- Panelsamtal om socialtjänstens insatser för att hantera våld i nära relationer, särskilt de olika former av våld som berör barn. Samtalet kommer att kretsa kring frågan om hur ett mer samordnat och barncentrerat system av insatser mot våld kan åstadkommas, ett system där våldsutsatta barn både kan få det skydd och stöd de behöver, och vara delaktiga i alla processer som berör dem. Utgångspunkten är de olika medverkandes erfarenheter av problematiken kring våld, barn och samordning inom socialtjänsten och mellan socialtjänst och andra aktörer. Children exposed to violence as crime victims : an issue for Nordic children's rights and women's shelter organisations?

- Efforts to promote the protection of and support to abused women have opened up for new understandings of children who see, hear or in other ways are exposed to violence in their families and its consequences. However, it is also clear that although women’s shelters and children’s rights organisations increasingly have come to share the understanding of children exposed to violence as subjected to violence and crime victims, there are also differences between these organisations: they take different social positions and social inequalities as their point of departure – children and age, and women and gender respectively. Furthermore, the situation is not the same in all of the Nordic countries. The paper draws upon a pilot project mapping the range of interpretative frames and strategies used in relation to the phenomenon of children exposed to violence by a selection of children’s rights and women’s shelter organisations in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The empirical material consists of different documents and interviews with key persons from 10 organisations working at a national level. The paper explores the differences and similarities between different organisations and different countries when it comes to interpretative frames, organisational activities and strategies in relation to policy change, particularly as regards the criminalisation of children’s exposure to violence.

Vulnerable and victimized children's participation in research processes

- The paper is based upon an ongoing explorative research project on children as social actors in investigation processes in legal conflicts concerning child custody, contact or residence with particular focus on children whose father is violent to the mother. Drawing upon interviews with 17 girls and boys, who have participated in such processes, we discuss what we may learn from these interviews when it comes to developing anti-oppressive practices when vulnerable and victimised children are included in family law investigations as well as when they are informants in research. In particular, we focus upon the organisation of interview processes and interactions between adult researchers and child informants in interview encounters. We point to a number of ways in which it may be possible to negotiate the tensions between, on the one hand, victimized children’s vulnerability and dependence upon adults for protection and support, and, on the other hand, these children’s agency and rights to participation. The aim is to show how research practices may simultaneously follow, on the one hand, principles of children’s citizenship and rights to democratic participation, and on the other hand, principles of protection, support, ‘recognition’ and ‘affirmation’ of experiences of violence.
