- In this article we set out to explore and discuss reasons for reading literary texts in university curricula of foreign languages. Our analysis is based on 2 sources of information: 16 syllabi of Spanish as a foreign language and a questionnaire in which 11 university instructors teaching these syllabi express their intentions. We point to a number of risks when emphasis is predominantly placed on instrumental goals such as acquisition of vocabulary and grammar or cultural knowledge. We suggest, instead, that the literary modules within language curricula should formulate their own specific goals. Rather than privileging linguistic and cultural competences to be trained, the literary modules could, for example, raise students' awareness of the facts that there are many ways of reading a text but that interpretation nevertheless remains a historically situated and constrained activity.

Art as a utopic horizon of feeling in La Anunciación

- In La Anunciación (2007) by María Negroni, a survivor of the Dirty War in Argentina narrates her quest to reconstitute herself as a subject, in exile, thirty years later. Thus, the novel inserts itself in the series of narratives about the memories of the last dictatorship in Argentina. However, at the same time, departing from referentiality, the novel creates obstacles for a mimetic reading. This paper argues that this is achieved through the discussion about art that mainly focuses on the character of Emma, the painter, and on the pictorial tradition of the Annunciation. Nonetheless, this departure from referentiality is by no means complete as the narrative keeps a dialectical relationship with history and memory. Accordingly, this article suggests that the novel puts forward a utopian idea of art that enters in dialogue with the utopian ideals of the revolutionary movements of the 1970s.

- The present article studies the role of education and science in the process of imagining the desired nation in the first two novels by César Duayen, namely, Stella (1905) and Mecha Iturbe (1906). To this end, the analysis focuses on the relations established between Education, Science and Nation as well as on the ways through which the narratives attribute themselves the authority to imagine the nation and realize this imagination in the diegetic world. Within this framework, the tension between the local and the global – or the national and the cosmopolitan – will play a central role, which is also discussed along the essay. Furthermore, it is argued that white as a colour as well as white bodies will be central elements for the conveyance of both the conflicts that the desired nation faces and the ideals that guide it.

RESUMEN || En La Anunciación (2007) de María Negroni una sobreviviente de la Guerra Sucia en Argentina narra su intento de volver a constituirse como sujeto en el exilio, treinta años más tarde. A través de esta temática, se inserta en la narrativa argentina de la memoria de la última dictadura. Al mismo tiempo, la novela, desvinculándose de lo referencial, obstaculiza una lectura mimética. El presente trabajo argumenta que esto se logra a través de la discusión sobre el arte, discusión que, principalmente, se nuclea alrededor del personaje de la pintora, Emma, y de la tradición pictórica de la Anunciación. Pero esta desvinculación de ninguna manera es total, sino que se mantiene en una relación dialéctica con la Historia y con la memoria. De ahí, planteamos que, a través esa misma discusión sobre el arte, la narrativa propone una idea utópica de este, que entra en diálogo con las utopías de los movimientos revolucionarios de la década de 1970

- Con el fin de entender cómo se articularon los textos literarios en un contexto ideológico de promoción y defensa de valores conservadores como la tradición, Andrea Castro aborda el estudio de El Católico Argentino (1874-1876), que describe como “una forma en transición entre canal de comunicación interna para miembros de la parroquia y publicación que se insertaba en la sociedad con el fin de regular la circulación y producción de discurso y de ideología católica intransigente y antiliberal”. Tras un minucioso recuento de los textos literarios publicados en el primer año de publicación de la revista, sus géneros y autores, Castro muestra que, a través de ellos, El Católico Argentino ofrecía una contemporaneidad conservadora que imaginaba el tiempo inmutable de una globalidad española y cristiana. A partir de dos textos particulares —el cuento “El Santo Reclamo”, de Fernán Caballero (Cecilia Böhl de Faber 1796-1877), y las redondillas de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695)—, Castro reflexiona acerca de los efectos que los mecanismos de reescritura y translación pudieron tener sobre los lectores argentinos y de cómo el periódico buscaba despertar el interés de un público que excedía el contexto parroquial, por ejemplo, las lectoras laicas. El trabajo propone que, de este modo, El Católico Argentino creó un espacio transnacional, haciendo a sus lectores parte de una globalidad católica alternativa a la cosmopolita, que ofrecía la modernidad, o a la del mercado, ofrecida por el liberalismo.

- In the novels Fuegia (1991) by Eduardo Belgrano Rawson and La tierra del fuego (1998) by Sylvia Iparraguirre, the indigenous inhabitants and the territory of Tierra del Fuego become representable through gazes and voices that (re)produce ethnical, linguistic and national borders that take root in the Nineteenth century. Following this, two kinds of erasure can be observed. On the one hand, by focalizing on the conflicts between the British and the Fuegians, the colonizing role of the Argentine State towards the territory and its inhabitants is made invisible. On the other hand, through a narration that avoids problematizing the use of the Spanish language for the writing of history, the indigenous people are made invisible as subjects. This allows us to propose that in the Argentinian literature of the end of the Twentieth Century some of the traits of the utopia of a monoglossic nation are still at work.
