  • Energy redistribution during CO2 laser cladding
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Congress proceedings. - Orlando, Fla : Laser institute of America. - 912035730 ; , s. 549-558
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the factors that effect the efficiency of the CO sub 2 -laser powder cladding process. By theoretical calculation and experimental work it has been possible to identify how much of the original laser energy contributes to the cladding process and how much is lost to the surrounding environment by reflection, radiation, convection etc. Every aspect of energy redistribution has been analysed and quantified and this has lead to a deeper understanding of the process. The paper concludes with a number of suggestions for improving the efficiency of blown powder laser cladding

  • Connecting the resource nexus to basic urban service provision – with a focus on water-energy interactions in New York City
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sustainable cities and society. - : Elsevier. - 2210-6707. ; 31, s. 83-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Urban water and energy systems are crucial for sustainably meeting basic service demands in cities. This paper proposes and applies a technology-independent “reference resource-to-service system” framework for concurrent evaluation of urban water and energy system interventions and their ‘nexus’ or ‘interlinkages’. In a concrete application, data that approximate New York City conditions are used to evaluate a limited set of interventions in the residential sector, spanning from low-flow toilet shifts to extensive green roof installations. Results indicate that interventions motivated primarily by water management goals can considerably reduce energy use and contribute to mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Similarly, energy efficiency interventions can considerably reduce water use in addition to lowering emissions. However, interventions yielding the greatest reductions in energy use and emissions are not necessarily the most water conserving ones, and vice versa. Useful further research, expanding the present analysis should consider a broader set of resource interactions, towards a full climate, land, energy and water (CLEW) nexus approach. Overall, assessing the impacts, trade-offs and co-benefits from interventions in one urban resource system on others also holds promise as support for increased resource efficiency through integrated decision making.

  • Barriers to Implementation of Laser Welding Technology – A Study of 11 Companies in Scandinavia
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Manufacturing Science and Technology. - : Horizon Research Publishing Co., Ltd.. - 2333-2735 .- 2333-2697. ; 3:2, s. 48-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the manufacturing industry, one essential contribution to sustain high competitiveness is successful regular implementation of advanced manufacturing technology. Barriers of different sorts could interfere with this implementation. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there are barriers to implementation of laser welding technology and how they affect the implementation process. Eleven small manufacturing companies, mainly in northern Sweden and Finland, are interviewed regarding their experiences with implementation of laser welding technology. What is clear is that this is a more complex question than just lack of money. The study shows other underlying barriers to have more influence on the lack of implementation. Many of the barriers are connected with organization and management. Identifying these barriers and when they occur in the implementation process may improve implementation efficiency.

  • Cross-Scale Water and Land Impacts of Local Climate and Energy PolicyA Local Swedish Analysis of Selected SDG Interactions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 11:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyses how local energy and climate actions can affect the use of water and land resources locally, nationally and globally. Each of these resource systems is linked to different Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); we also explore related SDG interactions. A municipality in Sweden with the ambition of phasing out fossil fuels by year 2030 is used as illustrative case example. The local energy system is modelled in detail and indirect water and land requirements are quantified for three stylised decarbonisation scenarios of pathways to meeting climate and energy requirements (related to SDG13 and SDG7, respectively). Total local, national and global implications are addressed for the use of water and land resources, which relate to SDG6 for water, and SDG2 and SDG15 for land use. We find that the magnitude and location of water and land impacts are largely pathway-dependent. Some scenarios of low carbon energy may impede progress on SDG15, while others may compromise SDG6. Data for the studied resource uses are incoherently reported and have important gaps. As a consequence, the study results are indicative and subject to uncertainty. Still, they highlight the need to recognise that resource use changes targeting one SDG in one locality have local and non-local impacts that may compromise progress other SDGs locally and/or elsewhere in the world.

  • Projekt: Forum för Industriell Framtid
  • 2013
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract

  • Correlation between photodiode monitoring and high speed imaging of the dynamics causing laser welding defects
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Congress proceedings. - Orlando, Fla : Laser institute of America. - 9780912035123 ; , s. 829-837
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today merely a few monitoring systems for in-process detection of laser welding defects are commercially available. Despite a trend towards cameras, industrially more robust is still a photodiode, measuring in an optically filtered spectral window either the thermal emissions from the melt and vapour or the laser beam reflections. The monitoring rule for each application is identified empirically through correlations between the signal dynamics and welding defects, as the linking mechanism is non-trivial and therefore hardly understood. Thus the method does not provide a systematic guideline to detect a certain welding defect. The here presented approach studies the context between the photodiode signal, the welding defects and the vapour, melt pool, keyhole and temperature dynamics. Simultaneous laser-illuminated high speed imaging is compared to photodiode monitoring at three spectral windows in order to identify through simultaneous timing any linking dynamics in a qualitative manner. Supportive methods are emission modelling and thermal imaging. Several cases of joints, materials and defects were studied to develop an illustrated theoretical description of the defect-signal correlations.

  • 14th NOLAMP Conference : The 14th Nordic Laser Materials Processing Conference, August 26th – 28th 2013, Gothenburg, Sweden
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Laser is a key element in obtaining a sustainable economy in Europe. Innovative laser processes will play a significant role in future green manufacturing as they provide a precise, well-controlled and highly effective energy deposition to the workpiece. Future challenges are to increase the spectrum of laser manufacturing technologies in all sectors where the laser can offer innovative product solutions, higher product quality, less environmental impact, higher productivity and in turn cost benefits. The NOLAMP conferences address all aspects of laser materials processing from fundamental science to industrial applications. The first NOLAMP conference took place in Oslo in 1987 in a period of intense development of the laser processes and their industrial applications. The NOLAMP has continued on a biannual cycle ever since, strengthening the Nordic laser community by encouraging knowledge transfer and networking. Now, 26 years later, in the forthcoming 14th NOLAMP, the research and development of processes like laser welding, laser hybrid welding, laser cutting and laser surface treatment is still very important, as well as the development of industrial applications and equipment for laser material processing. This time the NOLAMP Conference will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden. In this highly industrialized region of Sweden and with the close distance to Denmark, Norway and Finland, we hope to attract a strong participation from industry and the scientific community. On behalf of the Nordic laser community and Luleå University of Technology, it is our great pleasure to invite you to the 14th NOLAMP conference.
