- The radiation tolerance of three multimode optical fibres has been investigated to establish their suitability for the use in the front-end data links of the ATLAS experiment. Both gamma and neutron irradiation studies are reported. A step-index fibre with a pure silica core showed an induced attenuation of similar to 0.05 dB/m at 330 kGy(Si) and 1 x 10(15) n(1 MeV Si)/cm(2) and is suitable for use with the inner detector links which operate at 40-80 Mb/s. A graded-index fibre with a predominantly germanium-doped core exhibits an induced attenuation of similar to 0.1 dB/m at 800 Gy(Si) and 2 x 10(13) n(1 MeV Si)/cm(2) and is suitable for the calorimeter links which operate at 1.6 Gb/s. Measurements of the dose rate dependence of the induced attenuation indicate that the attenuation in ATLAS will be lower.

- Over the past decades, we have witnessed changes into how individual’s pay. In particular, there has been a drop in the use of cash as payment instrument both in terms of value and frequency. Consequently, the amount of outstanding cash is shrinking. For instance, in Sweden the level of cash is around 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product. This might be a tipping point for when cash is of practical use. In the paper, we present a research model that explores when merchants will stop accepting cash.

- We present a simple way of adjusting the output performance of end-pumped passively Q-switched lasers. The method is based on changing the size of the pump mode within the active medium, and the approach is demonstrated both in theory and in practice. We show that it is possible to modify the repetition rate from 7 kHz to 1 MHz and the pulse length from 6 to 30 ns for the laser used in the experiments.

- One of the principal goals in tissue engineering is to produce scaffold materials that will guide cells to differentiate and regenerate functional replacement tissue at the site of injury. Poly(l-lactide-co-1,5-dioxepan-2-one) [Poly(LLA-co-DXO)], a potential scaffolding material for bone tissue engineering, has high hydrophilicity. Previous in vitro studies using human osteoblast-like cells (HOBs) demonstrated greater cytocompatibility and enhanced osteogenic differentiation when HOBs were seeded onto Poly(LLA-co-DXO) compared to Poly(llactide) [P(LLA)] scaffolds. The aim of the study was to identify the gene expression profiles of HOBs obtained from alveolar bone and grown on Poly(LLA-co-DXO) biodegradable polymer scaffolds compared to P(LLA) one. Illumina HumanWG-6 v3.0 Expression BeadChips were used for the gene expression analysis. Several genes were found as differentially expressed at 24 h and at 21 days. Expression of genes related to cell adhesion, cytoskeleton, antiapoptosis, proliferation, and bone mineralization was influenced by adding the monomer 1,5-dioxepan-2-one to the l-lactide. Genes related to three biological pathways involving Integrin, Notch, and Ras were found to be upregulated. For selected genes, results were confirmed by quantitative reverse transcriptase– polymerase chain reaction. Further, calcium content analysis revealed a significant enhancement of calcium deposition on both tested scaffolds. This observation was confirmed by Von Kossa and Alizarin Red S staining. Findings of this study are relevant to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the behavior of HOBs in bone regenerative procedure.
