  • Skam, moralarbete och faderskap : en studie om mötet mellan socialsekreterare och pappor vid våld i nära relationer
  • 2024
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Men's domestic violence and/or abuse (DVA) is a widespread social issue. Often, the men are fathers, and the victims are mothers and children. In Sweden, social workers (SWs) are expected to involve these fathers in child protection investigations (CPIs) and work towards changing their behavior. However, engaging fathers in CPIs has proven to be a challenging task, especially when they involve DVA by fathers. The overall aim of this licentiate thesis is to examine how fathers can be engaged in CPIs initiated as a result of their suspected DVA against the mothers of their children. The licentiate thesis is a compilation thesis that consist of two articles, with the first having been published in a peer-review journal and the second submitted to a journal awaiting review. Using qualitative methods. I conducted semi structured interviews with 15 social workers on a total of 31 occasions during their work with 12 ongoing CPIs. Seven fathers have also been interviewed. The interviewed fathers had been involved in CPIs as a result of their DVA against the mothers of their children and had undergone treatment targeting their violent/abusive behavior. The interviews with the SWs are addressed in the first article, and the interviews with the fathers in the second article. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. The first article examines the strategies used by SWs to achieve cooperation with fathers in CPIs that involve the father being suspected of DVA against the child's mother. This analysis is rooted in the framework of shame, guilt, and social bonds. The results suggest that whether social workers succeed in achieving cooperation with fathers is related to the social workers' strategies of building secure social bonds with the fathers, which may alleviate the fathers' feelings of shame. However, there is a risk that these strategies may lead to DVA being minimized or overlooked. Striking a balance between building a social bond and addressing DVA is crucial, and the timing of addressing DVA plays a central role. The second article highlights fathers' experiences of interactions with SWs in the context of CPIs initiated as a result of their DVA against the mothers of their children. In particular, the focus is directed at how ideals of fatherhood, power relations, and shame influence fathers' experiences of engaging in these meetings. The analysis is guided by shame, guilt and social bonds linked to a gender theoretical framework. The results suggest that DVA contributes to fathers violating moral ideals of good fatherhood, which threatens to deprive them of contact with their children and also triggers feelings of shame. In the CPIs, it is the SWs, often female, who hold power over the processes while fathers are subordinated, which challenges expected power structures and hegemonic masculinity ideals. Fathers' engagement in CPIs is enabled when fathers adopt a subordinate position, which is facilitated by SWs meeting them with care and non-judgmental attitudes. This subordinate position can be a useful means for fathers to maintain an intact masculine position when DVA is exposed, shame is triggered, and their fatherhood and social bonds are threatened. However, SWs need to be attentive to the risk that fathers may both downplay their DVA and adopt positions that may be perceived as caring, egalitarian, and change-oriented even though their dominance – in the form of DVA – may persist. In summary, the study indicates that it is challenging but possible to successfully engage these fathers in CPIs. The study suggests that SWs need to balance building social bonds with the fathers and addressing the violence without imposing further shame. The findings highlight a particularly crucial aspect in the interaction, which is the SWs' ability to meet the fathers in a way that they do not feel judged for who they are - perpetrators of DVA. Instead, focusing on the violence as actions, on what they have done. In doing so, actions are separated from the self and can instead manifest as guilt. This approach can both facilitate fathers' engagement in CPIs and point towards taking responsibility for and changing the violent/abusive behaviors.

  • MUCH : The Malmö University-Chalmers Corpus of Academic Writing as a Process
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 10th Teaching and Language Corpora Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • MUCH: THE MALMÖ UNIVERSITY-CHALMERS CORPUS OF ACADEMIC WRITING AS A PROCESS Andreas Eriksson, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg; Damian Finnegan, Asko Kauppinen, Maria Wiktorsson, Anna Wärnsby, Malmö University, Malmö; Peter Withers, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen This poster introduces a recently-launched corpus project which aims to compile and monitor various text drafts involved in the writing process of EFL students in higher education. The corpus material will consist of three drafts of undergraduate, master or PhD student texts. Additionally, the corpus will contain a collection of self-reflective papers. Papers will be collected from approximately 400 students per year over a three-year period. In addition to parts-of-speech tagging, the corpus will include peer comments between the first and second drafts and teacher comments between the second and third drafts, as well as annotations of information structure and rhetorical structures. Upon its completion, the corpus will consist of about 500,000 words, excluding the metadata and peer and teacher comments. The corpus is primarily an academic writing research corpus, but also a pedagogic and linguistic corpus, and it is the combination of these perspectives that we would like to emphasise. One important aim of the project is to narrow the gap between writing pedagogy and the use of corpora for teaching and learning purposes. In writing pedagogy, the focus has been on issues such as writing as social action (Miller 1984), feedback processes (Hyland & Hyland 2006) and the development of academic literacy (Lea & Street 1998, Lillis & Scott 2007, Street 2004), whereas there has been a tendency in corpus-driven and corpus-based pedagogy to focus on linguistic aspects of language learning, such as vocabulary, grammar and phraseology. This tendency is, for instance, evidenced in Flowerdew’s (2010) comprehensive overview of how corpora have been used in writing instruction. There are obviously notable exceptions to this somewhat sweeping description (see e.g. Charles 2007 and Flowerdew 2008). However, a lot more can be done to merge these two perspectives. We believe that a corpus containing drafts tagged for information structure, rhetorical structures, and linguistic structures as well as peer and teacher feedback is an important step in such a process. In this poster, we will establish the rationale for the project by exemplifying how the corpus can be used for research purposes as well as teaching and learning purposes. We will show how the corpus can be employed in the study of: 1) peer and teacher comments; 2) thesis statements and how these are formed, located and realised in students’ writing processes; and 3) linguistic structures, such as elements recurring in thesis statements. • 2008
  • Ingår i: Kvinnovetenskaplig tidskrift. - : Malmö högskola, Studentcentrum. - 0348-8365. ; :1, s. 55-57
Men vad betyder egentligen statens ansvarstagande?

  • A cross-sectional study of career paths for Swedish registered nurses with a doctoral degree : When aspirations and possibilities collide
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic journal of nursing research. - : Sage Publications. - 2057-1585 .- 2057-1593. ; 43:3-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Registered nurses with a doctoral degree are important for the quality of care, nursing education, and nursing research. Still, postgraduate career paths are criticized for being too vague. To enable career path development, mapping of the current situation appears fundamental. The objective was therefore to chart the current professional positions and work conditions and to explore the future career aspirations of registered nurses with a doctoral degree in Sweden. A cross-sectional survey study was conducted including 118 participants, all nurses with a doctoral degree earned between 2016 and 2022. This study is reported in accordance with STROBE. The participants reported a significant change from hospital-based positions before doctoral studies, towards university-based positions after graduation. This is clearly in contrast to their expressed aspiration to hold a shared position, remaining in contact with the clinical context. In conclusion, a national collaboration is needed and wanted regarding career opportunities for registered nurses with a doctoral degree in Sweden. Furthermore, career paths within nursing science need to be established within the clinical context.

  • Orthognathic surgery - postoperative clinical and radiographic follow-up routines at Swedish oral and maxillofacial surgery departments
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Swedish Dental Journal. - : Swedish Dental Journal (Sveriges Tandläkarförbund). - 0347-9994. ; 36:3, s. 109-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Orthognathic surgery is a frequent procedure at Swedish Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments. The number of clinical and radiographic postoperative follow-up examinations and the choice of radiographic methods seem to vary. The intention with this study was to find out when postoperative clinical and radiographic follow-up was performed following orthognathic surgery and the type of radiographic examinations that were used. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanIn 2009, all Swedish Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments in the Public Health Service (25 centres) were given a form containing standardized questions on the time for clinical follow-up after orthognathic surgery and the radiographic examinations used. A pilot study on 49 consecutive patients at one of the centres was performed to determine if the postoperative radiographic examinations added additional information, leading to further procedures compared to the clinical observations only. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanA one-year follow-up was the most frequently used clinical control reported by 15 centres, and a six-month follow-up, the next most frequent. At 14 of the 15 centres, radiographic examinations were included at the one-year follow-up. A five-year clinical and radiographic follow-up was reported by two centres. One or, at the most, two postoperative radiographic follow-up sessions were reported by 68% of the centres. Profile and panoramic imaging were most often used. In the evaluation of the postoperative handling of the 49 consecutive patients in the pilot study, a radiolucency around a fixation screw noted radiographically was the only additional postoperative radiological finding that resulted in a surgical procedure. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanPostoperative clinical and radiographic follow-up routines following orthognathic surgery vary considerably between the Swedish Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Departments. There appears to be a need for studies on the value of the information, which repeated postoperative clinical and radiographic follow-up controls add in routine medical attendance.

  • Core competencies for a biomedical laboratory scientist - a Delphi study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Medical Education. - : BMC. - 1472-6920. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background After completing university education, biomedical laboratory scientists work in clinical laboratories, in biomedical research laboratories, in biotech, and in pharmaceutical companies. Laboratory diagnostics have undergone rapid development over the recent years, with the pace showing no signs of abatement. This rapid development challenges the competence of the staff and will most certainly influence the education of future staff. This study aimed to examine what was considered the necessary competencies needed to pursue a career as a biomedical laboratory scientist. Methods A modified Delphi technique was used, with the panel of experts expressing their views in a series of three questionnaire. Consensus was defined as the point which 75 % or more of the panel participants agreed that a particular competency was necessary. Results The study highlights the perceived importance of mostly generic competencies that relate to quality, quality assurance, and accuracy, as well as different aspects of safety, respect, trustworthiness (towards patients/clients and colleagues), and communication skills. The results also stress the significance of self-awareness and professionality. Conclusions We identified important competencies for biomedical laboratory scientists. Together with complementary information from other sources, i.e., guidelines, laws, and scientific publications, the competencies identified can be used as learning outcomes in a competency-based education to provide students with all the competencies needed to work as professional biomedical laboratory scientists.

  • Resource use of healthcare services 1 year after stroke : a secondary analysis of a cluster-randomised controlled trial of a client-centred activities of daily living intervention
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 8:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to compare the total use of healthcare services in the course of the first year after a stroke between participants who, after the acute care, had received occupational therapy as a client-centred activities of daily living (ADL) intervention (CADL) and participants who had received usual ADL intervention (UADL).DESIGN: A secondary analysis of a multicentre cluster-randomised controlled trial (RCT).SETTING: Primary and secondary care in Sweden.PARTICIPANTS: Participants were included if they: (1) had received CADL or UADL in the RCT, either as inpatients in geriatric rehabilitation units or in their own homes, and (2) data could be retrieved about their use of healthcare services provided by the county council from computerised registers.INTERVENTIONS: CADL or UADL.OUTCOME MEASURES: Inpatient and outpatient healthcare in the course of the first year after stroke.RESULTS: Participants from 7 of the 16 units included in the RCT met the criteria. Participants in the CADL group (n=26) who received geriatric inpatient rehabilitation had a shorter length of hospital stay (p=0.03) than participants in the UADL group (n=46), and the CADL group with home rehabilitation (n=13) had fewer outpatient contacts (p=0.01) compared with the UADL group (n=25). Multiple regression analyses showed that in four of the models, a higher age was associated with a lower use of healthcare services. The use of healthcare services was also associated (some of the models) with dependence in ADL, stroke severity and type of rehabilitation received, CADL or UADL.CONCLUSIONS: The provision of client-centred occupational therapy after stroke did not appear to increase the use of healthcare services during the first year after stroke.rrrrr TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT01417585.
