  • The database of the PREDICTS (Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems) project
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2045-7758. ; 7:1, s. 145-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

  • Metadata descriptions and other interoperability standards : Deliverable D4.1
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An important aim of META-NORD is to upgrade and harmonize national language resources and tools in order to make them interoperable, within languages and across languages, with respect to their data formats and as far as possible also as regards their content. Since resources and to some extent tools will remain in one location – one of a number of META-NORD centers – the preferred way of accessing and utilizing resources and tools will be through metadata and APIs, allowing the assembly of on-the-fly tool-chains made up of standardized component language technology tools, processing distributed – and in many cases interlinked – language resources in standardized formats.

  • Role of Chromium and Vanadium in the Atmospheric Oxidation of Sulfur(IV)
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - 1352-2310. ; 32:4, s. 797-800
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxidation of HSO3- in aqueous solution has been studied in the presence of vanadium(V), chromium(III) and chromium(VI). Based on spectrophotometric kinetics data and product analysis it is concluded that the autoxidation rate of sulfur(IV) in slightly acidic solution is unaffected by the presence of vanadium(V) and chromium(III). Chromate(VI), on the other hand, oxidizes sulfur(IV) in a direct redox process in acidic solution. The overall rate of this reaction decreases with increasing pH and it becomes relatively slow in the atmospherically relevant pH range 4-6. Moreover, chromium(III) dominates strongly over chromium(VI) in the atmospheric aqueous phase. Hence, it is concluded that cations of vanadium vanadium and chromium have no significant influence on the atmospheric aqueous-phase oxidation of sulfur(IV) under most ambient atmospheric conditions. Only in very acidic droplets, direct redox between chromium(VI) and sulfite might be of some importance.

  • Some strategic national initiatives for the Swedish education in the geodata field
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the AGILE'2014 International Conference on Geographic Information Science. - : AGILE Digital Editions. - 9789081696043
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes national cooperation in Sweden launched by its universities and authorities, aimed at improving geodata education. These initiatives have been focused upon providing common access to geodata, the production of teaching materials in Swedish and organizing annual meetings for teachers. We argue that this type of cooperation is vital to providing high quality education for a poorly recognized subject in a country with a relatively small population.

  • Precautionary defaults - A new strategy for chemical risk management
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Human and Ecological Risk Assessment. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1080-7039 .- 1549-7860. ; 10, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to give adequate support to risk managers, new risk assessment methods should be developed that are (1) scientifically sound, (2) simplified, and (3) suited for precautionary risk management. In this Perspective we propose that the notion of a precautionary default can be a useful tool in the development of such methods. A precautionary default is a cautious or pessimistic assumption that is used in the absence of adequate information and that should be replaced when such information is obtained. Furthermore, we point out some promising research areas for the development of such indicators, viz. connections between chemical characteristics such as persistence and effect parameters, monitoring of contaminants in polar regions, monitoring of contaminants in breast milk, application of results from (human) toxicology in ecotoxicology and vice versa, (eco) toxicological test systems that are sensitive to effects on reproduction, and the application of bioinformatic methods to complex data, both in genomic research and in ecotoxicology. We conclude that precautionary decision-making does not require less science, but to the contrary it requires more science and improved communication between scientists and risk managers.

  • Receptivity, instability and breakdown of Görtler flow
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluid Mechanics. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0022-1120 .- 1469-7645. ; 682, s. 362-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Receptivity, disturbance growth and breakdown to turbulence in Gortler flow are studied by spatial direct numerical simulation (DNS). The boundary layer is exposed to free-stream vortical modes and localized wall roughness. We propose a normalization of the roughness-induced receptivity coefficient by the square root of the Gortler number. This scaling removes the dependence of the receptivity coefficient on wall curvature. It is found that vortical modes are more efficient at generating Gortler vortices than localized roughness. The boundary layer is most receptive to zero- and low-frequency free-stream vortices, exciting steady and slowly travelling Gortler modes. The associated receptivity mechanism is linear and involves the generation of boundary-layer streaks, which soon evolve into unstable Gortler vortices. This connection between transient and exponential amplification is absent on flat plates and promotes transition to turbulence on curved walls. We demonstrate that the Gortler boundary layer is also receptive to high-frequency free-stream vorticity, which triggers steady Gortler rolls via a nonlinear receptivity mechanism. In addition to the receptivity study, we have carried out DNS of boundary-layer transition due to broadband free-stream turbulence with different intensities and frequency spectra. It is found that nonlinear receptivity dominates over the linear mechanism unless the free-stream fluctuations are concentrated in the low-frequency range. In the latter case, transition is accelerated due to the presence of travelling Gortler modes.
