    • Hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixers based on superconducting ultra-thin NbN films are largely used for THz spectroscopy for space and ground-based observations. Performance of the HEB mixers directly depends on the details of the structure and composition of thin film surface, as well as the nitrogen composition and its depth distribution. In this work, we present the study of the composition and the surface oxidation state of NbN films grown at two different temperatures and of 5 and 10 nm thickness.

  • The Herschel-Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI)

    • Aims: This paper describes the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) that was launched onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory in May 2009. Methods: The instrument is a set of 7 heterodyne receivers that are electronically tuneable, covering 480-1250 GHz with SIS mixers and the 1410-1910 GHz range with hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers. The local oscillator (LO) subsystem comprises a Ka-band synthesizer followed by 14 chains of frequency multipliers and 2 chains for each frequency band. A pair of auto-correlators and a pair of acousto-optical spectrometers process the two IF signals from the dual-polarization, single-pixel front-ends to provide instantaneous frequency coverage of 2 × 4 GHz, with a set of resolutions (125 kHz to 1 MHz) that are better than 0.1 km s-1. Results: After a successful qualification and a pre-launch TB/TV test program, the flight instrument is now in-orbit and completed successfully the commissioning and performance verification phase. The in-orbit performance of the receivers matches the pre-launch sensitivities. We also report on the in-orbit performance of the receivers and some first results of HIFI's operations. Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA.

  • A Low-loss D-band Chip-to-Waveguide Transition Using Unilateral Fin-line Structure

    • This paper presents a D-band interconnect realized using unilateral finline structure. The interconnect consists of a microstrip line implemented on a 75μm-thick SiC substrate. The line then couples to a unilateral finline taper that is mounted in the E-plane of a standard WR-6.5 D-band waveguide. The interconnect achieves low insertion loss and covers very wide frequency range. The measured minimum insertion loss is 0.67 dB and the maximum is 2 dB per transition across the entire D-band covering the frequency range 110-170 GHz. The transition does not require any galvanic contacts nor any special processing and can be implemented in any of the commercially available semiconductor technologies. This solution provides low-loss wideband packaging technique that enables millimeter-wave systems assembly using a high-performance simple approach.

  • Compact Low-Loss Chip-to-Waveguide and Chip-to-Chip Packaging Concept Using EBG Structures

    • This letter presents a novel approach for packaging millimeter-wave (mmW) and terahertz (THz) circuits. The proposed technique relies on using an on-chip coupling structure that couples the signal to a quarter-wavelength cavity, which in turn couples to either a waveguide (WG) or another chip. The solution also uses a periodic electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure that controls the electromagnetic wave and prevents field leakage in undesired directions. The proposed solution is fabricated and demonstrated at the D-band (110-170 GHz), and the measurement results show that it achieves a minimum insertion loss of 0.8 and a 3-dB bandwidth extending from 124 to 161 GHz. The proposed approach does not require any galvanic contacts and can be used for packaging integrated circuits in WG modules as well as for chip-to-chip communication.

    • This paper presents the studies of high-quality 5 nmthin NbN films deposited by means of reactive DC magnetronsputtering at room temperature. The deposition withoutsubstrate heating offers major advantages from a processingpoint of view and motivates the extensive composition- andsurface characterization and comparison of the present filmswith high quality films grown at elevated temperatures.Monocrystalline NbN films have been epitaxially grown ontohexagonal GaN buffer-layers (0002) and show a distinct, lowdefect interface as confirmed by High-Resolution TEM. Thecritical temperature Tc of films on the GaN buffer-layer reached10.4 K. Furthermore, a poly-crystalline structure was observedon films grown onto Si (100) substrates, exhibiting a Tc of 8.1 Kalbeit a narrow transition from the normal to thesuperconducting state. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy andreflected electron energy loss spectroscopy verified that thecomposition of NbN was identical irrespectively of appliedsubstrate heating. Moreover, the native oxide layer at the surfaceof NbN has been identified as NbO2 and thus, is in contrast to theNb2O5, usually claimed to be formed at the surface of Nb whenexposed to air. These findings are of significance since it wasproven the possibility of growing epitaxial NbN onto GaN bufferlayer in the absence of high temperatures hence paving the wayto employ NbN in more advanced fabrication processes involvinga higher degree of complexity. The eased integration andemployment of lift-off techniques could, in particular, lead toimproved performance of cryogenic ultra-sensitive terahertzelectronics.

    • The pressing demand for mm-wave cryogenic radio astronomy receivers with increasing instantaneous bandwidth has spurred interest in more complex intermediate frequency amplifier configurations, like the balanced amplifier, as the traditional options have increasing difficulties to comply either with the noise or the input matching specifications. This solution is typically penalized by the slight increment in noise produced by the quadrature hybrid losses. We propose a balanced amplifier using a novel 3 dB quadrature hybrid coupler design with superconducting lines. The prototype unit built for the 4-12 GHz band integrates in the same module the hybrid coupler chips, the low noise amplifiers and the bias circuitry. The mechanical design allows for an independent testing of the individual amplifiers. The average noise temperature is 4.4 K, only 0.3 K more than the average of its amplifiers. The input reflection improves more than 10 dB. This compact balanced amplifier is also compared with a non-integrated version, showing an improvement in noise and reflection. It has been tested in a complete mm-wave receiver, with advantage over other IF schemes.
