  • The challenge of abstaining in a culture of action points
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: npj Climate Action. - : Springer Nature. - 2731-9814. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Behavioural change is necessary in order to reach a sustainable society. Sometimes this will translate into doing less and it is likely that we need to stop some things entirely. We lay out the multiple challenges of making the act of abstaining count. The issue is partly philosophical - we ask ourselves how to intellectually and semantically frame abstaining; partly practical – how can we count abstaining? It concerns a broader understanding of modernity and interrogates the ideas of progress and growth, technological change, and innovation. Abstaining will also be a moving target as expectations and demands shift over time.

  • Exceptionalism and Evasion : How Scholars Reason About Air Travel
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Academic Flying and the Means of Communication. - Singapore : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9789811649103 ; , s. 159-183
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding how scholars reason about their own flying habits is important when dealing with the problems of large emissions from academic air travel. This study is based on a travel habits survey with scholars at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. KTH has relatively high emissions from air travel, but at the same time, it has a high profile in matters of sustainability and a lot of research related to this theme. One can therefore assume a high degree of knowledge about the climate crisis and the climate impact of various actions. It is also plausible that KTH scholars meet special expectations to be role models and that practices in conflict with their teaching can have consequences for the public confidence in the university. In this study, we look at how scholars reason about how emissions from their flying could be reduced. Their responses display a spectrum of varying attitudes, from climate scepticism to a commitment to radical transformation, with the majority in between, either suggesting different types of concrete changes or invoking arguments to justify the status quo. The proposed interventions, several of which are ingenious and wise, can guide university managements to strategies that have support from employees. The more reluctant arguments point to cultural and discursive habits that must be understood and met in an empathetic way.

  • HCI and UN's Sustainable Development Goals : Responsibilities, Barriers and Opportunities
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: NordiCHI '16. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Digital Library. - 9781450347631
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite increasing interest, Sustainable HCI has been critiqued for doing too little, and perhaps also at times for doing the wrong things. Still, a field like Human-Computer Interaction should aim at being part of transforming our society into a more sustainable one. But how do we do that, and, what are we aiming for? With this workshop, we propose that HCI should start working with the new global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that were formally adopted by the UN in September 2015. How can Sustainable HCI be inspired by, and contribute to these goals? What should we in the field of HCI do more of, and what should we perhaps do less of? In what areas should we form partnerships in order to reach the Sustainable Development Goals and with whom should we partner?

  • ‘A Limited Guardian Should First and Foremost Get to Know the Person He Helps’ : Experiences of Having a Limited Guardian from the Perspective of Adults with Intellectual Disability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - : Stockholm University Press. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 24:1, s. 288-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One goal with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is ensuring that persons with disabilities have the right to support in reaching and acting upon decisions. The aim of this pilot study was to explore how adults with intellectual disability describe their experiences of receiving support and being represented by a limited guardian. Two overall themes emerged from eight qualitative individual semi-structured interviews: Indispensable and valuable support and Mismanagement of the assignment. Our findings showed that limited guardianship is more complex than it may initially seem due to overlaps between protecting rights, ensuring support for the person, and managing financial matters. Mutual trust and the guardian’s ability to listen and be open to the client’s changing needs reduced the risk of the client being misrepresented or receiving insufficient support. To support assisted decision-making, limited guardians must develop their pedagogical skills and gain knowledge about intellectual disability.

  • Characterization of lamin mutation phenotypes in Drosophila and comparison to human laminopathies
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 2:6, s. e532-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lamins are intermediate filament proteins that make up the nuclear lamina, a matrix underlying the nuclear membrane in all metazoan cells that is important for nuclear form and function. Vertebrate A-type lamins are expressed in differentiating cells, while B-type lamins are expressed ubiquitously. Drosophila has two lamin genes that are expressed in A- and B-type patterns, and it is assumed that similarly expressed lamins perform similar functions. However, Drosophila and vertebrate lamins are not orthologous, and their expression patterns evolved independently. It is therefore of interest to examine the effects of mutations in lamin genes. Mutations in the mammalian lamin A/C gene cause a range of diseases, collectively called laminopathies, that include muscular dystrophies and premature aging disorders. We compared the sequences of lamin genes from different species, and we have characterized larval and adult phenotypes in Drosophila bearing mutations in the lam gene that is expressed in the B-type pattern. Larvae move less and show subtle muscle defects, and surviving lam adults are flightless and walk like aged wild-type flies, suggesting that lam phenotypes might result from neuromuscular defects, premature aging, or both. The resemblance of Drosophila lam phenotypes to human laminopathies suggests that some lamin functions may be performed by differently expressed genes in flies and mammals. Such still-unknown functions thus would not be dependent on lamin gene expression pattern, suggesting the presence of other lamin functions that are expression dependent. Our results illustrate a complex interplay between lamin gene expression and function through evolution.
