  • Toward Wireless Control in Industrial Process Automation : A Case Study at a Paper Mill
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Control Systems. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1066-033X .- 1941-000X. ; 39:5, s. 36-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless sensors and networks are used only occasionally in current control loops in the process industry. With rapid developments in embedded and highperformance computing, wireless communication, and cloud technology, drastic changes in the architecture and operation of industrial automation systems seem more likely than ever. These changes are driven by ever-growing demands on production quality and flexibility. However, as discussed in "Summary," there are several research obstacles to overcome. The radio communication environment in the process industry is often troublesome, as the environment is frequently cluttered with large metal objects, moving machines and vehicles, and processes emitting radio disturbances [1], [2]. The successful deployment of a wireless control system in such an environment requires careful design of communication links and network protocols as well as robust and reconfigurable control algorithms.

    • We study the length L-k of the shortest permutation containing all patterns of length k. We establish the bounds e(-2)k(2) < L-k <= (2/3 + o(1))k(2). We also prove that as k there are permutations of length (1/4+o(1))k(2) containing almost all patterns of length k.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Combinatorics, probability & computing. - 0963-5483 .- 1469-2163. ; 12, s. 401-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For a random graph on n vertices where the edges appear with individual rates, we give exact formulas for the expected time at which the number of components has gone down to k and the expected length of the corresponding minimal spanning forest. For a random bipartite graph we give a formula for the expected time at which a k-assignment appears. This result has a bearing on the random assignment problem.

  • Expected inversion number after k adjacent transpositions
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics. - 3540672478 ; , s. 677-685
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We give expressions for the expected number of inversions after t random adjacent transpositions have been performed on the identity permutation in Sn+1 The problem is a simplification of a problem motivated by genome evolution. For a fixed t and for all n greater than or equal to t, the expected number of inversions after t random adjacent transpositions isE-nt = t - 2/n ((t)(2)) + Sigma(r=2)(t) (-1)(r)/n(r) [2(r)C(r)((t)(r+1)) + 4d(r) ((t)(r))]where d(2) = 0, d(3) = 1, d(4) = 9, d(5) = 69,... is a certain integer sequence. An important part of the our method is the use of a heat. conduction analogy of the random walks, which guarantees certain properties of the solution.

    • We answer some questions concerning the so-called sigma -game of Sutner [Linear cellular automata and the Garden of Eden, Math. Intelligencer 11 (1989), 49-53]. It is played on a graph where each vertex has a lamp, the light of which is toggled by pressing any vertex with an edge directed to the lamp. For example, we show that every configuration of lamps can be lit if and only if the number of complete matchings in the graph is odd. In the special case of an orthogonal grid one gets a criterion for whether the number of monomer-dimer tilings of an m x n grid is odd or even.

  • Words with intervening neighbours in infinite Coxeter groups are reduced
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. - : The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. - 1097-1440 .- 1077-8926. ; 17:1, s. N9-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Consider a graph with vertex set S. A word in the alphabet S has the intervening neighbours property if any two occurrences of the same letter are separated by all its graph neighbours. For a Coxeter graph, words represent group elements. Speyer recently proved that words with the intervening neighbours property are reduced if the group is infinite and irreducible. We present a new and shorter proof using the root automaton for recognition of reduced words.

  • Coping with decisions on deviations in complex product development projects
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A strong need for resource efficiency within manufacturing companies have been driven extensively through pro-active planning and methods which have naturally resulted in an increased amount of strong couplings between product development projects, their activities, and resources. These strong couplings mean a high level of complexity where deviations are likely to occur on a regular basis which can spread quickly and have far reaching consequences. Praxis related to treatment of such deviations in product development projects has not been widely discussed. The subsequent question is therefore How are decisions on managing deviations made in practice?A Practice approach has been adopted in this research and led on to the use of context sensitive research methods in order to collect relevant data. The main amount of data has been gathered through one year of participant observations and document retrieval in a product development project. Also, a large amount of interviews have been used as a method for collecting data.38 deviations have been analysed through the identification of praxis which has been primarily analysed by three theories. The first theory, decision roles, has been used to clarify the different types of uncertainties people within complex product development projects need to manage in practice. The second theory, loosely coupled systems, shows how temporary organizing by loose couplings enables parallel management of both planned and unplanned activities when deviations occur. The third theory, Sensemaking, have been used to characterise processes related to different types of uncertainties. Conclusions are drawn regarding how people acts related to deviations are directly dependent on the types of uncertainties of the context as well as the situation itself. Uncertainties regarding choices, responsibilities, mobilization, and legitimization combined with the temporary organization leads to certain praxis patterns. The patterns can be used by project managers and other decision makers as a way of discussing temporary organization and how process emerge within the organization today, and how they would like resulting processes to be managed when deviations occur.

  • Being perceived as a ‘visitor’ in the nursing staff’s working arena : the involvement of relatives in daily caring activities in nursing homes in an urban community in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - Oxford : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 27:3, s. 677-685
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundIt is both complex and difficult for relatives when a loved one moves into a nursing home and many relatives are not prepared for the realities these new situations entail. Little attention has been paid to scrutinising the involvement of relatives in patient care, particularly in relation to the structures and routines of nursing homes or to the staff's reasoning concerning their involvement.AimTo describe, from a gender perspective, how nursing staff's routines and reasoning act to condition the involvement of relatives in nursing homes.MethodsFocused ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in a medium-sized urban community in central Sweden in three different nursing homes.ResultsThe nursing staff assigns a certain code of conduct to all relatives they perceived as ‘visitors’ in their working arena. This code of conduct was related to the routines and subcultures existing among the nursing staff and stemmed from a division of labour; the underlying concept of ‘visitor’ predetermined the potential for relatives' involvement. This involvement is explicitly related to the general gendered characteristics that exist in the nursing staff's perception of the relatives.DiscussionThe study's limitations are primarily concerned with shortcomings associated with a research presence during the fieldwork. The discussion focuses on the dimensions of power structures observed in the nursing home routines and the staff's reasoning based on their gendered assumptions. We argue that it is important to develop mechanisms that provide opportunities for nursing staff in elderly care to reflect on these structures without downplaying the excellent care they provide. We stress the importance of further exploring these issues concerning relatives and their involvement in nursing homes to facilitate the transition from informal caregiver to ‘visitor’.

  • Conditions for relatives' involvement in nursing homes
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall aim of this thesis was to describe and analyse how the involvement of relatives is conditioned in nursing homes from different critical perspectives. Gender perspectives, discourse analysis and intersectional theory are applied, based on social constructionist ontology. The thesis comprises three qualitative papers and data are based on ethnographically-focused fieldwork in three municipal nursing homes in the form of formal/informal interviews, participating observations and the analysis of documents.Based on gender perspectives, the routines and reasonings among nursing staff were studied and thematically analysed in relation to how these conditioned the involvement of relatives in the daily caring activities (I). In the second study (II), the nursing staff were interviewed in groups to describe, discursively analyse and identify the biopolitical meaning in the "involvement discourse" that was collectively constructed in the speech of the nursing staff concerning the involvement of relatives. In the last study (III), interviews with relatives were thematically analysed in the context of intersectional theory about their involvement in the nursing homes. The findings show that the conditions for relatives’ involvement were dynamic and constantly in re-negotiation, but also conservative and inflexible. This placed relatives in both privileged and unprivileged social positions in the nursing homes, which were relevant for their involvement. The relatives were considered to be "visitors", which conditioned the characteristics and levels of involvement in the care of the residents and was linked to gendered notions of the division of labor, both within the groups of relatives and between nursing staff and relatives (I). The involvement of relatives was conditioned by the biopolitics of an "involvement discourse" that prevailed in the nursing homes. This built upon family-oriented rhetorics and metaphors that upheld and legitimised notions about relatives. The relatives were considered to be members of the "old" family in relation to the "new" family represented by the nursing staff (II). The relatives described how they were positioned in a betweenship, squeezed between different competing social musts from the older family members, the nursing homes as institutions and the nursing staff (III).Inverting the prevailing picture of the involvement of relatives would make it possible to consider the nursing staff as pedagogical, professional and caring "visitors" in the nursing homes for the benefit of the residents and their relatives. This could be achieved through a constructive change management which emphasises the learning of nursing staff, their responsibility and the emotions of relatives, along with a focus on alternative notions of involvement, where relatives are included in the development of quality of care in Swedish nursing homes.
