Att göra olika lika : Universitetslärares uppfattningar om och erfarenheter av undervisning av funktionshindrade studenter

- Vid svenska universitet och högskolor pågår ett förändringsarbete vars syfte är att anpassa undervisningen och tillgängliggöra högskolan förfunktionshindrade. Vid Linköpings universitet arbetar Strategigruppen för lika villkor för att förebygga och åtgärda diskriminering och trakasserierpå både strukturell och individuell nivå.Forskningen om funktionshindrade studenter i högre utbildning är inte särskilt omfattande och samtidigt ökar antalet funktionshindradestuderande. Ny lagstiftning ställer nya krav på högskolors och universitets anpassning och tillgänglighet och universitetslärarna blir nyckelpersoneri studenternas möte med de akademiska studierna.I denna rapport presenteras en undersökning som fokuserat universitetslärares uppfattningar om och erfarenheter av undervisning avfunktionshindrade studenter. I fokusgruppssamtal har akademiska lärare samtalat om för området centrala begrepp och aktuell lagstiftning.De har också diskuterat undervisningserfarenheter och erfarenheter från möten med funktionshindrade studenter och grupper i vilka dessastudenter har ingått.Av resultaten framgår att lärare har kännedom om lagstiftningen gällande lika villkor för studier inom högre utbildning. Lärarna problematiserarlagstiftningen och dess konsekvenser under utbildningstiden och reflekterar över hur personer med olika funktionsnedsättningarska kunna hantera sin vardag och de krav de ställs inför i arbets- och vuxenliv. Lagstiftningen är inte alltid enkel att tolka och det lyfts framfunderingar huruvida det finns en gräns för möjligheter till studiernas anpassning och tillgängliggörande.Alla i studien deltagande lärare har erfarenhet av studerandegrupper i vilka funktionshindrade studenter ingått och de har mött bådesynliga och så kallade dolda funktionshinder. Lärarna visar på en tydlig ambition att skapa lika villkor för alla, men är osäkra på om studenternauppfattar tillrättalägganden och bemötande som ett verkligt och tillräckligt stöd. Öppenhet och information om såväl funktionshinder,behov som lämpliga stödinsatser efterfrågas av lärarna. Insatserna för att möta studenter utifrån deras olika behov innebär en ökad arbetsbördaoch brist på resurser av olika slag lyfts fram som begränsningar i arbetet. Examinationer är betydelsefulla när det gäller att upprätthållakvalitet i utbildningar och kurser och lärarna framhåller vikten av att samma kriterier för bedömning och samma krav ska uppfyllas

Att hantera läskrav i arbetet : om industriarbetare med läs- och skrivsvårigheter

- In our society, as in most societies of the world, learning to read and write is a self-evident part of the individual's development and socialisation into functional adult life. In the International Adult Literacy Survey study, 1994-1998 literacy was defined as "the ability to process information used in everyday life, at work, at home, and as a citizen". The results showed that there were substantial differences between the participating countries as regards the literacy level of the adult population. For all countries the results demonstrated that a high literacy level characterises individuals who read every day, at work and in their spare time, who take part in adult education, who have a high socio economic status and a good education.The present study aims at finding more knowledge about literacy demands in connection with work and how these demands are experienced and met by the individual. The study is restricted to individuals with a certain type of occupation and whose education is relevant to their line of work. In addition, these individuals have, according to themselves, pronounced reading and writing disabilities. In order to make the phenomena of reading and writing visible in daily work I chose the case study as research strategy. The data collection techniques I have used to form a basis for description, interpretation and analysis of the research objects are audio-taped interviews, questionnaires, reading tests, reading diaries and time-sampling diaries.The results show very clearly that reading and writing are necessary and important parts in coping with daily tasks in industrial work. The informants in the study said that it is not possible to avoid reading. Their work is organised in such a way, e.g., the increased use of computers, that reading is necessary. Most incidents of reading at work consist of reading of short units and limited sequences.There is some ambivalence in the informants' descriptions of literacy requirements and their own reading and writing ability. When they assess their ability in general terms they convey satisfaction with their level of performance. However, when they describe concrete reading and writing situations and the requirements connected with them, they report difficulties as well as feelings of inadequacy and discomfort.In the informants' stories two main types of strategies can be detected, which they have developed in order to cope with daily reading and writing tasks as well as new task demands. One of them was to try to reduce the number of occasions when reading or writing was necessary, or to avoid reading and writing and yet perform the task that was prescribed. The other type of strategy implied that the reading and writing activities was adapted specifically to the situation at hand.The informants did not seem to choose either avoiding or elaborating strategies, rather they described actions that can be referred to both of the main types of strategies. Persons who reported many incidents of reading and a considerable amount of reading time as part of their job, recorded elaborating strategies more often than avoiding. Their reading material seemed more varied and they tried more often to fulfil their tasks on their own or by asking for help. It was clear that some of these strategies had been developed in early childhood, when the informants were in the process of learning the basics of reading and writing.

- This is a presentation and an analysis of the International Adult Literacy Survey, IALS, the first international comparative study of reading ability and reading habits among adults. The study was carried out in seven countries in Europe and North America during 1994 och 1995. It was conducted by Statistics Canada, in cooperation with Educational Testing Service in USA, and OECD in Paris, France. The aim was to bring to a focus the relations between individuals' reading ability, educational level and occupation, and economic growth and development in society. A second aim was to identify groups of individuals who may suffer, socially as well as economically, because of a low level of reading ability.The National Agency for Education was responsible for the Swedish participation in the study. A representative sample of the population, 16 years of age and older, have taken part in the study, which was conducted by means of interviews and objective tests of reading ability.The results demonstrate that there are substantial differences in reading ability among the population both within the country and in comparison with other countries. Education lays the ground for the development of reading ability, but work-related reading and leisure reading both have an impact on further development of the ability.In analysing the Swedish data focus has been on three variables, education, reading ability and reading habits. Individuals with a high educational level demonstrated better reading ability and more frequent reading activities. both at work and in leisure, than did individuals with a lower educational level. Individuals with higher education read more books, visited a library more often and read much more in relation to work than did individuals with lower education.According to the IALS survey, however, approximately one third of the Swedish 16+ population did not reach the level of reading ability that is set in the national curriculum (Lpo 94) as a goal for the end of grade 9 in the Swedish compulsory school.This thesis also contains a pilot study, the aim of which is to test a method of researching adults' reading habits in depth. In the pilot study data were collected by means of reading-diaries. From the diaries it appeared that the time individuals reserved for reading during week days increased substantially from the lowest to the highest level of education. It was the time spent with reading in relation to work that made all the difference. It was also evident that the variation of reading materials was much larger for individuals with a high educational level than for those with a low educational level.The opportunities and possibilities for adults to improve their reading ability vary a great deal. There is every reason to emphasize the need for increased opportunities of recurrent education, in order to avoid a wider and deeper gap between individuals with high and low levels of reading ability. Further research about the context and requirements of adult reading in the future society is also needed.
