  • Experimental investigation on BOF slag oxidation in air
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ironmaking & steelmaking. - : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 0301-9233 .- 1743-2812. ; 46:8, s. 747-754
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag contains a significant amount of iron-containing species, which is considered to be iron resources and therefore need to be recovered. In this work, the oxidation behaviour of BOF slag under air (at selected oxidation temperatures and holding time) was investigated to explore the potential of transforming non-magnetic wustite in the BOF slag into magnetic spinel, which may subsequently be recovered by magnetic separation. The experimental results show that the iron-containing spices in the BOF slag can be oxidised into magnetic spinel phases in the investigated temperature range of 1000–1150°C and thereafter be recovered by magnetic separation. The formation of these phases is closely related to the oxidation temperatures and holding time: a higher oxidation temperature and longer holding time lead to a larger amount of formed magnetic species; however, the amount of formed magnetic species decreases at elevated temperature (>1050°C) and with extended holding time (>40 min).

  • Bridging the Terahertz Gap : Photonics-assisted Free-Space Communications from the Submillimeter-Wave to the Mid-Infrared
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 40:10, s. 3149-3162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since about one and half centuries ago, at the dawn of modern communications, the radio and the optics have been two separate electromagnetic spectrum regions to carry data. Differentiated by their generation/detection methods and propagation properties, the two paths have evolved almost independently until today. The optical technologies dominate the long-distance and high-speed terrestrial wireline communications through fiber-optic telecom systems, whereas the radio technologies have mainly dominated the short- to medium-range wireless scenarios. Now, these two separate counterparts are both facing a sign of saturation in their respective roadmap horizons, particularly in the segment of free-space communications. The optical technologies are extending into the mid-wave and long-wave infrared (MWIR and LWIR) regimes to achieve better propagation performance through the dynamic atmospheric channels. Radio technologies strive for higher frequencies like the millimeter-wave (MMW) and sub-terahertz (sub-THz) to gain broader bandwidth. The boundary between the two is becoming blurred and intercrossed. During the past few years, we witnessed technological breakthroughs in free-space transmission supporting very high data rates, many achieved with the assistance of photonics. This paper focuses on such photonics-assisted free-space communication technologies in both the lower and upper sides of the THz gap and provides a detailed review of recent research and development activities on some of the key enabling technologies. Our recent experimental demonstrations of high-speed free-space transmissions in both frequency regions are also presented as examples to show the system requirements for device characteristics and digital signal processing (DSP) performance.

  • Operation analysis of freeway mixed traffic flow based on catch-up coordination platoon
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Accident Analysis and Prevention. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0001-4575 .- 1879-2057. ; 175
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As one of the innovative technologies of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) have been deployed gradually. Given that there will be a long transition period before reaching a fully CAVs environment, it is crucial to assess the potential impacts of CAVs on mixed traffic flow. Considering platoon formation process, this study develops a platoon cooperation strategy based on “catch-up” mechanism, and then analyzes the impact on fundamental diagram, traffic oscillation, and traffic safety within mixed traffic. Simulation results show that with an increasing market penetration rate (MPR) of CAVs, road capacity shows an increasing trend. Compared with base scenario, a clear increase in road capacity is also observed under platoon scenario. With an increasing MPR, traffic oscillation is shown to reduce largely. Furthermore, the proposed platoon strategy could dampen frequent shockwaves and shorten the propagation range of waves. Regarding traffic safety, multiple surrogate safety measures (SSMs) are used to evaluate the traffic risk: including Criticality Index Function (CIF), Potential Index for Collision with Urgent Deceleration (PICUD), and Deceleration Rate to Avoid a Crash (DRAC). With increasing MPR, collision risk identified by CIF and DRAC shows an increase tendency, while that identified by PICUD has no apparent trend. Furthermore, the platoon strategy is shown to increase the severity of traffic conflicts significantly. Overall, this study provides novel insights into CAVs deployment through the analysis of platoon strategy.

  • Hybrid fiber–THz fronthaul supporting up to 16384-QAM-OFDM with the delta-sigma modulation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Optics Letters. - : Optica Publishing Group (formerly OSA). - 0146-9592 .- 1539-4794. ; 47:17, s. 4307-4310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the progress of high-capacity radio access networks, ultra-dense small cells are rapidly being deployed in urban areas. As a result, the deployment of a large number of optical fibers in urban areas becomes a severe issue. In this Letter, we propose a hybrid fiber–terahertz (THz) mobile fronthaul system supporting flexible and high-order wireless signal transmission with the delta-sigma modulation. The photonic THz transmission is used as the seamless extension of fiber-based fronthaul in small cells. A 20-Gbit/s digital fiber–THz fronthaul system is experimentally demonstrated to validate the proposed scheme, with 10-km optical fiber transmission and 300-GHz wireless relay. Carrier aggregation of up to 10 40-MHz and 60-MHz 5G-new radio (5G-NR) channels at the radio carrier frequency of 3.9 GHz is reported. The design of quantization noise suppressed delta-sigma modulation enables the system to transmit orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation up to 16384 order quadrate amplitude modulation (QAM) mapping with the error vector magnitude (EVM) below 0.5%.

  • CFD simulation of soot generation during biomass gasification in a cyclone gasifier
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Fuel. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0016-2361 .- 1873-7153. ; 364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soot generation is a challenging issue in high-temperature biomass gasification, which reduces the biomass conversion rate and leads to contamination of the reactor. To provide new means and insights to optimize gasification processes, the soot generation during biomass gasification in a cyclone reactor is studied here by establishing a novel biomass gasification and soot formation model to improve the accuracy attainable in numerical predictions of spatio-temporal soot evolution. The new method is validated by comparing it with gasification experiments in two reactor configurations. A good performance in capturing the overall soot generation and light gas yield of the current model is obtained in the simulations of an entrained flow reactor compared with experimental data. Besides, the biomass gasification behavior in this entrained flow reactor is systematically studied by reviewing the tar, precursor, and soot mass fraction evolution in the reactor under different steam/carbon ratios, gasification temperatures, and air excess ratios with the new model. Furthermore, the influence of varying air equivalence ratios, the operation temperature and the fuel moisture on the soot generation in a cyclone gasifier, as well as the ability of the proposed model to reflect such influences, are also discussed. Numerical simulations demonstrate the existence of an optimal operation condition for the cyclone gasifier in terms of the soot generation. The current work thus provides a useful tool for analyzing the mechanism of soot formation at the reactor scale.
