  • Advancing knowledge about governance, sponsorship and talent development in sports. Best papers from the “Managing Sport” tracks at the EURAM Annual Meeting in Valencia 2014
  • 2015
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • For the academic programme at the EURAM 2014 conference we have been able to maintain a constant stream of high quality full-paper submissions, leading to about 30 papers presented in Valencia. We are grateful to Emerald Group Publishing for continuing the strong bonds between Sport, Business and Management and the Managing Sport-SIG also by sponsoring an annual best paper award and a best reviewer award. The best paper award in Valencia was presented to Margaret Johnston and Luc Bourgeois (University of Queensland, Australia) for their paper entitled “Third-Person Perceptions of Gambling Sponsorship Advertising”. The best reviewer award was presented to Dimitrios Kolyperas (University of Stirling, UK). The Award Committee included Emilie Malcourant (as 2013 best reviewer), Mathieu Winand (as the SIG’s Programme Chair) and James Santomier (as SIG Treasurer). We wish to thank them and all the reviewers of the track for their excellent work. In addition to the award winning paper by Margaret Johnston and Luc Bourgeois we selected the following four articles for this special issue aiming to advance our knowledge about governance, sponsorship and talent development in sports. These are Brian Minikin (University of Stirling, UK) on “Legitimacy and democracy: implications for governance in sport”; Emilie Malcourant, Alain Vas and Thierry Zintz (all Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium) on “World Anti-Doping Agency: a meta-organizational perspective”; Sten Söderman (Stockholm University, Sweden) and Harald Dolles (Molde University College, Norway & University of Gothenburg, Centre for International Businesses Studies, Sweden) on “Unlocking advertising, activation and sponsorship in an emerging market: the case of Beijing Olympics”; and “Talent development in football: Are young talents given time to blossom?” by Stig Arve Sæther (Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway) and Harry Arne Solberg (Sør-Trøndelag University College, Trondheim Business School, Norway). All articles have been at least double-blind reviewed to be accepted for presentation at the EURAM 2014 conference and revised afterwards in exchange with the reviewers assigned to each submission.

  • Exploring Factors that Influence Event Sponsorship
  • 2011
  • In: Management Culture in the 21st Century. Proceedings of the European Academy of Management 11th Annual Meeting. - 9789985982471
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article contributes to sponsorship research as well as to event management theory and practice by systematically examining a number of factors that influence grant and sponsorship revenue for events (festivals). Data from 260 festival managers in Australia, Norway, Sweden and UK are compared with respect to their events’ revenue sources, ownership and other factors thought to influence revenue. Statistical tests reveal that event size (i.e., attendance), professionalism (as measured by staff numbers) and the "fit" between event and sponsor (as measured by type of event correlated with sponsor type and grant sources) significantly affect event revenue, and a number of practical management implications are discussed. Future research needs and theory development are discussed in the conclusions, focused on a new set of propositions derived from the analysis.

  • Factors Influencing Grant and Sponsorship Revenue for Festivals
  • 2013
  • In: Event Management. - 1525-9951. ; 17:3, s. 195-212
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article contributes to event management theory and practice, and more generally to sponsorship research, by examining grant and sponsorship revenue for festivals. In particular, a number of factors that appear to influence the amounts and sources of external revenues are examined for significant differences. Data obtained from 260 festival managers in Australia, Norway, Sweden, and UK are compared with respect to their events’ revenue sources, ownership, and other factors thought to influence revenue. Statistical tests reveal that festival size (i.e., attendance), professionalism (as measured by staff members), and the “fit” between event and sponsor (as measured by type of event correlated with different sponsors and grant sources) significantly affect festival revenue. It is argued in the conclusion that by applying certain strategies festival managers can enhance their external revenue generation and support. Future research needs and theory development are discussed in the conclusions, focused on a new set of propositions derived from the analysis.

  • Exploring Thick Description in Business System Analysis: The Korean Business System from a European Corporate Perception
  • 2011
  • In: Proceedings of the 28th Annual Conference Euro-Asia Management Studies Association (Theme: “The Changing Competitive Landscape in Euro-Asian Business”). ; 28
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In recent years, Korea has achieved considerable economic growth accompanied by potential business opportunities for international companies. The European Union is currently negotiating a free trade agreement aiming at increased trade and business relations. Hence, the Korean business system and its foundations in societal characteristics need to be taken into account by European political and economic actors. The purpose of this study is to identify those characteristics and to explore their linkages as perceived by European companies. This inductive research is based on the socio-economic approach of business systems theories. For this, ten qualitative interviews have been conducted with European companies doing business in Korea across different industries. Empirical findings resulted in a comprehensive image of the Korean business system enriched by a European corporate assessment. It can be concluded that for a successful existence in the Korean market European companies have to consider governmental dominance in business structures, the importance of business network relations as well as implications of strong cultural characteristics.

  • A strategic approach to develop and maintain sponsorship income for events
  • 2013
  • In: Innovation and value creation in experience-based tourism: Proceedings of the 22nd Nordic Symposium in Tourism and Hospitality Research.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The financing and revenue structure of events (festivals) has received comparatively less attention in research compared to the importance to secure financing for successful sustainable event management. Existing research reveals that differences in revenue sources and sponsorship (public or corporate) income exist in regards to event ownership or various cultural and social reasons. This research aims to contribute to sponsorship research as well as to event management theory and practice by discussing specific actions that event managers can take to increase the event value to grant-giving institutions and to sponsoring corporations.

  • Addressing Ecology and Sustainability in Mega-sporting Events : The 2006 Football World Cup in Germany
  • 2010
  • In: Journal of Management and Organization. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 1833-3672 .- 1839-3527. ; 16:4, s. 587-600
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • For the first time in the history of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), the football (soccer) World Cup held in Germany 2006 specifically addressed environmental concerns. By doing so, the German Organizing Committee did not have the objective of creating a short-term vision, but rather of making a long-term and lasting contribution to the improvement of environmental protection in hosting a mega-sporting event. By taking the football world cup in Germany as a case study, we will provide insights into the so-called 'Green Goal' programme and its four main areas: water, waste, energy, and transportation. From a global point of view, climate protection was added by the Organizing Committee as the fifth area of action and was recognised as a cross-sectorial task. Finally, questions are addressed on how to apply those measurements in the planning and organisation of other mega (-sporting) events.
