  • Dense packing of patterns in a permutation
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Annals of Combinatorics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0218-0006 .- 0219-3094. ; 11:3-4, s. 459-470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the length L-k of the shortest permutation containing all patterns of length k. We establish the bounds e(-2)k(2) < L-k <= (2/3 + o(1))k(2). We also prove that as k there are permutations of length (1/4+o(1))k(2) containing almost all patterns of length k.

  • Falling Angel - a Wrist Worn Fall Detection System Using K-NN Algorithm
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A wrist worn fall detection system has been developed where the accelerometer data from an angel sensor is analyzed by a two-layered algorithm in an android phone. Here, the first layer uses a threshold to find potential falls and if the thresholds are met, then in the second layer a machine learning i.e., k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) algorithm analyses the data to differentiate it from Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in order to filter out false positives. The final result of this project using the k-NN algorithm provides a classification sensitivity of 96.4%. Here, the acquired sensitivity is 88.1% for the fall detection and the specificity for ADL is 98.1%.

  • Toward Wireless Control in Industrial Process Automation : A Case Study at a Paper Mill
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Control Systems. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1066-033X .- 1941-000X. ; 39:5, s. 36-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless sensors and networks are used only occasionally in current control loops in the process industry. With rapid developments in embedded and highperformance computing, wireless communication, and cloud technology, drastic changes in the architecture and operation of industrial automation systems seem more likely than ever. These changes are driven by ever-growing demands on production quality and flexibility. However, as discussed in "Summary," there are several research obstacles to overcome. The radio communication environment in the process industry is often troublesome, as the environment is frequently cluttered with large metal objects, moving machines and vehicles, and processes emitting radio disturbances [1], [2]. The successful deployment of a wireless control system in such an environment requires careful design of communication links and network protocols as well as robust and reconfigurable control algorithms.

  • On the causes and effects of specialization : A mathematical approach
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Division of labor and division of knowledge are so important andcommon in society today that it is almost impossible to imagine asociety where everyone knows the same things and perform the sametasks. This would be a society where everyone grows, or gathers, andprepares their own food, makes their own tools, builds their ownhouse, and so on. Cultural evolution is the field of research that studies the creationand diffusion of ideas and societies. It is very uncommon for thesestudies to take into account the effects of specialization. Thisthesis will show that specialization is of great importance tocultural evolution. The thesis is divided into three parts: one introduction and two papers. The introduction covers the mathematical models used byeconomists to study the relation between the market and division oflabor. The first paper is an interdisciplinary survey of the researchon division of labor and specialization, including both theoretic andempirical studies. The second paper is a mathematical model of howspecialization of knowledge (i.e. higher education) leads to socialstratification. The model is tested against statistical data fromseveral countries and found to be a good predictor of the differencesin income between people of high and low education.

  • A partial-equilibrium model of the electricity market
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a model of the electricity market which has a simple connection to the rest of the economy, due to a quasi-linear utility function.A key stochastic parameter shifts electricity demand between points of time. The correlation between these demand shifts and the variation of supply from variable renewable electricity (VRE) sources is crucial for the equilibrium price of electricity.Based on these equilibria we compute the value factors of VREs, as well as producer and consumer surpluses. An outcome of the model analysis is that value factors of VREs decrease as their penetration gets higher, which is also commonly found empirically, but only up to a point.

  • Human Capital and Innovations
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the interaction between human capital and innovations in the process of economic growth. Using a model of endogenous economic growth, the focus of our analysis is on the incentives to acquire human capital and how they are affected by taxes on human capital and other policy instruments. In contrast to many other growth models we find that the taxation on human capital has a substantial negative effect on the accumulation of it. This in turn lowers the income growth rate. While subsidies to research and to intermediate inputs have positive effects on growth (and must be strictly positive in social optimum), they do not necessarily imply that there will be larger stock of human capital in the economy. If the elasticity of intertemporal substitution in consumption is sufficiently low, these policy instruments stimulate growth by inducing a reallocation of a shrinking stock of human capital in the direction of research.

  • Human capital, innovation, and growth
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Economic Theory. - : WILEY. - 1742-7355 .- 1742-7363.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the interaction between human capital and innovation in the process of economic growth. Using a model of endogenous growth, we focus on how taxes and other policy instruments affect the incentives to invest in human capital. In contrast to many other growth models we find that the taxation of human capital has a substantial negative effect on its accumulation. This in turn reduces innovation and, consequently, the income growth rate. More surprisingly, other policies that are intended to stimulate growth may have opposing effects on innovation and the accumulation of human capital. For example, while subsidies to research and to intermediate inputs do have positive effects on innovation and growth, they lead to a lower stock of human capital, in the empirically relevant case when the elasticity of intertemporal substitution in consumption is low.

  • Modelling the value of variable renewable electricity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1876-6102. ; , s. 3358-3362
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes a simple microeconomic model of electricity market equilibrium. The parameter that shifts the demand between different points of time appears as an additive term. The equilibrium analysis can then be conveniently focused on the relation between two quantities, namely the electricity supply from intermittent sources and the subsistence level of electricity use. Our model is able to mimic the common empirical finding that a higher penetration of variable renewable electricity leads to a lower value factor for this type of power sources.
