  • The double-sided nature of lifestyle-oriented work within the Swedish equine sector : Characteristics and consequences for employee health and well-being
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis considers the nature of lifestyle-oriented work, i.e. making a livelihood based on leisure interest or personal lifestyle, and focuses on the perspective of employees within the Swedish equine sector. The purpose was to gain an increased understanding of the characteristics of lifestyle-oriented work and the consequences for health and well-being. The thesis has a case study research design with two embedded units, riding schools and trotting stables, and a mixed methodological approach based on questionnaires and interviews. The findings show that employees experienced their work as both important and attractive with loyalty, relations, and stimulation being important factors for work attractiveness (Paper I). The employees found their work meaningful and worked primarily to achieve self-realization and quality of life. Person–environment fit, task significance, and occupational culture emerged as important factors for meaningfulness. However, the work had an inherent duality as the same factors both promoted and challenged the experiences of work attractiveness and meaningfulness (Paper II). The safety climate was found to be relatively good, despite some risk acceptance (Paper III), although the results indicated shortcomings regarding occupational health and safety management (OHSM) (Papers III and IV). Moreover, motivation, management, occupational culture, and resources affect both participation and compliance in OHSM (Paper IV).Lifestyle-oriented work within the equine sector can be described as double-sided, i.e. both satisfying and demanding. The work is characterized by attraction, meaningfulness, prosocial behavior, and a strong occupational culture but also an acceptance of challenging working conditions, overwork and deficient conditions for OHSM. A systematic OHSM, where both health-promoting factors and risk factors are considered, is necessary to enhance employee health and well-being and to create attractive and sustainable employment.

  • Exploring communication processes in workplace meetings: A mixed methods study in a Swedish healthcare organization
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Work : A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation. - : IOS Press. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 54:3, s. 533-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: An efficient team and a good organizational climate not only improve employee health but also the health and safety of the patients. Building up trust, a good organizational climate and a healthy workplace requires effective communication processes. In Sweden, workplace meetings as settings for communication processes are regulated by a collective labor agreement. However, little is known about how these meetings are organized in which communication processes can be strengthened. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore communication processes during workplace meetings in a Swedish healthcare organization. METHODS: A qualitatively driven, mixed methods design was used with data collected by observations, interviews, focus group interviews and mirroring feedback seminars. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and conventional content analysis. RESULTS: The communication flow and the organization of the observed meetings varied in terms of physical setting, frequency, time allocated and duration. The topics for the workplace meetings were mainly functional with a focus on clinical processes. Overall, the meetings were viewed not only as an opportunity to communicate information top down but also a means by which employees could influence decision-making and development at the workplace. CONCLUSIONS: Workplace meetings have very distinct health-promoting value. It emerged that information and the opportunity to influence decisions related to workplace development are important to the workers. These aspects also affect the outcome of the care provided. © 2016 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

  • Hydrothermal Processing of Cereals Optimal Conditions for Phytete Degradation and Myo-Inositol Formation. Effect on Phytase Activity and Mineral Absorption.
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis was to optimise a hydrothermal process to degrade phytate (myo-inositol hexaphosphate), increase the level of free myo-inositol and preserve phytase activity in cereals with the purpose to achieve products with improved mineral bioavailability. Phytate is known to impair mineral absorption and myo-inositol is considered to be a semi-essential nutrient. The hydrothermal process comprised of alternating wet and dry steeping steps. Lactic acid solution of different concentrations was used in the wet steeps. The temperatures during the wet and dry steeps and the concentration of lactic acid used in the wet steeps were optimised to degrade phytate and increase the amount of free myo-inositol during the process. The first wet steep was in addition optimised to inactivate lipoxygenase and lipase, enzymes causing lipid oxidation that might shorten the shelf life of the products, while preserving the phytase activity. The microstructural changes of the phytate globoids in barley were also studied during the hydrothermal processing to evaluate where in the kernels phytate degrades. Evaluation of zinc and calcium absorption from the optimised hydrothermal barley product was performed in humans. With the use of a central composite experimental design we have identified optimal conditions for phytate degradation and free myo-inositol formation; in barley, wheat, rye and rice phytate was reduced by 94-99.8% and in barley free myo-inositol increased from 0.56 to 2.45 µmol/g d.m. It was not possible to preserve the phytase activity in barley during hydrothermal processing. The microstructural studies of barley showed the phytate degradation to be highest in scutellum and less in the aleurone layer. We found soaking conditions that completely inactivated lipoxygenase, reduced the activity of lipase with > 80% while preserved > 60% of the phytase activity. Zinc absorption improved from 11% to 25% when barley was hydrothermally processed and served as porridge (p
