  • Anger and disgust shape judgments of social sanctions across cultures, especially in high individual autonomy societies
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Nature Research. - 2045-2322. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When someone violates a social norm, others may think that some sanction would be appropriate. We examine how the experience of emotions like anger and disgust relate to the judged appropriateness of sanctions, in a pre-registered analysis of data from a large-scale study in 56 societies. Across the world, we find that individuals who experience anger and disgust over a norm violation are more likely to endorse confrontation, ostracism and, to a smaller extent, gossip. Moreover, we find that the experience of anger is consistently the strongest predictor of judgments of confrontation, compared to other emotions. Although the link between state-based emotions and judgments may seem universal, its strength varies across countries. Aligned with theoretical predictions, this link is stronger in societies, and among individuals, that place higher value on individual autonomy. Thus, autonomy values may increase the role that emotions play in guiding judgments of social sanctions.

  • Secretory Phospholipase A(2)-IIA and Cardiovascular Disease
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American College of Cardiology. - : Elsevier. - 0735-1097 .- 1558-3597. ; 62:21, s. 1966-1976
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives This study sought to investigate the role of secretory phospholipase A(2) (sPLA(2))-IIA in cardiovascular disease. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanBackground Higher circulating levels of sPLA(2)-IIA mass or sPLA(2) enzyme activity have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events. However, it is not clear if this association is causal. A recent phase III clinical trial of an sPLA(2) inhibitor (varespladib) was stopped prematurely for lack of efficacy. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanMethods We conducted a Mendelian randomization meta-analysis of 19 general population studies (8,021 incident, 7,513 prevalent major vascular events [MVE] in 74,683 individuals) and 10 acute coronary syndrome (ACS) cohorts (2,520 recurrent MVE in 18,355 individuals) using rs11573156, a variant in PLA2G2A encoding the sPLA(2)-IIA isoenzyme, as an instrumental variable. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanResults PLA2G2A rs11573156 C allele associated with lower circulating sPLA(2)-IIA mass (38% to 44%) and sPLA(2) enzyme activity (3% to 23%) per C allele. The odds ratio (OR) for MVE per rs11573156 C allele was 1.02 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.98 to 1.06) in general populations and 0.96 (95% CI: 0.90 to 1.03) in ACS cohorts. In the general population studies, the OR derived from the genetic instrumental variable analysis for MVE for a 1-log unit lower sPLA(2)-IIA mass was 1.04 (95% CI: 0.96 to 1.13), and differed from the non-genetic observational estimate (OR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.61 to 0.79). In the ACS cohorts, both the genetic instrumental variable and observational ORs showed a null association with MVE. Instrumental variable analysis failed to show associations between sPLA2 enzyme activity and MVE. less thanbrgreater than less thanbrgreater thanConclusions Reducing sPLA(2)-IIA mass is unlikely to be a useful therapeutic goal for preventing cardiovascular events.

  • Observation of short- and long-range hybridization of a buried Cu monolayer in Ni
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B Condensed Matter. - 0163-1829 .- 1095-3795. ; 62:24, s. R16239-R16242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic structure of a Cu monolayer buried in Ni fcc(100) is studied by means of x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies in combination with first principles calculations. The local character of the x-ray probes allows us to investigate changes in the chemical interaction for these ultrathin film systems. In comparison to bulk Cu, the occupied d states of a buried Cu monolayer, as mapped in the x-ray emission spectrum, remain mostly unaltered. The absorption spectrum on the other hand shows that the empty states of the buried Cu monolayer are modified, and instead resemble the unoccupied electronic density of bulk Ni. These findings agree well with our first principle electronic structure calculations and the results are interpreted in terms of short- and long-range hybridization.

  • Probing surface states of Cu/Ni thin films using x-ray absorption spectroscopy
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 63:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface and interface properties of Cu thin films (1–4 monolayers) deposited on Ni(100) have been extracted by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and analyzed in combination with ab initio density-functional calculations. An unoccupied Cu surface state is identified in an x-ray absorption spectra and studied as a function of film thickness. Experimental data is supported by calculations of the layer-resolved density of states and the results from this combined theoretical-experimental effort show that the surface state is almost entirely located on the atomic layer closest to the vacuum. Our results also indicate strong hybridization between unoccupied states at the Cu/Ni interface boundary.

  • Real-World Outcomes of Patients Starting Intravenous and Transitioning to Subcutaneous Vedolizumab in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Digestive Diseases and Sciences. - : Kluwer Academic Publishers. - 0163-2116 .- 1573-2568. ; 69:6, s. 2175-2183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Real-world data on starting intravenous (IV) vedolizumab (VDZ) and transitioning to subcutaneous (SC) treatment in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are scarce. AIMS: To assess treatment outcomes of patients with IBD starting IV VDZ and switching to SC VDZ in routine clinical care.METHODS: Adult patients with IBD switching from IV to SC VDZ treatment between 1 March 2020 and 31 December 2021 were identified from the Swedish IBD quality register. The primary outcome was SC VDZ persistence. Secondary outcomes included clinical remission, changes in quality of life (QoL) according to EuroQual 5-Dimensions 5-Levels (EQ-5D-5L) and the Short-Health Scale (SHS) and inflammatory markers, including faecal Calprotectin (FCP).RESULTS: Altogether, 406 patients with IBD (Crohn's disease, n = 181; ulcerative colitis, n = 225) were identified. After a median follow-up of 30 months from starting IV VDZ treatment, the persistence rates were 98%(178/181) in Crohn's disease and 94% (211/225) in ulcerative colitis. Most patients (84%) transitioned during maintenance therapy, and the median follow-up from switch to SC VDZ was 10 months. Compared to baseline, statistically significant improvements were observed in all domains of the SHS, EQ-5D index value and visual analogue scale. Median (interquartile range) FCP concentrations (μg/g) decreased from 459 (185-1001) to 65 (26-227) in Crohn's disease (n = 45; p < 0.001) and from 646 (152-1450) to 49 (20-275) in ulcerative colitis (n = 58; p < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Initiating IV VDZ and switching to SC treatment was associated with high persistence rates and improvements in measures of QoL and FCP. These findings are reassuring for patients who start IV VDZ and switch to SC VDZ.

  • Characterization of the metal-insulator interface of field-effect chemical sensors
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 93:12, s. 9760-9768
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The metal-insulator interface of hydrogen-sensitive metal-insulator-semiconductor capacitors, with SiO2 as the insulator and Pt as the metal contact, was discussed. It was found that the difference in hydrogen response between differently prepared devices was explained by a difference in concentration of available adsorption sites. The analysis showed that the concentration of Pt atoms in contact with the oxide affected both the hydrogen response and the metal-oxide adhesion.

  • Extended exome sequencing identifies BACH2 as a novel major risk locus for Addison's disease
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 286:6, s. 595-608
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Autoimmune disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Addison's disease, the adrenal glands are targeted by destructive autoimmunity. Despite being the most common cause of primary adrenal failure, little is known about its aetiology.METHODS: To understand the genetic background of Addison's disease, we utilized the extensively characterized patients of the Swedish Addison Registry. We developed an extended exome capture array comprising a selected set of 1853 genes and their potential regulatory elements, for the purpose of sequencing 479 patients with Addison's disease and 1394 controls.RESULTS: We identified BACH2 (rs62408233-A, OR = 2.01 (1.71-2.37), P = 1.66 × 10(-15) , MAF 0.46/0.29 in cases/controls) as a novel gene associated with Addison's disease development. We also confirmed the previously known associations with the HLA complex.CONCLUSION: Whilst BACH2 has been previously reported to associate with organ-specific autoimmune diseases co-inherited with Addison's disease, we have identified BACH2 as a major risk locus in Addison's disease, independent of concomitant autoimmune diseases. Our results may enable future research towards preventive disease treatment.

  • Synthesis, characterization and optical power limiting behaviour of phenylazo- and 4-nitrophenylazo-tetrahydroxytetrathiacalix[4]arene
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry. - 0959-9428 .- 1364-5501. ; 11:12, s. 3014-3017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • p-Tetrakis(4-nitrophenylazo) tetrahydroxytetrathiacalix[4] arene and p-tetrakis(phenylazo) tetrahydroxytetrathiacalix[4] arene were prepared and fully characterized using H-1 and C-13 NMR, mass spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The solid-state structure of p-tetrakis(4-nitrophenylazo) tetrahydroxytetrathiacalix[4] arene was investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallized in the triclinic system (space group: P (1) over bar). z-Scan experiments were performed on the p-tetrakis(4-nitrophenylazo) tetrahydroxytetrathiacalix[ 4] arene showing non linear absorption due to two photon absorption with a TPA cross-section of about 50 x 10(-50) cm(4) s per photon. Optical power limiting measurements on the p-tetrakis( phenylazo) tetrahydroxytetrathiacalix[ 4] arene at 532 nm (48% linear transmission) was found to limit the energy to similar to9 muJ.
