  • Barriers Broken. Production Relations and Agrarian Change in South India
  • 1990
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book studies agrarian change and the factors which have the potential to control and direct the course of such change. Hence it deals with a fundamental issue which has a direct bearing on poverty. Based on a survey of 367 agrarian households in South India, this book systematically compares two major ecotypes in Indian agriculture: rainfed cultivation and irrigated agriculture. The authors link this ecological analysis to class relations, technology, and patterns of agriarian change, especially after the Green Revolution. They then go on to compare land and labour relations, class structures, credit and usurious relations, and agricultural productivity in these two ecotypes.

  • Mera mat: Att brödföda en växande befolkning
  • 2001

  • Models for Non-Modelers : Understanding the Use of Models for Social Scientists and Others
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Models for Non-Modelers focuses not on how to design models but on how to understand and critically appraise them. Data and statistical models are widely used in disciplines such as epidemiology, climate science and systems design, but it can be difficult for those without the necessary training to understand and implement them. This book is for non-modelers, especially social scientists. Through extensive examination of some common models both in visual and text form, this book shows these non-modellers how to understand the problems, both in the logic and implementation of such models. It includes in-depth worked examples and boxed text for more technical aspects. It does not require the reader to have in-depth mathematical knowledge. Also working through some common models in epidemiology and climate change scholarship, it examines AI and the problem of causality. This book will be suitable for graduate students and researchers in the social sciences who would like to learn more about how to assess models and the steps they need to take to apply them in their own research, as well as for those taking first courses in quantitative methods and statistical analysis for research data analysis.

  • Structural transformation and agrarian change in India
  • 2016
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The landlord and his emaciated labourer are symbolic of Indian agriculture. However, this relationship is less assured as large landowners have fallen from their superior position. This volume explores how this emblematic pair is becoming a thing of the past. Structural Transformation and Agrarian Change in India investigates whether family labour farms are gaining prominence as a consequence of the structural trans formation of the economy. The authors work alongside Weberian method - ology of ideal types and develop different types of family farms; among them family labour farms that rely mainly on family workers, contrasted with capitalist farms that depend on hired labour. Agriculture is shrinking as a part of the total GDP at the same time as agricultural labour is shrinking as part of the total labour force. The changing agrarian structure is explored with the use of unique longterm survey data and statistical models. Results show that India is approaching farm structures that are typical of East and South East Asia, with pluriactive smallholders as the norm. This book successfully criticizes popular narratives about Indian agricultural development as well as simplistic evolutionist, Marxist or neoclassical prognoses. It is of great importance to those who study development economics, development studies and South Asian economics.
