  • A strategic canvas for degrowth: In dialogue with Erik Olin Wright
  • 2022
  • In: Degrowth & Strategy : How to bring about social-ecological transformation - How to bring about social-ecological transformation. - 9781906948603 - 9781906948610 ; , s. 56-71
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter articulates a strategic canvas for degrowth, based on a dialogue with the work of Erik Olin Wright. It argues that degrowth strategies for social- ecological transformation need to combine several strategic approaches, reflecting the plurality of degrowth as a movement. To support the myriad of bottom-up alternatives that are already out there, degrowth actors should put a special emphasis on strategies that build power outside of the capitalist system and be very cautious of those which merely seek to tame capitalism. At the same time, the degrowth movement should also integrate the strategic logic of overthrowing capitalism altogether. Concrete initiatives would benefit from being more focused when strategising, whilst critically reflecting on the choices made.

  • Strategy for the multiplicity of degrowth
  • 2022
  • In: Degrowth & Strategy : How to bring about social-ecological transformation - How to bring about social-ecological transformation. - 9781906948603 - 9781906948610 - 9781906948627 ; , s. 9-34
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter starts with outlining a degrowth vision for social-ecological transformation. It then traces the existing discussion on strategy in the degrowth movement and explains why it is important to think about strategy. Its key contribution is a conceptualiation strategy, which builds on and is closely aligned with our understanding of degrowth. Finally, it introduces the book and its structure, followed by a conclusion.

  • Alternatives to mainstream publishing within and beyond academia
  • 2021
  • In: Ephemera: Theory and Politics in Organization. - 1473-2866. ; 21:4, s. 117-142
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • For the 20-year anniversary of ephemera journal, we have invited eight collectives engaged in alternatives to mainstream publishing to tell us about the initiatives they are part of. The task of ephemera, in turn, has been to bring them together. In this forum the collectives introduce what they do, articulating their political commitments and organising principles, whilst not shying away from the challenges and limitations of their work. Together, they illuminate the politics and organisation of alternatives to mainstream publishing, giving a rich picture of what alternatives can look like. They also help us rethink what it means to be open (access).

  • Assembling a Zero-Waste World : From situated to distributed prefiguration
  • In: Organization Studies. - 1741-3044.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The concept of prefiguration is drawing increasing interest as a lens to study the collective dynamic and transformative potential of alternative organizing. We introduce an analytical distinction between two modes of prefiguration. Situated prefiguration emphasizes affective bonds and direct struggle taking place in bounded organizational spaces, while distributed prefiguration manifests in wider socio-spatial formations. While situated prefiguration has been studied substantially, distributed prefiguration has so far not been adequately theorized. To conceptualize more spatially dispersed forms of prefiguration, we approach prefiguration from a relational perspective, drawing especially on assemblage thinking, which reveals a different way of thinking about how prefigurative practices are spatially organized. We demonstrate different socio-spatial forms of prefiguration in action through an empirical investigation of the zero-waste phenomenon. Our empirical material is built on site visits to zero-waste stores, interviews with zero-wasters and conventional retailers and online sources related to zero-waste. We find that zero-waste stores transcend situated prefiguration by being part of a zero-waste assemblage that aims to radically transform the food and retail system through distributed prefiguration.

  • Countering corporate violence: Degrowth, ecosocialism and organising beyond the destructive forces of capitalism
  • 2021
  • In: Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-7323 .- 1350-5084. ; 28:3, s. 405-425
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Corporate violence is a form of organised violence motivated or caused by material interest, profit-seeking or economic expansion. It is inflicted on human beings or ecosystems. Complementing a Marxist theoretical frame with literature on ecosocialism and degrowth, we examine how corporate violence is inherent to and has been consistently encouraged by the capitalist mode of production. By drawing on the concepts of primitive accumulation and social metabolism, we visibilise how such violence is manifested within the productive forces of capitalism – natural resources, labour, technology and money. Corporate violence, we argue, may only be countered in a post-capitalist society where the productive forces are radically transformed. We build on degrowth principles to articulate how corporate violence may be countered and how post-growth organising of productive forces may look.

  • Degrowth
  • 2022
  • In: Handbook of Critical Environmental Politics. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781839100666 - 9781839100673 ; , s. 116-128
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter is devoted to introducing degrowth to anyone interested in environmental politics and making connections between the two areas. It articulates critiques of growth, alternatives associated with degrowth and the politics of pursuing them. It is argued that economic growth, with GDP being its key indicator, comes with environmental degradation and is rooted in injustices. Degrowth scholarship and activism, in turn, offer a vision for systemic change beyond capitalism and growth. Degrowth is an umbrella term that signifies an absolute reduction of biophysical throughput and a socio-material reorganisation of economies and societies. While there are many existing alternatives that relate to degrowth, they remain rather marginal. This makes the question of politics key to address. This chapter discusses the role of direct democracy and bottom-up organising in degrowth politics, the potential and challenges of engaging with the state, and reflects on how to foster the transformative potential of degrowth.
