  • Meteor studies in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 143, s. 245-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We summarize the state of the art of a program of UV observations from space of meteor phenomena, a secondary objective of the JEM-EUSO international collaboration. Our preliminary analysis indicates that JEM-EUSO, taking advantage of its large FOV and good sensitivity, should be able to detect meteors down to absolute magnitude close to 7. This means that JEM-EUSO should be able to record a statistically significant flux of meteors, including both sporadic ones, and events produced by different meteor streams. Being unaffected by adverse weather conditions, JEM-EUSO can also be a very important facility for the detection of bright meteors and fireballs, as these events can be detected even in conditions of very high sky background. In the case of bright events, moreover, exhibiting some persistence of the meteor train, preliminary simulations show that it should be possible to exploit the motion of the ISS itself and derive at least a rough 3D reconstruction of the meteor trajectory. Moreover, the observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, exotic particles whose existence has been suggested by some theoretical investigations. Nuclearites are expected to move at higher velocities than meteoroids, and to exhibit a wider range of possible trajectories, including particles moving upward after crossing the Earth. Some pilot studies, including the approved Mini-EUSO mission, a precursor of JEM-EUSO, are currently operational or in preparation. We are doing simulations to assess the performance of Mini-EUSO for meteor studies, while a few meteor events have been already detected using the ground-based facility EUSO-TA.

  • First observations of speed of light tracks by a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25(th) of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Finally, we present a first reconstruction of the direction of the laser tracks relative to the detector.

  • Influence of multiple sources on the two-neutron correlation function in Ni-induced, intermediate energy, heavy ion reactions
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The strength of the neutron-neutron correlation function from the E=45A MeV Ni-58+Al-27, Ni-nat, and Au-197 reactions depends on the neutron parallel velocity. This indicates the presence of multiple sources of neutron emission. We find these sources consistent with a dissipative, binary reaction mechanism as it is described by, e.g., Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck calculations.

  • Neutron-neutron Intensity Interferometry in E/A = 45 MeV 58Ni + 27Al, 58Ni and 197Au Reactions
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small angle neutron-neutron correlations have been measured for the E/A=45 MeV 58Ni+27Al, natNi, and 197Au reactions. Two-neutron correlation functions, both integrated and gated on the total momentum of the neutron pair, have been constructed. In order to explain these data, a fraction of fast "dynamical" emission is needed in addition to slower evaporative emission. The overall emission time scale is shorter for the symmetric system, indicating that the dynamical component is stronger in this case.

  • A Season of American Football Is Not Associated with Changes in Plasma Tau.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of neurotrauma. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1557-9042 .- 0897-7151. ; 34:23, s. 3295-3300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • American football athletes are routinely exposed to sub-concussive impacts over the course of the season. This study sought to examine the effect of a season of American football on plasma tau, a potential marker of axonal damage. Nineteen National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football athletes underwent serial blood sampling over the course of the 2014-2015 season at those times in which the number and magnitude of head impacts likely changed. Non-contact sport controls (NCAA men's swim athletes; n = 19) provided a single plasma sample for comparison. No significant differences were observed between control swim athletes and football athletes following a period of non-contact (p = 0.569) or a period of contact (p = 0.076). Football athletes categorized as starters (n = 11) had higher tau concentrations than non-starters (n = 8) following a period of non-contact (p = 0.039) and contact (p = 0.036), but not higher than swimmers (p = 1.000 and p = 1.000, respectively). No difference was noted over the course of the season in football athletes, irrespective of starter status. Despite routine head impacts common to the sport of American football, no changes were observed over the course of the season in football athletes, irrespective of starter status. Further, no difference was observed between football athletes and non-contact control swim athletes following a period of non-contact or contact. These data suggest that plasma tau is not sensitive enough to detect damage associated with repetitive sub-concussive impacts sustained by collegiate-level football athletes.
