  • Country specific customisation of smart phones for emerging markets: insights from case studies in Iran and Turkey
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Economics and Globalisation. - 1741-5381 .- 1741-5373. ; 4:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Customisation can be placed in different phases of a product lifecycle and even during the use of a product. Effects of cultural differences and country specific characteristics on use of products and consequently country specific customisation are interesting from different perspectives such as business advantage and usability. In this study we did two case studies on first time users of smart phones in emerging markets of Iran and Turkey. We found out that there are some country specific needs and usability problems which may need country specific customisation. Fortunately customisation of smart phones after the standard production in regional markets is feasible because of the flexibility of standard software applications which can be installed on smart phones. In addition existing marketing infrastructures can be used for user research activities which are aimed for customisation. Innovative users also can participate in design for customisation.

  • CULTURAL CUSTOMIZATION OF MOBILE COMMUNICATION DEVICES’ COMPONENTS
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: DS 60: Proceedings of DESIGN 2010, the 11th International Design Conference, Dubrovnik, Croatia. - 9789537738037 ; , s. 137-146
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modularity of products and using a configuration system are two characteristics of mass customization, which has gained importance in contemporary industries. Culture is among those user characteristics which could affect product specifications. This paper aims to propose an approach for cultural customization of mobile communication devices based upon two elements: the Object Oriented structural design (which is compatible with configuration systems) and an integrative approach of culture oriented design. Experiments illustrate the validity of the proposed approach.

  • New Product Development and consumer culture: a review
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Product Development. - 1477-9056 .- 1741-8178. ; 16:1, s. 45-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper assesses how consumer culture has been addressed in New Product Development (NPD) literature. Based on a classification of NPD-related theories, a set of consumer-culture-related theories is used to identify and categorise relevant literature. User research is not found to be a core method used in the studied literature, and a large number of studies rely on secondary data. Most references study culture’s role in the final phases of NPD when the characteristics of a product are defined, but a lack of guidelines for considering culture in the early phases of NPD was identified.

  • Users’ participation in requirements gathering for smart phones applications in emerging markets
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 14:2, s. 265-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents insights from using requirements gathering techniques for country-specific customization of smart phones in two emerging markets, Iran and Turkey. In each country, a group of users participated in requirements gathering sessions that were aimed at developing design ideas for overcoming country-specific usability problems. Using qualitative content analysis, it was found that in each country some specific interaction activities were considered more when participants generated design ideas for country-specific usability problems. It was also found that even for similar usability problems, participants suggested country-specific solutions. Therefore, it is suggested that participation of local users in the design process should not be limited to identification of usability problems, but should also include the problem-solving phase that is usually a phase in design and development processes in which requirements gathering techniques are being used.

  • Nordic Post-Graduate Sustainable Design and Engineering Research from a Supervisor Perspective
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: NordDesign 2008. - Tallin, Estonia. ; , s. 171-180
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The multi- and interdisciplinary field of sustainable product innovation is rapidly expanding as an arena for scientific research. Universities in Nordic countries can be considered as an exponent of this type of research, with active research groups in, among others, Göteborg, Helsinki, Lund, Lyngby, Linköping and Trondheim. In the context of a Nordforsk funded project, seven second generation PhD supervisors from these universities, who have been active in this field for many years, discuss funding, publication, research traditions, education and supervision practices related to PhD research in this field. A number of recommendations to improve current practices are made, including the mapping currently existing differences in different academic institutions, studying the cross-over learning effects between academica and non-academic partners, and the development of ‘quality indicators’ of research in the SPI domain.

  • Circular design tools: (how) do they understand the consumer?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 3rd PLATE Product Lifetimes And The Environment Conference2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A move towards a circular economy will require fundamental changes in the way products and services are designed. However, tools for design in the  context of the circular economy  mostly have a narrow product or service focus without acknowledging the role of addressing behaviors and changing practices. This paper presents the results of an exploratory study investigating to what extent circular design tools consider and integrate aspects related to consumption and consumers. Using five circular tools publicly available, the research team analyzed how they address three aspects: circular consumer behaviors, consumer acceptance factors and conditions for adoption. Our analysis shows that although some of the tools acknowledge the need to gather insights around consumption and consumers, they do not address such aspects in detail. When the tools considered consumer aspects, they did so by acknowledging circular consumer behaviors. Rent and rebuy are the most frequently mentioned behaviors, while remunerate, retain and renounce are absent from the tools. Other behaviors such as receive, ritualize, regard, revalue, resell and relinquish are mentioned only once. The tools’ lack of consideration of acceptance factors and contextual conditions is slightly surprising, as most of them advocate for a human-centered approach to product development. Existing circular design tools could thus benefit from integrating concepts and frameworks from fields such as design for sustainable behavior and practice-oriented design.

  • The role of prototyping and co-creation in circular economy-oriented innovation: A longitudinal case study in the kitchen industry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production and Consumption. - 2352-5509. ; 39, s. 230-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To bridge the gap between the conceptualisation and implementation of circular value propositions, recent research efforts have focused on linking design-driven approaches with circular-oriented innovation. Such approaches can facilitate iterative processes that emphasise co-creation, prototyping, and real-life experimentation, ultimately promoting practical implementation. Still, there is a lack of understanding how companies go through the process of circular-oriented innovation, and how prototyping and co-creation support this process. This article presents a longitudinal case study of a four-year research project in which two academic teams, from Sweden and the Netherlands, collaborated with industrial partners to explore the potential of circular economy principles within the kitchen industry and develop a market-ready circular kitchen. The results indicate that prototyping plays a supportive role in the circular-oriented innovation process by making the concept of a circular economy tangible for stakeholders, facilitating knowledge exchange, and supporting overall developments towards collaborative circular supply chains. However, prototyping too early in the process linked to project deliverables carries a risk for ‘prototype fixation’, fragmented solutions, and missed opportunities for shared value creation. Co-creation was found particularly impactful during the early stages of circular-oriented innovation where it helped guide the project, enabled shared learning, built confidence and commitment amongst stakeholders, and supported the development of solutions tailored to demands of parties involved. The case study provides deeper insights on the role of prototyping and co-creation through diverse stages of the circular-oriented innovation process and extracts several lessons that might aid researchers and practitioners to navigate future circular-oriented innovation endeavours.

  • Lessons, narratives, and research directions for a sustainable circular economy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industrial Ecology. - : Wiley. - 1088-1980 .- 1530-9290. ; 27:1, s. 6-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current enthusiasm for the circular economy (CE) offers a unique opportunity to advance the impact of research on sustainability transitions. Diverse interpretations of CE by scholars, however, produce partly opposing assessments of its potential benefits, which can hinder progress. Here, we synthesize policy-relevant lessons and research directions for a sustainable CE and identify three narratives—optimist, reformist, and skeptical—that underpin the ambiguity in CE assessments. Based on 54 key CE scholars’ insights, we identify three research needs: the articulation and discussion of ontologically distinct CE narratives; bridging of technical, managerial, socio-economic, environmental, and political CE perspectives; and critical assessment of opportunities and limits of CE science–policy interactions. Our findings offer practical guidance for scholars to engage reflexively with the rapid expansion of CE knowledge, identify and pursue high-impact research directions, and communicate more effectively with practitioners and policymakers.

  • Low-hanging fruit : Measures to reduce fruit and vegetable waste at supermarkets
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • More than 30 percent of the food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally. This leads to a significant environmental impact in terms of inefficient use of natural resources, as well as economic costs and social and moral issues. The purpose of this thesis is to increase the understanding of fruit and vegetable waste at the retail level and provide recommendations for actions that aim to prevent and reduce food waste. Primary data were collected at three large supermarkets in Sweden in 2013 and 2019, with quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods applied. The results show that the total annual amount of fruit and vegetable waste for the three stores was 68 tonnes, the economic cost was SEK 1,628,000, and the global warming potential was 32,600 kg CO2-eq. The results also show that out of 81 fruit and vegetable categories, seven categories contributed to the majority of the waste in terms of mass, economic cost, and climate impact. These categories are apple, banana, grape, lettuce, pear, sweet pepper, and tomato. Furthermore, the role of employees is central to reducing food waste, and a cost benefit analysis revealed that it is financially justifiable to increase their working hours for preventive waste management in order to accomplish a reduction of waste without an economic loss for the stores. Between 2013 and 2019, the wasted mass was reduced by 12 percent while sales increased by 18 percent. The waste reduction can be explained by five effective measures concerning cooling facilities, product range, crediting, packaging, and best before date labels. The thesis comprised four papers and provides a base for planning and implementing reduction measures for the grocery retail sector, which will contribute to a sustainable food supply chain.

  • Product and Process Design for Successful Remanufacturing
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Remanufacturing is an industrial process where used products are restored to useful life. This dissertation describes how products can be designed to facilitate the remanufacturing process. It also describes how the remanufacturing processes can be improved to be more efficient. When comparing remanufacturing with other end-of-life scenarios, it is hard from an environmental perspective to determine which scenario is preferable. This research has shown that remanufacturing is preferable to new manufacturing from a natural resource perspective. With remanufacturing the efforts that initially was used to shape the product part is salvaged. Furthermore, it has been found that it is environmentally and economically beneficial to have products designed for remanufacturing. To avoid obsolescence, the products must be easy to upgrade with new technology in the remanufacturing process. In this dissertation, a generic remanufacturing process is described with all included steps that are needed to restore the products to useful life. In order to make the remanufacturing process more efficient, the products need to be adapted for the process. Therefore, the preferable products properties facilitating each step in the generic remanufacturing process have been identified. A matrix (RemPro) was created to illustrate the relation between each and every generic remanufacturing step and the preferable product properties.Remanufacturing case studies have shown that the companies performing remanufacturing often have problems with material flows, use of space and high inventory levels. This is often due to the uncertainties in the quality and the number of cores (used products) that will arrive at the remanufacturing plants. To overcome these problems, the remanufacturers need to achieve a better control over the product’s design and use phase, i.e. the life cycle phases that precede the remanufacturing process. This control is best performed by the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).Furthermore, it has been found that Swedish manufacturers often have a weak relation between its environmental management systems and product issues, such as design for environment/remanufacturing. Design for environmental/remanufacturing aspects should be a crucial part of the manufacturers environmental management systems (EMSs) as the products stand for much of the material flows at the manufacturing companies. If the external auditors address the manufacturers to have a life cycle perspective on their business the manufacturer would be more likely to adapt the remanufacturing aspects in their environmental management systems.
