  • Effect of Dwell-times on Crack Propagation in Superalloys
  • 2015
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gas turbines are widely used in industry for power generation and as a power source at "hard to reach" locations where other possibilities for electrical supply are insufficient. There is a strong need for greener energy, considering the effect that pollution has had on global warming, and we need to come up with ways of producing cleaner electricity. A way to achieve this is by increasing the combustion temperature in gas turbines. This increases the demand on the high temperature performance of the materials used e.g. superalloys in the turbine. These high combustion temperatures can lead to detrimental degradation of critical components. These components are commonly subjected to cyclic loading of different types e.g. combined with dwell-times and overloads at elevated temperatures, which influence the crack growth. Dwell-times have shown to accelerate crack growth and change the cracking behaviour in both Inconel 718 and Haynes 282. Overloads at the beginning of the dwell-time cycle have shown to retard the dwell time effect on crack growth in Inconel 718. To understand these effects more microstructural investigations are needed. The work presented in this licentiate thesis was conducted under the umbrella of the research program Turbo Power; "High temperature fatigue crack propagation in nickel-based superalloys", concentrating on fatigue crack growth mechanisms in superalloys during dwell-times, which have shown to have a devastating effect on the crack propagation behaviour. Mechanical testing was performed under operation-like conditions in order to achieve representative microstructures and material data for the subsequent microstructural work. The microstructures were microscopically investigated in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) using electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) as well as using light optical microscopy. The outcome of this work has shown that there is a significant increase in crack growth rate when dwell-times are introduced at the maximum load (0% overload) in the fatigue cycle. With the introduction of a dwell-time there is also a shift from transgranular to intergranular crack growth for both Inconel 718 and Haynes 282. When an overload is applied prior to the dwell-time, the crack growth rate decreases with increasing overload levels in Inconel 718. At high temperature crack growth in Inconel 718 took place as intergranular crack growth along grain boundaries due to oxidation and the creation of nanometric voids. Another observed growth mechanism was crack advance along phase boundaries with subsequent severe oxidation of the phase. This thesis comprises two parts. The first giving an introduction to the field of superalloys and the acting microstructural mechanisms that influence fatigue during dwell times. The second part consists of two appended papers, which report the work completed so far in the project.

  • Analysis of Lateral Thermal Coupling for GaN MMIC Technologies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 66:10, s. 4430-4438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a study of the lateral heat propagation in an aluminum gallium nitride/gallium nitride (AlGaN/GaN) heterostructure grown on a silicon carbide substrate. The study is enabled by the design of a temperature sensor that utilizes the temperature-dependent I-V characteristic of a semiconductor resistor, making it suitable for integration in GaN monolithic microwave integrated circuit technologies. Using the sensor, we are able to characterize the thermal transient response and extract lateral thermal time constants from the measurements. Time constants in the range from 25 mu s to 1.2 ms are identified. Furthermore, the heat propagation properties are characterized for heat source-to-sensor distances of 86-484 mu m, resulting in delay times from 3.5 to 111 mu s. It is shown that both the time constants and propagation delay increase with temperature. An empirical model of the sensor current versus temperature and voltage is proposed and used to predict the junction temperature of the sensor. The study provides knowledge for heat management design and proposes an integrated temperature measurement solution for future highly integrated GaN applications.

  • Investigation of iron losses during desulphurisation of hot metal utilising nepheline syenite
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ironmaking & steelmaking. - 0301-9233 .- 1743-2812. ; 40:6, s. 436-442
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Iron losses during calcium carbide based hot metal desulphurisation have been studied via large scale investigations of slag from the slag pit as well as slag sampling during desulphurisation at SSAB EMEA in Luleå. The desulphurisation slag, after injection of calcium carbide, is normally solid and contains large amounts of iron. An alkali containing mineral, nepheline syenite, was mixed together with the calcium carbide to form a more fluid slag as the iron losses originate from enclosed metal droplets in the slag as well as drawn off hot metal during slag skimming. The slag amount after slag skimming decreased from 28.1 to 25.1 kg t-21 hot metal with addition of 5 wt-% nepheline syenite to the calcium carbide, and the magnetic fraction of the slag from the slag pit decreased from 2.5 to 1.9%. Finally, no negative effect on the reagent efficiency was observed during the trials with addition of nepheline syenite.

  • Numerical modeling and verification of gas flow through a network of crossed narrow v-grooves
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering. - : IOP Publishing. - 0960-1317 .- 1361-6439. ; 16:10, s. 2006-2013
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gas flow through a network of crossing thin micro-machined channels has been successfully modeled and simulated. The crossings are formed by two sets of v-grooves that intersect as two silicon wafers are bonded together. The gas is distributed from inlets via a manifold of channels to the narrow v-grooves. The narrow v-grooves could work as a particle filter. The fluidic model is derived from the Navier–Stokes equation and assumes laminar isothermal flow and incorporates small Knudsen number corrections and Poiseuille number calculations. The simulations use the finite element method. Several elements of the full crossing network model are treated separately before lumping them together: the straight v-grooves, a single crossing in an infinite set and a set of exactly four crossings along the flow path. The introduction of a crossing effectively corresponds to a virtual reduction of the length of the flow path, thereby defining a new effective length. The first and last crossings of each flow path together contribute to a pressure drop equal to that from three ordinary crossings. The derived full network model has been compared to previous experimental results on several differently shaped crossed v-groove networks. Within the experimental errors, the model corresponds to the mass flow and pressure drop measurements. The main error source is the uncertainty in v-groove width which has a profound impact on the fluidic behavior.

  • Falling Angel - a Wrist Worn Fall Detection System Using K-NN Algorithm
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wrist worn fall detection system has been developed where the accelerometer data from an angel sensor is analyzed by a two-layered algorithm in an android phone. Here, the first layer uses a threshold to find potential falls and if the thresholds are met, then in the second layer a machine learning i.e., k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) algorithm analyses the data to differentiate it from Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in order to filter out false positives. The final result of this project using the k-NN algorithm provides a classification sensitivity of 96.4%. Here, the acquired sensitivity is 88.1% for the fall detection and the specificity for ADL is 98.1%.

  • Characterization of Shear-Sensitive Genes in the NormalRat Aorta Identifies Hand2 as a Major Flow-ResponsiveTranscription Factor
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 7:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Shear forces play a key role in the maintenance of vessel wall integrity. Current understanding regarding shear-dependent gene expression is mainly based on in vitro or in vivo observations with experimentally deranged shear, hence reflecting acute molecular events in relation to flow. Our objective was to determine wall shear stress (WSS) in the rat aorta and study flow-dependent vessel wall biology under physiological conditions. Methods and Results: Animal-specific aortic WSS magnitude and vector direction were estimated using computational fluid dynamic simulation based on aortic geometry and flow information acquired by MRI. Two distinct flow pattern regions were identified in the normal rat aorta; the distal part of the inner curvature being exposed to low WSS and a non-uniform vector direction, and a region along the outer curvature being subjected to markedly higher levels of WSS and a uniform vector direction. Microarray analysis revealed a strong differential expression between the flow regions, particularly associated with transcriptional regulation. In particular, several genes related to Ca2+-signalling, inflammation, proliferation and oxidative stress were among the most highly differentially expressed. Conclusions: Microarray analysis validated the CFD-defined WSS regions in the rat aorta, and several novel flow-dependent genes were identified. The importance of these genes in relation to atherosusceptibility needs further investigation.

  • The Comet Interceptor Mission
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Space Science Reviews. - : Springer Nature. - 0038-6308 .- 1572-9672. ; 220:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed to the European Space Agency in 2018, and formally adopted by the agency in June 2022, for launch in 2029 together with the Ariel mission. Comet Interceptor will take advantage of the opportunity presented by ESA’s F-Class call for fast, flexible, low-cost missions to which it was proposed. The call required a launch to a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L2 point. The mission can take advantage of this placement to wait for the discovery of a suitable comet reachable with its minimum Δ V capability of 600 ms − 1 . Comet Interceptor will be unique in encountering and studying, at a nominal closest approach distance of 1000 km, a comet that represents a near-pristine sample of material from the formation of the Solar System. It will also add a capability that no previous cometary mission has had, which is to deploy two sub-probes – B1, provided by the Japanese space agency, JAXA, and B2 – that will follow different trajectories through the coma. While the main probe passes at a nominal 1000 km distance, probes B1 and B2 will follow different chords through the coma at distances of 850 km and 400 km, respectively. The result will be unique, simultaneous, spatially resolved information of the 3-dimensional properties of the target comet and its interaction with the space environment. We present the mission’s science background leading to these objectives, as well as an overview of the scientific instruments, mission design, and schedule.
