  • Identifying commoners in the Bronze Age: burials outside barrows
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: New Perspectives on the Bronze Age: Proceedings from the 13th Nordic Bronze Age Symposium, held in Gothenburg 9th June to 13th June 2015. - Oxford : Archaeopress. - 9781784915988 ; , s. 37-64
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article discusses the possibility of social division and the presence of commoners in south Scandinavia during the Early Bronze Age. The discussion is based on new scientific and archaeological data generated in the project Travels, transmissions and transformations in temperate northern Europe during the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC: The rise of Bronze Age societies. Based on a comprehensive radiocarbon dating program, we were able to re-assign many skeletons, previously assumed to be Late Neolithic, to the Bronze Age. This accounted for a significant proportion of non-elite burials (including those of children) that had previously been ‘mysteriously’ missing in the archaeological Bronze Age record. Moreover, strontium isotope analyses reveal that individuals seem to be mobile regardless of their wealth status and burial rituals. It suggests a society where workers and perhaps even nonfree labourers were mobile, not only the elite segment.

  • Aging, DNA damage, and reproductive outcome
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Paternal Influences on Human Reproductive Success. - 9781107024489 - 9781139169349 ; , s. 82-92
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to increasing life expectancy and a number of social factors, at least in the Western world, an increasing proportion of men who are considered to belong to an “older age group” have the wish of becoming fathers. One of the reasons is that many women postpone their first pregnancy, which automatically leads to higher age of the potential fathers. Furthermore, divorce and building new families has become more frequent, which also affects the paternal age. For those reasons, from a social and a medical point of view, the issue of age-dependent changes in reproductive capacity of the males is receiving increasing attention. Aging might not only lead to reduced fertility but also to an increase in the occurrence of sperm DNA defects, which potentially might be transmitted to the offspring. Understanding the mechanisms linking paternal age to reproductive outcome is, therefore, crucial not only for understanding this process, but first of all in order to prevent possible negative impact of male aging on fertility and health of the offspring. In this chapter we will focus on the available information regarding age and numerical or structural changes in the DNA. The issue of epigenetic effects will be covered in a separate chapter.

  • Transferring biodiversity-ecosystem function research to the management of 'real-world' ecosystems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Mechanisms underlying the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function. - London : Elsevier. - 9780081029121 - 9780081029138 ; , s. 323-356
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) research grew rapidly following concerns that biodiversity loss would negatively affect ecosystem functions and the ecosystem services they underpin. However, despite evidence that biodiversity strongly affects ecosystem functioning, the influence of BEF research upon policy and the management of 'real-world' ecosystems, i.e., semi-natural habitats and agroecosystems, has been limited. Here, we address this issue by classifying BEF research into three clusters based on the degree of human control over species composition and the spatial scale, in terms of grain, of the study, and discussing how the research of each cluster is best suited to inform particular fields of ecosystem management. Research in the first cluster, small-grain highly controlled studies, is best able to provide general insights into mechanisms and to inform the management of species-poor and highly managed systems such as croplands, plantations, and the restoration of heavily degraded ecosystems. Research from the second cluster, small-grain observational studies, and species removal and addition studies, may allow for direct predictions of the impacts of species loss in specific semi-natural ecosystems. Research in the third cluster, large-grain uncontrolled studies, may best inform landscape-scale management and national-scale policy. We discuss barriers to transfer within each cluster and suggest how new research and knowledge exchange mechanisms may overcome these challenges. To meet the potential for BEF research to address global challenges, we recommend transdisciplinary research that goes beyond these current clusters and considers the social-ecological context of the ecosystems in which BEF knowledge is generated. This requires recognizing the social and economic value of biodiversity for ecosystem services at scales, and in units, that matter to land managers and policy makers.
