  • Operationalizing opportunities in entrepreneurship research : use of data envelopment analysis
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 37:1, s. 39-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the impressive development of substantive theories in entrepreneurship, without the development of measurement theories, further advancement of the field is problematic. In particular, the notion of opportunities, central to entrepreneurship research, requires adequate macro-level operationalization. We demonstrate how to employ data envelopment analysis (DEA) to operationalize not only innovative opportunities, but also technological arbitrage opportunities. We provide an illustrative example based on a sample of 66 countries during the period of 1993-2002. We include estimates of innovative and arbitrage opportunities for possible use by other scholars, discuss the promise and limitations of such estimates, demonstrate how both innovative and arbitrage opportunities correlate with the rates of entrepreneurial activity, and suggest several possible directions for future research.

  • A comparative study of two European business incubators
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of small business management (Print). - 0047-2778 .- 1540-627X. ; 36:1, s. 30-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to contribute to the literature on the management of SME support arrangements, such as new business incubation programs, by presenting two European case studies of such arrangements. In the case studies, we have tried to identify management practices that seem to work well in both cases. The literature abounds with "success stories" of for example individual science parks but such stories tend to have two major shortcomings. First, what constitutes success is seldom defined. Second, it is difficult to determine to what degree this success depends on local factors and to what degree it can be attributed to the management practices of the support arrangement. This study discusses the management practices of these two arrangements against the background of their regional settings.

  • Entrepreneurial intent among students in Scandinavia and in the USA
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Enterprise and Innovation Management Studies. - : Carfax Publishing. - 1463-2446. ; 2:2, s. 145-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An application of the theory of planned behaviour is developed here to analyse factors in. uencing entrepreneurial intent among university students. The study provides a test of the robustness of the intent approach using international comparisons. The samples are from Finland (Helsinki University of Technology), Sweden (Linko¨ping University), USA (Stanford University and University of Colorado, Colorado Springs), and the UK (London Business School). The international comparisons indicate a good robustness of the model. Perceived behavioural control emerges as the most important determinant of entrepreneurial intent.

  • How culture molds the effects of self efficacy and fear of failure on entrepreneurship
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Taylor & Francis (Routledge): SSH Titles. - 1464-5114 .- 0898-5626. ; 25:9-10, s. 756-780
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor and the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness study for 42 countries to investigate how the effects of individual's self-efficacy and of fear of failure on entrepreneurial entry are contingent on national cultural practices. Using multi-level methodology, we observe that the positive effect of self-efficacy on entry is moderated by the cultural practices of institutional collectivism and performance orientation. Conversely, the negative effect of fear of failure on entry is moderated by the cultural practices of institutional collectivism and uncertainty avoidance. We discuss the implications for theory and methodological development in culture and entrepreneurship.

  • The Usefulness of Network Experiential Knowledge in the Internationalization Process
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on knowledge as one of the most critical competitive factors and the capability of the internationalizing firm. It contributes to internationalization research by connecting the view of embedded networks as knowledge generators to the view of experiential knowledge acquisition in the internationalization process of firms. The thesis identifies a specific form of experiential knowledge: “network experiential knowledge” defined as the experiential knowledge a firm accumulates in its network of embedded business relationships. The internationalization process implies use of knowledge, and also that not all knowledge is perceived as equally useful by firms. There was therefore reason to study network experiential knowledge and its usefulness. Thus, the general purpose of this thesis is to study the usefulness of network experiential knowledge in the internationalization process of firms. The thesis shows, through qualitative and quantitative research, that network experiential knowledge is perceived as useful to firms, in their development of ongoing international business, and that this knowledge is embedded in networks of business relationships. It might be in the whole network but it can also be in a part of the network. The thesis shows that the perceived usefulness of network experiential knowledge is affected by variation in country markets and international experience. The effects of need of knowledge, market variation, cost, product standardization, and involvement on the usefulness of knowledge from client’s network is investigated and shown. The thesis also demonstrates that perceived usefulness of network experiential knowledge has an effect on firm performance.

  • Innovation in New Firms : Examining the role of knowledge and growth willingness
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Most policy-makers and academics acknowledge that new firms are vital for the prosperity and renewal of economies and the generation of new innovations. However, scholars and practitioners alike still have limited knowledge about how new firms are able to develop and launch innovations. This is surprising given that innovation is an important means of competition and growth for new firms, especially in industries where customer demands and technology fluctuate frequently. This dissertation examines why some new firms are able to innovate while others are not. In doing so, the study builds upon conceptual arguments concerning the absorptive capacity of firms (i.e. their knowledge acquisition, assimilation, transformation, and exploitation activities) and longitudinal empirical data from over 300 new firms in the Swedish TIME sector. The detailed findings help to open up the “black box” relationships among different capabilities and types of knowledge (e.g. market and technological) in order to explain innovation, as well as how growth willingness and environmental dynamism affect these relationships The results thus shed light on central questions in Entrepreneurship research as well as how entrepreneurs can purposefully affect the innovative behaviour of their firms.

  • Growth through Internationalization : A Knowledge Perspective on SMEs
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Drawing on Penrose’s theory of the growth of the firm, the international business literature, the literature on the knowledge-based view, organizational learning, and absorptive capacity, this dissertation addresses four research questions: 1) What are the effects of downstream international activities (sales and marketing completed abroad) and upstream international activities (purchasing, production, and R&D completed abroad) on the acquisition of market knowledge and technological knowledge? 2) What is the role of prior knowledge in these relationships? 3) What are the effects of the newly acquired knowledge on different growth outcomes? 4) What is the role of processes of knowledge transformation and exploitation in these relationships?Addressing these issues has practical relevance for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). On the one hand, international expansion might provide small and medium-sized firms with additional knowledge, enriching their limited resource base. On the other hand, internationalization might spread the limited resource base of SMEs too thin and create internal coordination problems.Longitudinal survey data from 885 Swedish international SMEs yielded the following results. First, downstream internationalization and upstream internationalization are important sources of new market and technological knowledge for SMEs. Second, while downstream internationalization directly brings new market and technological knowledge, the acquisition of new knowledge from upstream internationalization is enhanced by the firm’s prior endowment of knowledge. Third, knowledge acquired from internationalization contributes to a firm’s growth advantage in international markets and to its further internationalization, and it provides the basis for entrepreneurial actions such as venturing into new markets and reaching new international customers. However, the new knowledge base has no, or very little, effect on SMEs’ growth in domestic markets. Fourth, the relationships between knowledge acquired from internationalization and different growth outcomes are not accentuated by a firm’s knowledge management processes. These processes have only a direct effect on a firm’s growth advantage in international markets, its continued internationalization, and its entrepreneurial growth through the development and commercialization of new products/services in international markets.Overall, the study suggests that internationalization promotes the acquisition of new market knowledge and new technological knowledge, which in turn contribute to the growth of SMEs, especially in international markets.
