  • International multidisciplinary collaboration toward an annotated definition of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Medical Genetics Part C-Seminars in Medical Genetics. - : Wiley. - 1552-4868 .- 1552-4876. ; 181:3, s. 288-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) has been described and defined in thousands of articles, but the terminology used has been inconsistent in clinical and research communities. A definition of AMC was recently developed using a modified Delphi consensus method involving 25 experts in the field of AMC from 8 countries. Participants included health care professionals, researchers, and individuals with AMC. An annotation of the definition provides more in-depth explanations of the different sentences of the AMC definition and is useful to complement the proposed definition. The aim of this study was to provide an annotation of the proposed consensus-based AMC definition. For the annotation process, 17 experts in AMC representing 10 disciplines across 7 countries participated. A paragraph was developed for each sentence of the definition using an iterative process involving multiple authors with varied and complementary expertise, ensuring all points of view were taken into consideration. The annotated definition provides an overview of the different topics related to AMC and is intended for all stakeholders, including youth and adults with AMC, their families, and clinicians and researchers, with the hopes of unifying the understanding of AMC in the international community.

  • Understanding the gastrointestinal physiology and responses to feeding in air-breathing Anabantiform fishes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fish Biology. - : Wiley. - 0022-1112 .- 1095-8649. ; 96:4, s. 986-1003
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Mekong Delta is host to a large number of freshwater species, including a unique group of facultative air-breathing Anabantiforms. Of these, the striped snakehead (Channa striata), the climbing perch (Anabas testudineus), the giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy) and the snakeskin gourami (Trichogaster pectoralis) are major contributors to aquaculture production in Vietnam. The gastrointestinal responses to feeding in these four species are detailed here. Relative intestinal length was lowest in the snakehead, indicating carnivory, and 5.5-fold greater in the snakeskin, indicating herbivory; climbing perch and giant gourami were intermediate, indicating omnivory. N-waste excretion (ammonia-N + urea-N) was greatest in the carnivorous snakehead and least in the herbivorous snakeskin, whereas the opposite trend was observed for net K+ excretion. Similarly, the more carnivorous species had a greater stomach acidity than the more herbivorous species. Measurements of acid-base flux to water indicated that the greatest postprandial alkaline tide occurred in the snakehead and a potential acidic tide in the snakeskin. Additional findings of interest were high levels of both PCO2 (up to 40 mmHg) and HCO3- (up to 33 mM) in the intestinal chyme of all four of these air-breathing species. Using in vitro gut sac preparations of the climbing perch, it was shown that the intestinal net absorption of fluid, Na+ and HCO3- was upregulated by feeding but not net Cl- uptake, glucose uptake or K+ secretion. Upregulated net absorption of HCO3- suggests that the high chyme (HCO3-) does not result from secretion by the intestinal epithelium. The possibility of ventilatory control of PCO2 to regulate postprandial acid-base balance in these air-breathing fish is discussed.

  • ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Herpesviridae 2021
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of General Virology. - : Microbiology Society. - 0022-1317 .- 1465-2099. ; 102:10
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Members of the family Herpesviridae have enveloped, spherical virions with characteristic complex structures consisting of symmetrical and non-symmetrical components. The linear, double-stranded DNA genomes of 125-241 kbp contain 70-170 genes, of which 43 have been inherited from an ancestral herpesvirus. In general, herpesviruses have coevolved with and are highly adapted to their hosts, which comprise many mammalian, avian and reptilian species. Following primary infection, they are able to establish lifelong latent infection, during which there is limited viral gene expression. Severe disease is usually observed only in the foetus, the very young, the immunocompromised or following infection of an alternative host. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) Report on the family Herpesviridae, which is available at ictv.global/report/herpesviridae.

  • Accuracy and precision of direct bone conduction measurements.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: B-ENT. - 1781-782X. ; 12:1, s. 41-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Variability in Baha® sound processor fittings arise from several sources including the nature of the implant-to-bone transmission and transcranial attenuation in patients with single-sided sensorineural deafness. One method of improving the predictability of Baha fittings is to measure the individual patient's actual bone conduction thresholds via the implant, thereby removing the influence of skin thickness and/or implant location site. One hundred thirty eight adult wearers of the Baha System participated in the study. Direct bone conduction thresholds were obtained through the BC Direct feature of the Cochlear™ Baha Fitting Software combined with the CochlearBaha BP100 sound processor. Test-retest reliability measurement was performed in 58 participants.Improved transmission of sound through the implant rather than transcutaneously through the skin was confirmed. On average, the BC Direct thresholds were closer to the patient's unmasked thresholds than the masked values. In patients with single-sided sensorineural deafness, BC Direct results were elevated compared to the contralateral bone conduction thresholds due to transcranial attenuation. The test-retest reliability for the BC Direct measurements was within ±5 dB, which is in within the accepted variability for audiometric test measurements.Direct bone conduction measurement provides a validated method of comparing the transcutaneous thresholds as measured through audiometry with the percutaneous responses from the Baha sound processor. The Baha fitting based on direct measurements of bone conduction may require less fine-tuning and provide a greater understanding of the variability of the bone conduction sound pathway.
