  • Pulse imaging and nonadiabatic control of solid-state artificial atoms
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 80:22, s. 220506-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transitions in an artificial atom, driven nonadiabatically through an energy-level avoided crossing, can be controlled by carefully engineering the driving protocol. We have driven a superconducting persistent-current qubit with a large-amplitude radio-frequency field. By applying a biharmonic wave form generated by a digital source, we demonstrate a mapping between the amplitude and phase of the harmonics produced at the source and those received by the device. This allows us to image the actual wave form at the device. This information is used to engineer a desired time dependence, as confirmed by the detailed comparison with a simulation. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

  • Benchmarking engineering curricula with the CDIO syllabus
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Engineering Education. - 0949-149X. ; 21:1, s. 121-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four internationally-renowned universities-Chalmers University of Technology, Linkoping University, Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA)-developed a benchmark survey that may be used by any engineering school to benchmark curricula for teaching of personal, interpersonal and system building skills. These skills are enumerated in the CDIO Syllabus. Teaching activities were categorized as Introduce, Teach or Utilize, based on intent, time spent, and linkage to learning objectives, assignments and assessment criteria. Interviews were used to collect the data from instructors of the schools' engineering programs. The data was then reduced and analyzed to illuminate patterns of teaching. The results indicate that much effort is expended in covering these topics, but often in an inefficient, uncoordinated and unplanned manner. For example, there are often frequent repetitions of introducing a topic, without ever teaching it. In other instances, students are expected to utilize knowledge without having been taught it. The results of the benchmark survey indicate that a consistent and deliberately designed curriculum in this area could demand no additional resources, yet provide a much more effective education. The survey gives useful indications of how to begin such a curriculum redesign process.

  • Suppression of higher order transverse modes and oxide modes in 1.3 µm InGaAs VCSELs by an inverted surface relief
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Technology Letters. ; 19, s. 327-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is shown, by a systematic variation of design parameters, that the use of an inverted surface relief is very effective for suppressing higher order transverse modes in oxide confined 1.3-mum InGaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). Single-mode emission is achieved for a large variety of oxide aperture and surface relief diameters, with optimum designs, having a surface relief with a diameter half of that of the oxide aperture, producing 1.1-1.3 mW of single-mode power. It is also shown that the anti-phase layer employed to enable the use of an inverted surface relief is effective for suppressing oxide modes that otherwise appear in oxide confined VCSELs with a large detuning between the gain peak and the cavity resonance

  • Assessing costs and benefits of improved soil quality management in remediation projects : A study of an urban site contaminated with PAH and metals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 707
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contaminants in the soil may threaten soil functions (SFs) and, in turn, hinder the delivery of ecosystem services (ES). A framework for ecological risk assessments (ERAs) within the APPLICERA - APPLICable site-specific Environmental Risk Assessment research project promotes assessments that consider other soil quality parameters than only contaminant concentrations. The developed framework is: (i) able to differentiate the effects of contamination on SFs from the effects of other soil qualities essential for soil biota; and (ii) provides a robust basis for improved soil quality management in remediation projects. This study evaluates the socio-economic consequences of remediation alternatives stemming from a Tier 1 ERA that focusses on total contaminant concentrations and soil quality standards and a detailed, site-specific Tier 3 Triad approach that is based on the APPLICERA framework. The present study demonstrates how Tier 1 and Tier 3 ERAs differ in terms of the socio-economic consequences of their remediation actions, as well as presents a novel method for the semi-quantitative assessment of on-site ES. Although the presented Tier 3 ERA is more expensive and time-consuming than the more traditional Tier 1 ERA approach, it has the potential to lower the costs of remediation actions, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, reduce other environmental impacts, and minimise socio-economic losses. Furthermore, the remediation actions stemming from the Tier 3 ERA were predicted to exert far less negative ES effects than the actions proposed based on the results of the Tier 1 ERA.
