  • ANDES, the high resolution spectrograph for the ELT : science case, baseline design and path to construction
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: GROUND-BASED AND AIRBORNE INSTRUMENTATION FOR ASTRONOMY IX. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9781510653504 - 9781510653498
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs (UBV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of similar to 100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mu m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 mu m with the addition of a K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre-feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Its modularity will ensure that ANDES can be placed entirely on the ELT Nasmyth platform, if enough mass and volume is available, or partly in the Coude room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The ANDES project is carried forward by a large international consortium, composed of 35 Institutes from 13 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers which represent the majority of the scientific and technical expertise in the field among ESO member states.

  • DECam-GROWTH search for the faint and distant binary neutron star and neutron star-black hole mergers in O3a
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Revista Mexicana de Astronomia y Astrofisica. - : Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. - 1405-2059. ; , s. 91-99
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synoptic searches for the optical counterpart to a binary neutron star (BNS) or neutron star-black hole (NSBH) merger can pose significant challenges towards the discovery of kilonovae and performing multi-messenger science. In this work, we describe the advantage of a global multi-telescope network towards this end, with a particular focus on the key and complementary role the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) plays in multi-facility follow-up. We describe the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) Marshal, a common web application we built to ingest events, plan observations, search for transient candidates, and retrieve performance summary statistics for all of the telescopes in our network. Our infrastructure enabled us to conduct observations of two events during O3a, S190426c and S190510g. Furthermore, our analysis of deep DECam observations of S190814bv conducted by the DESGW team, and access to a variety of global follow-up facilities allowed us to place meaningful constraints on the parameters of the kilonova and the merging binary. We emphasize the importance of a global telescope network in conjunction with a power telescope like DECam in performing searches for the counterparts to gravitational-wave sources.

  • Antihyperon-hyperon production in the threshold region at LEAR
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: PHYSICS OF ATOMIC NUCLEI. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. ; , s. 1460-1466
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The experiment PSI185 studies the antihyperon-hyperon production in antiproton-proton annihilation at LEAR/CERN up to 2 GeV/c. This is achieved by investigation of the channels (p) over bar p --> <(Lambda)over bar>Lambda, <(Lambda)over bar>Sigma(0) + c.c.

  • SAFETY AND TOLERABILITY OF TERIFLUNOMIDE IN CLINICAL STUDIES
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGY NEUROSURGERY AND PSYCHIATRY. - : BMJ. - 0022-3050 .- 1468-330X. ; 86:11
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Teriflunomide, approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, has a well-characterized safety profile based on individual clinical studies. We report pooled safety and tolerability data from four, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of teriflunomide. Post-approval updates on hair thinning and pregnancy outcomes, sometimes concerns for patients initiating teriflunomide, are reported.MethodsData were pooled from phase 2 (NCT01487096) and phase 3 TEMSO (NCT00134563), TOWER (NCT00751881), and TOPIC (NCT00622700) studies. Patients were randomized to receive teriflunomide 14 mg, 7 mg, or placebo. Safety analyses were performed for all patients exposed to teriflunomide.ResultsThe pooled dataset included 3044 patients. Commonly reported adverse events (AEs) were in accordance with individual clinical studies, most being transient and mild-to-moderate in intensity. Incidence of hepatic AEs was higher in teriflunomide groups; however, serious hepatic AEs were similar across groups (∼2–3%). Hair thinning was higher in teriflunomide than placebo groups, but typically resolved on treatment without intervention and led to discontinuation in <2% of patients. No structural or functional abnormalities were reported in 42 newborns from teriflunomide-exposed parents.ConclusionsThese data from >6800 patient-years of teriflunomide exposure were consistent with individual studies and no new, unexpected safety signals were observed. • Current driven instability in finite beta plasmas
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 55th Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Plasma Physics, Denver CO, USA, Bulletin of the American Physical Society. ; 58:16, s. PP8.00102-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The induced electric field in a tokamak drives a parallel electron current flow. In an inhomogeneous, finite beta plasma, when this electron flow is non-negligible compared to the ion thermal speed, the Alfv\'{e}n mode wave solutions of the electromagnetic gyrokinetic equation can become an almost purely growing kink mode. Using the new ``low-flow'' version of the gyrokinetic code GS2 developed for momentum transport studies [Barnes et al 2013 to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett., arXiv: 1304.3633], we are able to model the effect of the induced parallel electric field on the electron distribution to study the impact of a current on stability. We identify high mode number kink modes in GS2 simulations and make comparisons to analytical theory in a sheared magnetic geometry. We find a reassuring agreement with analytical results both in terms of parametric dependences of mode frequencies and growth rates, and regarding the radial mode structure.
