  • EU FP7 INFSO-ICT-317669 METIS, D3.1 Positioning of multi-node/multi-antenna technologies
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This document describes the research activity in multi-node/multi-antenna technologies within METIS and positions it with respect to the state-of-the-art in the academic literature and in the standardization bodies. Based on the state-of-the-art and as well as on the METIS objectives,we set the research objectives and we group the different activities (or technology components) into research clusters with similar research objectives. The technologycomponents and the research objectives have been set to achieve an ambidextrous purpose. On one side we aim at providing the METIS system with those technological components that are a natural but non-trivial evolution of 4G. On the other side, we aim at seeking for disruptivetechnologies that could radically change 5G with respect to 4G. Moreover, we mapped the different technology components to METIS’ other activities and to the overall goals of theproject.

  • Creep aspects of softwood from the cell-wall level to structures
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis addresses the intricate mechanical behaviour of natural materials, with a particular focus on wood. Despite millennia of use, understanding the mechanical behaviour of wood materials remains challenging due to their complex microstructures. For instance, they exhibit variations in properties among samples, nonlinear behaviour under elevated loads, and are sensitive to alterations in moisture content.Wood and related natural biobased materials hold immense potential due to their renewability, cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and ease of use in sustainable construction. Wood boasts remarkable stiffness and strength along its primary axis, surpassing many man-made materials in strength-to-weight ratios. However, its anisotropic and heterogeneous nature gives rise to challenges, necessitating the consideration of multiple parameters for accurate characterization to be used in design.Wood is intrinsically heterogeneous, leading to considerable variations in local stresses and deformations during loading. To address these microstructural effects on macroscopically measurable phenomena, mathematical homogenization methods, established since the 1970s, have found applications in material mechanics, including both fibre composites and wood.In recent years, there has been a growing focus on the viscoelastic behaviour of composites and timber structures, given their increased long-term use in load-carrying applications. While numerous investigations have explored the relationship between the microstructure of wood and its elastic properties, few studies have explored the connection between microstructure and viscoelastic properties. The thesis focuses on the static and, more notably, on the time-dependent mechanical properties of wood, bridging the gap from cell-wall creep to structures. It includes experiments and numerical work, culminating in the development of a material model suitable for orthotropic materials like wood. The multiscale model establishes a link between microstructural parameters and macroscopic properties, potentially applicable to various softwood species. Given the lack of shear creep data in the literature, the thesis introduces straightforward methods to characterize shear creep properties, addressing a significant knowledge gap.Furthermore, the thesis progresses from material-level experiments to higher length scales, demonstrating how the results can be applied to larger wooden structures, such as the tower for a counter-rotating axis tilted turbine. While these results require further validation in the absence of experimental data for wooden wind turbine structures, they offer useful insights into simulating creep behaviour in such applications. In conclusion, this thesis highlights the multifaceted nature of a natural material like wood, its mechanical challenges, and the promising research avenues for comprehensive understanding and practical use. The outcome provides contributions to the efficient utilization of wood in load-carrying structures and underlines the importance of ongoing research in this field.

  • Demonstration of Density Matrix Exponentiation Using a Superconducting Quantum Processor
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review X. - 2160-3308. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quantum computers hold the potential to outperform classical supercomputers at certain tasks. To implement algorithms on a quantum computer, programmers use conventional computers and hardware to create a set of classical control signals that implement a desired quantum algorithm. However, feeding the quantum information forward requires an inefficient conversion: extraction of quantum information, conversion to classical control signals, and reinjection of those signals into the system to implement quantum operations. Here, we demonstrate a more natively quantum strategy to programming quantum computers. Our approach uses the density matrix exponentiation (DME) protocol, a general technique for using a quantum state to enact a quantum operation. It can be thought of as a subroutine with which programmers can turn multiple copies of a quantum state into instructions for next steps in a quantum algorithm. We implement DME using two qubits in a superconducting quantum processor. Our implementation relies on a high-fidelity two-qubit gate and a novel technique called quantum measurement emulation to approximately reset a known quantum state. These developments enable us to demonstrate the DME protocol for the first time on a small-scale quantum processor and benchmark its performance. While DME was originally proposed in the context of a specific quantum machine-learning algorithm, it may also represent a fundamentally different approach to quantum programming. It allows the possibility of encoding quantum algorithms directly into quantum states and executing those algorithms on other quantum states, enabling a new class of efficient quantum algorithms.

  • The development of personalised cognitive prosthetics
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 30th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. ; , s. 787-790
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Persons suffering from mild dementia can benefit from a form of cognitive prosthetic which can be used to assist them with their day to day activities. Within our current work we are aiming to develop a successful user-validated cognitive prosthetic for persons with mild dementia. We have devised a three phased waterfall methodology to support our developments. Based on the evaluation of the first of these phases which involved the processes of user requirements gathering, prototype development and evaluation of in situ deployment of the technology we have been able to guide the technical development within the second phase of our work. Within this paper we provide an overview of the first phase of our methodology and demonstrate how we have used the results from this to guide the second phase of our work, especially with regards to the notion of personalisation.

  • Electrokinetic devices from polymeric materials
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There are multiple applications for polymers: our bodies are built of them, plastic bags and boxes used for storage are composed of them, as are the shells for electronics, TVs, computers, clothes etc. Many polymers are cheap, and easy to manufacture and process which make them suitable for disposable systems. The choice of polymer to construct an object will therefore highly influence the properties of the object itself. The focus of this thesis is the application of commonly used polymers to solve some challenges regarding integration of electrodes in electrokinetic devices and 3D printing. The first part of this thesis regards electrokinetic systems and the electrodes’ impact on the system. Electrokinetic systems require Faradaic (electrochemical) reactions at the electrodes to maintain an electric field in an electrolyte. The electrochemical reactions at the electrodes allow electron-to-ion transduction at the electrode-electrolyte interface, necessary to drive a current at the applied potential through the system, which thereby either cause flow (electroosmosis) or separation (electrophoresis). These electrochemical reactions at the electrodes, such as water electrolysis, are usually problematic in analytical systems and systems applied in biology. One solution to reduce the impact of water electrolysis is by replacing metal electrodes with electrochemically active polymers, e.g. poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT). Paper 1 demonstrates that PEDOT electrodes can replace platinum electrodes in a gel electrophoretic setup. Paper 2 reports an all-plastic, planar, flexible electroosmotic pump which continuously transports water from one side to the other using potentials as low as 0.3 V. This electroosmotic pump was further developed in paper 3, where it was made into a compact and modular setup, compatible with commercial microfluidic devices. We demonstrated that the pump could maintain an alternating flow for at least 96 h, with a sufficient flow of cell medium to keep cells alive for the same period of time. The second part of the thesis describes the use of 3D printers for manufacturing prototypes and the material requirements for 3D printing. Protruding and over-hanging structures are more challenging to print using a 3D printer and usually require supporting material during the printing process. In paper 4, we showed that polyethylene glycol (PEG), in combination with a carbonate-based plasticizer, functions well as a 3D printable sacrificial template material. PEG2000 with between 20 and 30 wt% dimethyl carbonate or propylene carbonate have good shear-thinning rheology, mechanical and chemical stability, and water solubility, which are advantageous for a supporting material used in 3D printing. The advances presented in this thesis have solved some of the challenges regarding electrokinetic systems and prototype manufacturing. Hopefully this will contribute to the development of robust, disposable, low-cost, and autonomous electrokinetic devices.

  • Water balance for landfills of different age
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hydrology. - 0022-1694 .- 1879-2707. ; 158:3-4, s. 203-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water-related processes in landfills are discussed with emphasis on internal processes such as field capacity, moisture variation in time and space, and macropore flow. Runoff production and evaporation from landfills in Sweden of different age are investigated. It is clarified in what ways and for how long a closed municipal landfill differs from an ordinary land area from a hydrological point of view.
