  • När islam blev svenskt : föreställningar om islam och muslimer i svensk offentlig politik 1975-2010
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This dissertation aims to contribute to the study of the relationship between religion and politics and especially research about Islam and Muslims in Sweden. The thesis analyzes how Islam and Muslims are depicted in Swedish public policy debates between 1975–2010. The research questions are: How are Islam and Muslims described in Swedish public policy? Which questions and in what circumstances are Islam and Muslims described and discussed? How are Islam and Muslims represented in relation to Swedishness? Is collectivity assumed in the desciptions of Islam and Muslims, or is the variety of Muslims highlighted? The thesis also examines changes and continuity over time in the various discourses constructed about Islam and Muslims. The emperical material consists of major government documents, official government inquiries, parliamentary debates, bills, committee work, and proposals for parliamentary resolutions. The analysis draws upon a combination of discourse theory as formulated by Michel Foucault, including his thoughts on governmentality, and postcolonial theory as formulated by Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha and Stuart Hall, which emphasizes questions concerning representation, stereotypes, Orientalism and imitation. The thesis demonstrates shifts that have occurred in the discourses concerning Islam and Muslims in public policy debates. In the initial two periods of 1975–1980 and 1980-1990, Islam and Muslims were mostly related to questions concerning practical issues like education and religious slaughter. During the 1990s the shift included a focus on independent Islamic schools, immigration and a more explicit focus on problems related to Islam and Muslims in Swedish society. During the period between 2001–2010, there was another shift that included focus on questions concerning Islamism, islamophobia and anti-Semitism among muslims. In the final chapter four different discourses are identified that compete to define and explain Islam and Muslims. The first is a discourse on integration; the second concerns equality; the third focuses on security; and the fourth is a discourse on homogenization. In conclusion the dissertation highlights how the Swedish state and the political parties through various strategies have tried to administer, channel and construct an acceptable version of Islam that incorporates moderate values, is secularized and liberal.

  • Risk factors for exclusive breastfeeding lasting less than two months-Identifying women in need of targeted breastfeeding support
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE. - 1932-6203 .- 1932-6203. ; 12:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Breastfeeding rates in Sweden are declining, and it is important to identify women at risk for early cessation of exclusive breastfeeding. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding lasting less than two months postpartum. Methods: A population-based longitudinal study was conducted at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden. Six hundred and seventy-nine women were included in this sub-study. Questionnaires were sent at five days, six weeks and six months postpartum, including questions on breastfeeding initiation and duration as well as several other background variables. The main outcome measure was exclusive breastfeeding lasting less than two months postpartum. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used in order to calculate adjusted Odds Ratios (AOR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI).Results: Seventy-seven percent of the women reported exclusive breastfeeding at two months postpartum. The following variables in the multivariate regression analysis were independently associated with exclusive breastfeeding lasting less than two months postpartum: being a first time mother (AOR 2.15, 95% CI 1.32 +/- 3.49), reporting emotional distress during pregnancy (AOR 2.21, 95% CI 1.35 +/- 3.62) and giving birth by cesarean section (AOR 2.63, 95% CI 1.34 +/- 5.17).Conclusions: Factors associated with shorter exclusive breastfeeding duration were determined. Identification of women experiencing emotional distress during pregnancy, as well as scrutiny of caregiving routines on cesarean section need to be addressed, in order to give individual targeted breastfeeding support and promote longer breastfeeding duration.

  • Marine environment quality assessment of the Skagerrak - Kattegat
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sea Research. - 1385-1101. ; 35:1-3, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This quality assessment of the Skagerrak-Kattegat is mainly based on recent results obtained within the framework of the Swedish multidisciplinary research projekt ‘Large-scale environmental effects and ecological processes in the Skagerrak-Kattegat’ completed with relevant data from other research publications. The results show that the North Sea has a significant impact on the marine ecosystem in the Skagerrak and the northern Kattegat. Among environmental changes recently documented for some of these areas are: increased nutrient concentrations, increased occurrence of fast-growing filamentous algae in coastal areas affecting nursery and feeding conditions for fish, declining bottom water oxygen concentrations with negative effects on benthic fauna, and sediment toxicity to invertebrates also causing physiological responses in fish. It is concluded that, due to eutrophication and toxic substances, large-scale environmental changes and effects occur in the Skagerrak-Kattegat area.
