  • Gene expression profiling of the rat hippocampus one month after focal cerebral ischemia followed by enriched environment
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-3940 .- 1872-7972. ; 385:2, s. 173-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functional recovery after experimental stroke in rats is enhanced by environmental enrichment by stimulating plastic changes in brain regions outside the lesion, but the molecular mechanisms are not known. We investigated the effect of environmental enrichment after focal cerebral ischemia on cognitive recovery and hippocampal gene expression using microarray analysis. Rats placed in enriched environment (EE) for 1 month after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) showed significantly improved spatial memory in the Morris water maze compared to rats housed alone after MCAo. Microarray analysis suggested several EE-induced differences in neuronal plasticity-related genes, but these changes could not be confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR. This study highlights some of the potential problems associated with gene expression profiling of brain tissues. Further studies at earlier time points and in additional subregions of the brain are of interest in the search for molecular mechanisms behind EE-induced neuronal plasticity after ischemic stroke.

  • Transition to sustainable consumption patterns : Synthesis within the framework of the in-depth evaluation of the environmental objectives 2015
  • 2015
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY IS TASKED WITH REGULARLY CONDUCTING evaluations of the progress being made towards the 16 Swedish environmental quality objectives and the generational goal. The in-depth evaluation for 2015 will provide a basis for:• The government’s policies and priorities• Public debate• The planning and development of work relating to the environment by governmentagencies• Dialogue between stakeholdersAs a basis for the 2015 evaluation, certain aspects of the overarching analysis were carried out within the framework of three selected focus areas:• Environmental and climate-related efforts of the business sector• Sustainable consumption• Sustainable urban developmentThis report summarises the work being carried out within the framework of the focus area Sustainable consumption. By placing the spotlight on consumers in the transition, we highlight how different stakeholders in society can contribute to more environmentally compatible consumer behaviour and analyse how policies and instruments can incentivise environmentally sustainable choices and behaviour. This report has been prepared by the Environmental Protection Agency’s experts, working closely with a working group consisting of representatives of the Energy Agency, Public Health Agency, Agency for Marine and Water Management, Chemicals Agency, Consumer Agency, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), National Food Administration, Society for Nature Conservation, County Administration Board of Gotland, RUS - Regional Development & Cooperation within the environmental objectives system, Forest Industries Federation, Trade Federation, Consumers’ Association and Region Västra Götaland. The Agency for Growth Policy Analysis and the County Administrative Board of Dalarna also contributed to the work. The Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for the content of the report. The Agency would like to thank all the contributors for their commitment and contributions to this synthesis report. Eva Ahlner (project leader for the focus area ‘Sustainable consumption’) and Annica Carlsson (Section for Instruments, Natural Resources and Ecocycles) were responsible for writing this report.Stockholm, October 2015Björn RisingerDirector General

  • Dealing with fear : from the perspective of adolescent girls with cancer
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Oncology Nursing. - Oxon, United Kingdom : Elsevier. - 1462-3889 .- 1532-2122. ; 16:3, s. 286-292
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Previously fears in adolescents with cancer has been identified in relation to medical procedures, death, altered appearance and as having an overall influence on life, but to our knowledge young people's perspectives on dealing with fear have not been previously investigated.Purpose: To examine adolescents' perspectives on dealing with cancer related fear. Methods and sample: Six girls participated in qualitative interviews focussing on their fear and and how they dealt with it. Data were analysed by means of qualitative content analysis. Results: The results revealed two perspectives. First, the adolescents' own personal battle with fear. Second, they reported that they were not alone with their fear, as they shared it with significant others. An environment characterized by emotional presence helped them to deal with their fear, as well as prevented it from occurring. Conclusions: There is a need for staff and parents to be vigilant to the adolescents' need to feel cared for and allow them the opportunity to deal with their own fear, as at times they want to manage in their own way. Young patients have resources to cope with their fears and therefore should not be viewed as victims, but as young people with a great amount of competence, who benefit from a supportive environment.

  • Embodied suffering : experiences of fear in adolescent girls with cancer
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child Health Care. - London : Sage. - 1367-4935 .- 1741-2889. ; 12:2, s. 129-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previously, fear in adolescents with cancer has been sparsely described from an emic perspective. The aim of this study was to illuminate fear in adolescents with personal experience of cancer. The participants were six adolescent girls between the age of 14 and 16 years who were no longer under active treatment for cancer but still went for regular check-ups. Open interviews were conducted. Data were analysed according to the phenomenological hermeneutic method. In the result one main theme was identified: `an embodied fear — a threat to the personal self'. This theme was built up by three separate but intertwined themes: `experiencing fear related to the physical body', `experiencing existential fear' and `experiencing fear related to the social self'. In the comprehensive understanding the fear was interpreted from youth cultural aspects as well as a holistic perspective. The importance of professionals taking the whole person and their situation into account when meeting the fear is underlined.

  • Are they ready for this? : Experiences on implementing educational behavior-analytic interventions in Norwegian kindergartens
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis describes an investigation into experiences connected to the implementation of educational behavior-analytic interventions (ABA) for children with autism in kindergartens. The research questions and the methodological choices in this investigation evolved based on new experiences over the course of the research project. Three sub-studies were conducted: a single case study on the implementation of ABA teaching programs specifically targeting joint attention skills for children with autism in kindergartens (Study 1); a questionnaire survey on the experiences of ABA supervisors in implementing ABA in kindergartens (Study 2); and an interview study on the experiences of ABA teachers in implementing ABA in kindergartens (Study 3). During Study 1, it appeared that the teaching intensity of the targeted ABA teaching programs varied largely from what was initially planned for all four of the participating children. Under those conditions, the learning outcomes of the children also varied. With regard to Study 2, the survey data obtained from 29 ABA supervisors indicated that many children with autism who receive ABA in Norwegian kindergartens do not receive the number of teaching hours being planned for them. There also seems to be quite a large number of kindergartens that lack teaching teams and who receive supervision less than what is generally recommended to obtain the optimal outcome from ABA. With regard to Study 3, the interview data obtained from 10 ABA teachers illustrated how implementation factors such as compatibility, complexity, client responsiveness, and supervision can be manifested when ABA is implemented in the kindergarten. A main finding was that in some cases there seem to be conflicting opinions within the kindergarten about whether ABA is right for the child, something that was interpreted to reflect a conflict between the categorical and the relational perspectives of special education.
