISABKIDS is important, which implies that healthcare professionals need to prioritize time for discussions about results from HRQOL instruments in the encounters. If healthcare professionals involve the child in the discussion of the results of the HRQOL, misinterpreted answers could be corrected during the conversation. Concurrently, this claims that healthcare professionals invite and engage the child.

  • Beyond Bright City Lights : The Migration Patterns of Gay Men and Lesbians
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of the most persistent popular notions of gay men and lesbians is that they either live in or move to larger cities. In this thesis, the geography and migration paths of gay men and lesbians are studied using the life course perspective to challenge this idea. It is argued that gay men and lesbians are affected by the time and place into which they are born. Like heterosexuals, they are subject to the normative conceptions of life paths that are present at a specific historical period and place. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, four studies related to this aim are conducted. The first study shows that the tendency for gay men and lesbians to be concentrated to the largest cities in Sweden is greater than for heterosexuals. However, it also shows that the concentration tendency of lesbians and couples is less strong. The second study illustrates that tolerance plays no role in the geographical concentration of gay men and lesbians. Although perceived tolerance is often assumed to matter, this study shows that measured intolerance does not have an effect on the concentration tendency. The third study explores the migration motives of gay men and lesbians living in the city of Malmö, Sweden. It shows that the life stories of older cohorts resembled typical rural-urban flight stories but that the youngest cohort stressed motives similar to the overall population. This is in sharp contrast to the fourth study, which scrutinises migration stories from Izmir, Turkey. Because legal recognition is lacking, following the same life path as heterosexuals is problematic for gay men and lesbians. Because moving out is connected to this path, they remained living at home longer or never moved. Accordingly, the family played a core role in their lives rather than the rural-urban binary.Taken together, these four studies show that the geography and migration patterns of gay men and lesbians are more multifaceted than living in or moving to a larger city.
