  • A CAREER IN SHIPPING? IMAGE AND BACKGROUND FACTORS AS PREDICTORS
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Decision Sciences, Risk and Management. - 1753-7169 .- 1753-7177. ; 6:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The image of the shipping industry plays a vital role in developing the future of maritime transport. In order to attract young people to the shipping industry, it is crucial to understand the image the shipping industry has among young people and the anatomy of the concept in order to effectively promote careers in shipping, and to develop shipping as an attractive labour market for young people. This paper reports on the findings of a large-scale survey of the image of shipping and image-related concepts among upper secondary school pupils in Sweden, Norway, and Greece. We identify, define, and analyse empirically the anatomy of the image concept by means of multivariate statistical analysis.

  • A Normative Model for Regional University Network Collaboration in Education
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Creative Education. - 2151-4755 .- 2151-4771. ; 3, s. 1034-1042
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasing demand for more specialized courses and programs increases the need for universities to dif-ferentiate their educational offer and portfolio. Increasing the course portfolio combined with small stu-dent populations and at the same time ensuring high quality is a difficult challenge for most universities given their budget limitation and the access they have to educators in the specialized disciplines within their own organization. Pooling, coordination and utilization of resources through network creation and university collaborations is one option for coping with this challenge. This paper develops a normative model for intraregional university network collaboration in education aiming at preparing students for work in a particular industry. The paper deals with network organization, principles of operation, course struc-ture, course delivery, and supporting activities.

  • Seaport strategies for pre-emptive defence of market share under changing hinterland transport system performance
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 5:4-5, s. 432-448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Main deep sea ports that are market leaders in their regions will continuously defend their market shares. The most constructive way of defending market shares is to predict changes of important competitive factors in the markets and to react to factors representing threats by developing preemptive defence strategies. Two main competitive factors in the hinterland of main deep sea ports have been identified: the improving performance of road-rail intermodal transport systems and the development of new dedicated port hinterland transport systems, e.g., systems based on dry ports and direct rail shuttles. This paper analyses whether these two competitive factors in the focal port's hinterland will represent future threats to the port's market share of intercontinental container flows and derives effective pre-emptive strategies for the focal port's defence of its market share in competition with other main deep sea ports.

  • The Image Construct of Shipping

We also model the relationships between image components and various independent variables and between image components and career intentions for various segments of respondents. The results from this paper can be used as a base for explaining and understanding the image construct of young people’s perception of the shipping industry. Empirical observations and analyses support several aspects previously recognised by other researchers such as the importance of influence by family and friends, the incentive aspect of reward, importance of flexible career pathways, social and environmental aspects such as the possibility to combine work and family life, and ships as a place of work and living. Our study did not find any significant relationships between place of living and career-related indicators for pupils of general upper secondary schools, however, we did identify, “social” closeness to the sea, and interest in the shipping industry, as important career determinants. This observation has interesting promotional importance and potential usage. These determinants should influence the use of marketing communication channels. Modern social media could become powerful communication channels if they are able to combine the interest of sporting and leisure activities of young people with the friend and family dimension, acting as a community for sharing experiences and interests. Combined with targeting sporting and leisure events such as sailing and events for trying out sea-related activities there is potential for a strong marketing channel, targeting people at a younger age than traditional marketing strategies in the maritime industry.

  • The Perception and Image of Shipping
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: WMU Journal of Maritime Affairs. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1651-436X .- 1654-1642. ; 15:1, s. 41-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The image of the shipping industry plays a vital role in developing maritime transport as a major future, sustainable transport alternative. In particular, it is crucial to understand the image the shipping industry has among young people and the anatomy of the concept in order to be able to effectively promote careers in shipping, to cultivate shipping as an attractive labour market and to develop attractive educational programmes. The focus of this paper is the image of the shipping industry. This study reports on the findings of a large-scale survey of the image of shipping- and image-related concepts among upper secondary school pupils in Sweden, Norway and Greece. We define and analyse empirically by means of multivariate statistical analysis the anatomy of the image concept. We identify various image dimensions, estimate how young people rate the shipping industry along these dimensions and estimate their relative importance to young people who are planning their future careers. The results from this study can be used as a base for describing and explaining the images that young people have of the shipping industry. Such knowledge is fundamental for deriving and developing constructive strategies to promote careers in shipping, to adapt shipping to the expectations of young people and to develop creative and relevant educational programmes. Finally, understanding the image of shipping among young people is important not only for the shipping industry, but for other stakeholders as well, such as ship-owners associations, trade associations, labour unions, transport authorities and administrations and policy makers at the national and supra-national level.
