  • Search for decoherence from quantum gravity with atmospheric neutrinos
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - 1745-2481 .- 1745-2473. ; 20:6, s. 913-920
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutrino oscillations at the highest energies and longest baselines can be used to study the structure of spacetime and test the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. If the metric of spacetime has a quantum mechanical description, its fluctuations at the Planck scale are expected to introduce non-unitary effects that are inconsistent with the standard unitary time evolution of quantum mechanics. Neutrinos interacting with such fluctuations would lose their quantum coherence, deviating from the expected oscillatory flavour composition at long distances and high energies. Here we use atmospheric neutrinos detected by the IceCube South Pole Neutrino Observatory in the energy range of 0.5-10.0 TeV to search for coherence loss in neutrino propagation. We find no evidence of anomalous neutrino decoherence and determine limits on neutrino-quantum gravity interactions. The constraint on the effective decoherence strength parameter within an energy-independent decoherence model improves on previous limits by a factor of 30. For decoherence effects scaling as E2, our limits are advanced by more than six orders of magnitude beyond past measurements compared with the state of the art. Interactions of atmospheric neutrinos with quantum-gravity-induced fluctuations of the metric of spacetime would lead to decoherence. The IceCube Collaboration constrains such interactions with atmospheric neutrinos.

  • A Search for IceCube Sub-TeV Neutrinos Correlated with Gravitational-wave Events Detected By LIGO/Virgo
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 959:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LIGO/Virgo collaboration published the catalogs GWTC-1, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3 containing candidate gravitational-wave (GW) events detected during its runs O1, O2, and O3. These GW events can be possible sites of neutrino emission. In this paper, we present a search for neutrino counterparts of 90 GW candidates using IceCube DeepCore, the low-energy infill array of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The search is conducted using an unbinned maximum likelihood method, within a time window of 1000 s, and uses the spatial and timing information from the GW events. The neutrinos used for the search have energies ranging from a few GeV to several tens of TeV. We do not find any significant emission of neutrinos, and place upper limits on the flux and the isotropic-equivalent energy emitted in low-energy neutrinos. We also conduct a binomial test to search for source populations potentially contributing to neutrino emission. We report a nondetection of a significant neutrino-source population with this test.

  • TESS Spots a Hot Jupiter with an Inner Transiting Neptune
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8213 .- 2041-8205. ; 892:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hot Jupiters are rarely accompanied by other planets within a factor of a few in orbital distance. Previously, only two such systems have been found. Here, we report the discovery of a third system using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The host star, TOI-1130, is an eleventh magnitude K-dwarf in Gaia G-band. It has two transiting planets: a Neptune-sized planet (3.65 ± 0.10 R\oplus) with a 4.1 days period, and a hot Jupiter (1.50-0.22+0.27 RJ) with an 8.4 days period. Precise radial-velocity observations show that the mass of the hot Jupiter is 0.974-0.044+0.043 MJ. For the inner Neptune, the data provide only an upper limit on the mass of 0.17 MJ (3σ). Nevertheless, we are confident that the inner planet is real, based on follow-up ground-based photometry and adaptive-optics imaging that rule out other plausible sources of the TESS transit signal. The unusual planetary architecture of and the brightness of the host star make TOI-1130 a good test case for planet formation theories, and an attractive target for future spectroscopic observations.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 24:2, s. 237-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The excitation function for the elastic-scattering reaction p( 18 Ne, p) 18 Ne was measured with the first radioactive beam from the SPIRAL facility at the GANIL laboratory and with a solid cryogenic hydrogen target. Several broad resonances have been observed, corresponding to new excited states in the unbound nucleus 19 Na. In addition, two-proton emission events have been identified and are discussed.

  • Spectroscopic and structural investigations reveal the signaling mechanism of a luminescent molybdate sensor
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0020-1669 .- 1520-510X. ; 50:3, s. 1105-1115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A heteroditopic ligand H 2-L consisting of a dihydroxybenzene (catechol)-unit linked via an amide bond to a pyridyl-unit and its methyl-protected precursor Me 2-L were synthesized, characterized, and their photophysical properties investigated. The three accessible protonation states of the ligand, H 2-L+, H 2-L, and H-L-, showed distinct 1 H NMR, absorption and emission spectroscopic characteristics that allow pH-sensing. The spectroscopic signatures obtained act as a guide to understand the signaling mechanism of the luminescent pH and molybdate sensor [Re-(bpy)(CO) 3(H 2-L)]+. It was found that upon deprotonation of the 2-hydroxy group of H 2-L, a ligand-based absorption band emerges that overlaps with the Re(dπ)-bpy metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band of the sensor, reducing the quantum yield for emission on excitation in the 370 nm region. In addition, deprotonation of the catechol-unit leads to quenching of the emission from the Re(dn)→ bpy 3MLCT state, consistent with photoinduced electron transfer from the electron-rich, deprotonated catecholate to the Re-based luminophore. Finally, reaction of 2 equiv of [Re(bpy)(CO) 3(H 2-L)]+ with molybdate was shown to give the zwitterionic Mo(VI) complex [MoO 2{Re(CO) 3-(bpy)(L)} 2], as confirmed by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure determination revealed that two fully deprotonated sensor molecules are bound via their oxygen-donors to a cis-dioxo-MoO 2 center.

  • Exploring the properties of low-frequency radio emission and magnetic fields in a sample of compact galaxy groups using the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 622
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Data Release I to identify the groups of galaxies (and individual galaxies) from the Hickson compact groups (HCG) and magnitude-limited compact groups (MLCG) samples that emit at the frequency of 150 MHz, characterise their radio emission (extended or limited to the galaxies), and compare new results to earlier observations and theoretical predictions. The detection of 73 systems (and 7 more - probably) out of 120, of which as many as 17 show the presence of extended radio structures, confirms the previous hypothesis of the common character of the magnetic field inside galaxy groups and its detectability. In order to investigate the future potential of low-frequency radio studies of galaxy groups, we also present a more detailed insight into four radio-emitting systems, for which the strength of the magnetic field inside their intergalactic medium (IGM) is calculated. The estimated values are comparable to that found inside star-forming galaxies, suggesting a dynamical and evolutionary importance of the magnetic field in galaxy groups.

  • Photoluminescence from silicon nanoparticles embedded in ammonium silicon hexafluoride
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6528 .- 0957-4484. ; 21:43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Silicon (Si) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by transforming a Si wafer surface to ammonium silicon hexafluoride (ASH) or (NH4)(2)SiF6 under acid vapor treatment. Si-NPs which were found to be embedded within the polycrystalline (ASH) layer exhibit a strong green-orange photoluminescence (PL). Differential PL measurements revealed a major double component spectrum consisting of a broad band associated with the ASH-Si wafer interfacial porous oxide layer and a high energy band attributable to Si-NPs embedded in the ASH. The origin of the latter emission can be explained in terms of quantum/spatial confinement effects probably mediated by oxygen related defects in or around Si-NPs. Although Si-NPs are derived from the interface they are much smaller in size than those embedded within the interfacial porous oxide layer (SiOx, x > 1.5). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combined with Raman scattering and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the presence of Si-NP and Si-O bondings pointing to the role of oxygen related defects in a porous/amorphous structure. The presence of oxygen of up to 4.5 at.% in the (NH4)(2)SiF6 layer was confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis.

  • Capturing ambiguity in artifacts to support requirements engineering for self-adaptive systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - 1613-0073. ; 1796
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-adaptive systems (SAS) automatically adjust their behavior at runtime in order to manage changes in their user requirements and operating context. To achieve this goal, a SAS needs to carry knowledge in artifacts (e.g., contextual goal models) at runtime. However, identifying, representing, and refining requirements and their context to create and maintain such artifacts at runtime is a challenging task, especially if the runtime environment is not very well known. In this short paper, we present an early concept to requirements engineering for the implementation of SAS in the context of uncertainty. Especially the wide variety of knowledge materialized in artifacts created during software engineering activities at design time is considered. We propose to start with a list of ambiguous requirements - or under-specified requirements -, leaving the ambiguity in the requirements, which will in the later steps be resolved further as more information is known. In contrast to conventional requirements engineering approaches, not all ambiguous requirements will be resolved. Instead, ambiguities serve as key input for self-adaptation. We present five steps for the resolution of the ambiguity. For each step, we describe its purpose, identified challenges, and resolution ideas. Copyright © 2017 for this paper by its authors.
