    • Chemithermomechanical pulp has been treated by cold plasma of oxygen, nitrogen, argon or air. The wettability increases as a result of treatment by oxygen or air plasmas but decreases when argon or nitrogen plasmas are used. The initial water absorption rate can be improved by more than 100 % using an oxygen plasma. After subsequent ageing of the pulp the improvement was ca 200 %. Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) shows that the oxygen plasma treatment increases the oxygen content of the fibre surfaces due to oxidation and/or removal of fatty acids, resin acids, and probably also lignin. The amount of extractable material increases after the plasma treatment, probably due to oxidation and scission of the lignin and the carbohydrates. This oxidized low molecular weight material may act as a surfactant decreasing the surface tension of the absorbing liquid and thus enhance the absorption rate.

    • A surface modification technique using controlled hydrolysis and polymerization of Al-alkoxide is oresented. It was found by measuring the electrokinetic behaviour and the adsorption properties that a minimum amount of about 0.5 mg Al/m2 was necessary to give SiC and Si3N4 in cyclohexane using a commercial dispersant with an acidic headgroup.

    • The shift towards vehicle electrification must progress while simultaneously addressing sustainability challenges related to lightweighting, which is the intensifying need for high-quality primary aluminium, which demand cannot be met with recycled material with traditional compositional limits. To understand and predict the characteristics of future scrap mixtures, it is crucial to comprehend the evolving composition of new components and associated trends. This insight helps alloy design that accommodates higher impurities and, thus, a more thoughtful strategy for materials process development research. This review delves into the impact of electric motors, batteries, and functional integration. Notably, the analysis herein indicates a rise in magnesium (Mg) and a decrease in copper (Cu) and silicon (Si) contents in the future scrap mixtures due to more Al–Mg alloys such as those found in the 5xxx (Al–Mg) and 6xxx (Al–Mg–Si) series and an outflux of high Al–Si–Cu engine alloys. Gigacastings might counteract this trend based on their Si content and adoption and promote circularity principles by reducing alloy varieties. Reduced Si content in future scrap mixtures is also expected to boost sustainability since significant CO2 emissions from recycled alloys come from melting, controlled by the latent heat of fusion of the scrap mix.

    • A rapid and sensitive high-performance ion chromatography method for separation and quantitative determination of inositol mono- and diphosphate (IP 1-IP 2) isomers using pulsed amperometric detection is described. The method involves extraction of samples with HCl, separation of inositol phosphates from the crude extract by anion-exchange chromatography, NaAc gradient elution in an NaOH environment to perform isomer separation on a high-performance anion-exchange column, and detection with pulsed amperometric detector. The applicability and sensitivity of the method is illustrated by measurement of the content of IP 1 and IP 2 in foods, human ileal contents, and enzymatic hydrolysis products of phytate (inositol hexaphosphate). The major IP 1 and IP 2 isomers formed during phytate hydrolysis with wheat phytase were shown to be Ins(2)P, DL-Ins(1)P, and DL-Ins(1,2)P 2 and with Aspergillus niger phytase, Ins(2)P and DL-Ins(1,2)P 2.
