  • Nurses competencies in Home health care : An interview study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: BMC Nursing. - : Springer. - 1472-6955. ; 16:65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Nurses working in Home health care (HHC) are facing major challenges when more advanced care and treatment are performing in the patient’s home. The aim of this study was to explore how nurses experiencing their competencies in HHC. Methods: This study has a qualitative and explorative design. Ten nurses were interviewed and data were analysed by content analysis. Results: The themes “Being a capable nurse”, “Being a useful nurse” and “Being a subordinate and dependent nurse” were identified. Nurses want to be capable to take care of patients, develop their competencies and perform their duties in the way that are requested. They also want to be useful in their work and providing good and safe HHC. Finally, nurses want to improve the care in HHC with their competencies. Simultaneously, they are subordinate and dependent in the relation with their manager and manager’s interest to encourage nurses’ competence development. Conclusions: Nurses in HHC are responsible for many seriously ill patients and they want to contribute to a good and safe patient care. To maintain patient safety, reduce the risk for burnout and staff turnover as well as to contribute to a sustainable development of the work, strategies for transfer competencies between nurses and efforts for competence development are needed.

  • A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Trajectories of Mental Health Problems in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities. - : Springer. - 1056-263X .- 1573-3580. ; 36, s. 203-242
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To review the longitudinal trajectories - and the factors influencing their development - of mental health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Systematic review methods were employed. Searches of six databases used keywords and MeSH terms related to children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, mental health problems, and longitudinal research. After the removal of duplicates, reviewers independently screened records for inclusion, extracted data (outcomes and influencing factors), and evaluated the risk of bias. Findings were tabulated and synthesized using graphs and a narrative. Searches identified 94,662 unique records, from which 49 publications were included. The median publication year was 2015. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were the most commonly included population in retrieved studies. In almost 50% of studies, trajectories of mental health problems changed by < 10% between the first and last time point. Despite multiple studies reporting longitudinal trajectories of mental health problems, greater conceptual clarity and consideration of the measures included in research is needed, along with the inclusion of a more diverse range of populations of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

  • Skogsträdgårdsvistelser ur barns perspektiv – Speglat under samtalspromenader
  • 2022
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The licentiate thesis examines what spending time in a forest garden can offer children when this environment is used for teaching aimed at sustainability. What do the children remember from their visits to the forest garden? What do they find special or memorable? What can the children learn there? To answer such questions, walk-and-talk conversations were conducted with children who for a three-year period had regularly visited a forest garden during school hours. The overall purpose of the licentiate thesis is to deepen knowledge about what spending time in a forest garden in a school context can offer children, reflected from the children's perspectives. Furthermore, the thesis aims to deepen knowledge about walk-and-talk conversations as a data collection method when children are respondents. This leads to the research questions:1. In what ways can walk-and-talk conversations as a data collection method reflect children's perspectives in an environment and in relation to places? What are the possibilities and limitations of the method?2. What significance do forest garden visits in a pedagogical context aimed at learning for sustainability have from the children's perspective? The theoretical starting points of the licentiate thesis draw on social studies of childhood, ecological literacy and affordances. Another concept that emerged in the analysis process was plant blindness. Data consisted of audio-recorded walk-and-talk conversations, children's photographs and recorded informal, supplementary interviews. A total of 28 children (11 boys and 17 girls) participated in sub-studies II and III. The children were aged 7-9 years, but most were 9 years old.The licentiate thesis consists of three sub-studies:Sub-study I is a literature review that focuses on opportunities, limitations, and challenges in using walk-and-talk conversations as a data collection method with children and young people. Walk-and-talk conversations can increase opportunities to capture children's perspectives and help to reduce power imbalances between children and researchers. However, analysing data from child-led walks and conversations can be challenging, while awareness of the researcher's own position and assumptions becomes particularly important.Sub-study II deals with the forest garden from children’s perspective. The first category, ‘to appreciate the place the forest garden’, contained the following themes: physical work, relationships with animals and plants, aesthetic and edible aspects and food, and friends. Most of the children enjoyed staying in the forest garden with its natural features. They valued the care of living organisms and felt that spending time in the forest garden was fun and exciting. In the second category, ‘aspects of learning in the forest garden’, the following themes emerged; practical skills, coexistence and caring, and biological knowledge and ecological understanding.Sub-study III deals with the four most photographed phenomena in the forest garden. The first were the plants, including trees and shrubs, which provided sensual, aesthetic and emotional affordances. The second was the pond, which provided physical affordances and wishes, while the third, the barbecue area, provided social affordances. Finally, the tipi provided affordances for privacy and imagination. To conclude: children's forest garden visits, with learning and nature encounters, can contribute to sustainable development. The investigated forest garden was an outdoor environment designed for children with natural features and with a focus on organic farming, where the forest garden educators helped to create a framework for both learning and relational opportunities. Developing ecological literacy in the new generation is a crucial concern, and the results of the licentiate thesis suggest that establishing educational outdoor environments where children receive parts of their education can contribute to the development of such literacy. The creation of outdoor environments for children is thus an important sustainability issue.

  • Child healthcare nurses’ encounters with parents whose child is overweight
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic journal of nursing research. - : SAGE Publications. - 2057-1585 .- 2057-1593. ; 39:3, s. 152-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nurses in the Swedish child healthcare system can make a difference by offering support to parents of children who areoverweight or at risk of becoming so. Still, research concerning these nurses’ clinical practice when encountering parents whosechild is overweight is inadequate. The aim of this study was to describe nurses’ clinical practice when encountering parents of anoverweight child. Data were collected through interviews with 10 nurses, and a content analysis approach was used. The nurses’clinical practice is described in relation to Olander’s theory: Individualising actions, Creating a dialogue, Documenting, andFocusing on normality. This study adds knowledge about nurses’ clinical practice in encounters with parents whose child isoverweight. Also, it adds information on how an issue in a specific care situation may contribute to further understanding anduse of an existing theory in caring science.

  • Kontrollerade unga : Tvångspraktiker på institution
  • 2018. - 1

  • Using systems thinking to increase understanding of the innovation system of healthcare organisations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Organization & Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-7266 .- 1758-7247. ; 36:9, s. 179-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: This paper applies systems thinking modelling to enhance the dynamic understanding of how to nurture an innovative culture in healthcare organisations to develop the innovation system in practice and speed up the innovative work. The model aims to provide a holistic view of a studied healthcare organisation's innovation processes, ranging from managerial values to its manifestation in improved results.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study is based on empirical material from a healthcare unit that, within a few years, changed from having no innovations to repeatedly generating innovations. The study uses the modelling language of causal loop diagrams (CLDs) in the system dynamics methodology to identify the key important aspects found in the empirical material.FINDINGS: The proposed model, based on the stories of the interviewees, explores the dynamics of inertia when nurturing an innovative culture, identifying delays attributed to the internal change processes and system relationships. These findings underscored the need for perseverance when developing an innovative culture in the entrepreneurial phases.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The approach of using systems thinking to make empirical healthcare research results more tangible through the visual notations of CLDs and mental simulations is believed to support exploring complex phenomena to induce and nurture both individual and organisational learning.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The results from this approach provide deepened analysis and provoke the systems view to explain how the nurturing of the culture can accelerate the innovation processes, which helps practitioners and researchers to further expand their understanding of their healthcare contexts.

  • Participation in school and physical education in juvenile idiopathic arthritis in a Nordic long-term cohort study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Rheumatology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-0096. ; 17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundThe aim of the study was to describe school attendance and participation in physical education in school among children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).MethodsConsecutive cases of JIA from defined geographical areas of Finland, Sweden and Norway with disease onset in 1997 to 2000 were followed for 8 years in a multi-center cohort study, aimed to be as close to population-based as possible. Clinical characteristics and information on school attendance and participation in physical education (PE) were registered.ResultsParticipation in school and in PE was lowest initially and increased during the disease course. Eight years after disease onset 228/274 (83.2%) of the children reported no school absence due to JIA, while 16.8% reported absence during the last 2 months due to JIA. Full participation in PE was reported by 194/242 (80.2%), partly by 16.9%, and none by 2.9%. Lowest participation in PE was found among children with ERA and the undifferentiated categories. Absence in school and PE was associated with higher disease activity measures at the 8-year visit. School absence >1day at baseline predicted use of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, including biologics (DMARDs) (OR 1.2 (1.1-1.5)), and non-remission off medication (OR 1.4 (1.1-1.7) 8 years after disease onset.ConclusionSchool absence at baseline predicted adverse long-term outcome. In children and adolescents with JIA participation in school activities is mostly high after 8years of disease. For the minority with low participation, special attention is warranted to promote their full potential of social interaction and improve long-term outcome.
