- Experimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alternatives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote laboratories and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online laboratories. Similarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote laboratories require some effort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration several factors that affect their adoption (i.e., cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e., benefit). This chapter analyzes these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large number of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an example in the area of electrical and electronics engineering, based on a remote laboratory named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.

- This chapter discusses approaches to do foresights in outdoor recreation and tourism in nature, based on research from the Nordic countries. This region has a long-standing reputation for promoting outdoor recreation, with associated policies aiming to support this tradition for the benefit of future generations and environmental engagement. To do so successfully, one key input is improving the knowledge of outdoor recreational participation, associated trends, and future development. In this chapter, we therefore review different monitoring approaches to trend analyses as a means of forecasting participation and discuss supplementary approaches to foresight in outdoor recreation. We operationalize the Nordic context through studies undertaken in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Our examination shows that the tradition of national surveys and on-site visitor monitoring has proven effective. However, contemporary changes in society call for additional approaches to better understand future outdoor recreation. We therefore share experiences from several different approaches to foresight in outdoor recreation. This will inform future research as well as managers, entrepreneurs, planners and policymakers in their decision-making.

- The purpose of this chapter is to contribute knowledge about school-related and workplace-related conditions that enable students’ vocational learning during workplace-based learning within vocational education. The research underpinning the chapter draws on evidence from a research project on students’ vocational learning in the industrial vocational education program at six different Swedish upper secondary schools. The theoretical concept of recontextualization contributes to uncovering the dynamic conditions that enable students’ vocational learning as they bring knowledge from the school context to the workplace context and back in vocational education programs. The argument is that both school- and workplace-related conditions must support putting knowledge to work in the workplace context. The ways in which different types of knowledge are put to use form the basis for examining how school-related and work-related conditions can support students in their vocational learning. The students’ ways of making sense of workplace-based learning as an extension of their educational program and of putting knowledge to work in the workplace are connected with their identity formation processes. Students use different learning strategies to bridge school-based and workplace-based knowledge that support changes in the workplace. The implications of this study are discussed in terms of potential changes in practices for vocational learning in the context of vocational education.

- Seasonal variation is a strong cue directing the growth and development of plants. It is particularly important for perennials growing in temperate and boreal regions where woody plants must become dormant to survive freezing winter temperatures. Shortening of the photoperiod induces growth cessation, bud set and a first degree of cold acclimation in most woody plants. The subsequent drop in temperature then produces a greater tolerance to cold and, in deciduous trees, leaf senescence and fall. Trees must time their periods of dormancy accurately with their environment. Circadian clocks underlie this ability, allowing organisms to predict regular, daily changes in their environment as well as longer term seasonal changes. This chapter provides an update on the plant clock in a model annual, thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana), and further summarizes recent advances about the clock in perennial plants and its involvement in their annual growth cycles, which allows trees to withstand cold and freezing temperatures. Moreover, we outline our views on areas where future work on the circadian clock is necessary to gain insight into the life of a tree.

- The cause of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic disorder characterized by abdominal pain and disturbed bowel habits, is largely unknown. It is believed to be related to physical properties in the gut, central mechanisms in the brain, psychological factors, or a combination of these. To understand the relationships within the gut-brain axis with respect to IBS, large numbers of measurements ranging from stool samples to functional magnetic resonance imaging are collected from patients with IBS and healthy controls. As such, IBS is a typical example in medical research where research turns into a big data analysis challenge. In this chapter we demonstrate the power of interactive visual data analysis and exploration to generate an environment for scientific reasoning and hypothesis formulation for data from multiple sources with different character. Three case studies are presented to show the utility of the presented work.
