- The Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, were occupied no less than three times during the Second World War. Faced with a reign of terror, the threat of deportation, and compulsory conscription, over 30,000 people fled over the Baltic Sea to Sweden. On their arrival in Sweden, most escape boats were confiscated by the authorities and in 1945 were returned to the Soviet Union.This study, which began as an attempt to find out about the Baltic escape boats that ended up in Sweden, is inspired by a foreign boat in a small fishing harbour on the island of Gotland. My curiosity was piqued when I caught sight of the boat and heard that it had probably been an escape boat.The purpose of this thesis is to establish which, if any, Baltic escape boats survive in Sweden, in which contexts they remain, and to review their state of preservation, as well as to answer the question of their significance for the memory of the escape. It is an archaeology of the escape and its aftermath, based on the surviving escape boats – what the boats say about the escape, what happened to them afterwards, and how people relate to them and their historical legacy today.The study looks at 35 boats that have been described as Baltic escape boats in various contexts. It shows that they are found in a multitude of environments and in a range of different states of preservation. The boats illustrate experiences that few other source materials can convey, in a manner pertinent to the archaeological understanding of flight. In addition, the boats are rare traces of an earlier Estonian coastal culture eradicated by the second Soviet occupation.One of the most important outcomes of the study is the documentation from the survey and examinations carried out. Few of the boats were known outside their local context. A national compilation has been lacking, which has impeded research and ultimately our understanding of the breadth and complexity of the Swedish historical landscape when it comes to ship remains.

- In the digitalization continuum of art and artefacts, the questions how and through which mediations artistic material ought to be presented are vital ones. This debate is here discussed with two such initiatives, namely the pan-Nordic museum portal DigitaltMuseum and the avant-garde repository UbuWeb. The initiatives are explained in an information scientific context, followed by a discussion of the repositories’ knowledge organization and user perspectives. Technological as well as juridical issues are thereafter brought up in order to illuminate the presentational differences between DigitaltMuseum and UbuWeb respectively. The arts council-funded DigitaltMuseum is viewed as a publication tool for Norwegian and Swedish museums to bring out various artefacts into the public web-sphere. UbuWeb is in turn defined as a rhizomatic guerilla-initiative for ensuring the digital prolonging for avant-garde material. The two repositories are in different ways concluded as significant platforms for the web-based display of digitized artistic objects and concepts.

- Emanating in a Swedish and British context, this article discusses four contemporary tendencies in the two countries’ open access networks. An analysis of research funders’ policy documents is done through actor-networktheory. The study finds that while Swedish council Vetenskapsrådet is defined as a ”spider in the web” of the research funder network, the British network is more fragmentary. As for Bioscientific networks, the Swedish network is of a more peripheral sort while the British consists of sprawling nodes. Within Health Science, both countries have ties to infrastructures for data deposition. Deposition of monographs are central in networks regarding Social Science and the Humanities. It is proposed that funders, libraries and other professionals active within the open access movements considers these tendencies in the forming of activities and mandates. It is also emphasized that further studies are needed to map open access-networks.

Music structure determines heart rate variability of singers

- Choir singing is known to promote wellbeing. One reason for this may be that singing demands a slower than normal respiration, which may in turn affect heart activity. Coupling of heart rate variability (HRV) to respiration is called Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). This coupling has a subjective as well as a biologically soothing effect, and it is beneficial for cardiovascular function. RSA is seen to be more marked during slow-paced breathing and at lower respiration rates (0.1 Hz and below). In this study, we investigate how singing, which is a form of guided breathing, affects HRV and RSA. The study comprises a group of healthy 18 year olds of mixed gender. The subjects are asked to; (1) hum a single tone and breathe whenever they need to; (2) sing a hymn with free, unguided breathing; and (3) sing a slow mantra and breathe solely between phrases. Heart rate (HR) is measured continuously during the study. The study design makes it possible to compare above three levels of song structure. In a separate case study, we examine five individuals performing singing tasks (1–3). We collect data with more advanced equipment, simultaneously recording HR, respiration, skin conductance and finger temperature. We show how song structure, respiration and HR are connected. Unison singing of regular song structures makes the hearts of the singers accelerate and decelerate simultaneously. Implications concerning the effect on wellbeing and health are discussed as well as the question how this inner entrainment may affect perception and behavior.
