  • On the use and usefulness of theories and perspectives: A reply to Brunsson
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 37:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper is a reply to Brunsson (2021b), who wrote a commentary on the edited volume Theories and Perspectives in Business Administration (Eriksson-Zetterquist, Hansson & Nilsson, 2020). Although we agree with Brunsson on several points, we nevertheless argue that students need to learn about different theories and perspectives. First, the use of theories and perspectives as analytical tools will help students to describe and analyze a certain phenomenon. Second, to be able to theorize students need to acquire fundamental knowledge of the background and the specificities of the theory or perspective in use. Third, an awareness of the diversity of theories and perspectives that exists within the business administration discipline is a prerequisite to being able to contribute to the creation of new knowledge. Finally, we do not agree with Brunsson that the multitude of theories and perspectives in the business administration discipline is a sign of "an inferiority complex". It is the outcome of the vitality and viability of the discipline.

  • Outroduction. A research agenda on collegiality in university settings.
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Research in the Sociology of Organizations. - 0733-558X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collegiality is the modus operandi of universities. Collegiality is central to academic freedom and scientific quality. In this way, collegiality also contributes to the good functioning of universities’ contribution to society and democracy. In this concluding paper of the special issue on collegiality, we summarize the main findings and takeaways from our collective studies. We summarize the main challenges and contestations to collegiality and to universities, but also document lines of resistance, activation, and maintenance. We depict varieties of collegiality and conclude by emphasizing that future research needs to be based on an appreciation of this variation. We argue that it is essential to incorporate such a variation-sensitive perspective into discussions on academic freedom and scientific quality and highlight themes surfaced by the different studies that remain under-explored in extant literature: institutional trust, field-level studies of collegiality, and collegiality and communication. Finally, we offer some remarks on methodological and theoretical implications of this research and conclude by summarizing our research agenda in a list of themes.

  • Women and work in family soap operas
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Gender, Work and Organization. - : Wiley. - 0968-6673. ; 20:3, s. 267-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The starting point of this article is the assumption that images of work and organizing produced by popular culture both reflect and shape actual practices. Among various genres of popular culture, soap operas deserve more attention. This article analyses three local soap operas: one Italian, one Swedish and one South African. All three focus on family life — a focus typical for the genre. We trace the side topic of women at work and women and work, on the assumption that its marginality renders it less likely to contain intentional messages from the creators of the series, and thus more likely to reflect the taken-for-granted beliefs underpinning everyday life and contributing to their reproduction and maintenance. We trace the series' connections to local contexts but also look for commonalities that may be characteristic of this genre of popular culture.

  • Bureaucracy under pressure : New(s) management practices in central government agencies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Management Journal. - : Elsevier. - 0263-2373 .- 1873-5681.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How various central government agencies (CGAs) in Sweden respond to the contemporary and highly digitalized media landscape and explore intricate patterns of the ambiguity in organizational and media relations are discussed in this study. Organizational responses caused by the perceptions of the media landscape on governmental agencies are analyzed as a process of bureaucratization. This study suggests that the agencies do not attempt to defend themselves; their efforts are directed toward maintaining internal trust and trust of the public. The studied responses turned out to result in decision-making aspects as preemptive measures, casting light on the significances of the ideal hierarchical authority. Furthermore, the extent of openness in relation to the communication showed rule-based actions. Additionally, the consequences of the media pressure for the more general codes of conduct among the bureaucrats led to the ideal of professional staffing. Our contribution is twofold. First, we argue that the contemporary media landscape – including all institutionalized (i.e., both digital and conventional) forms, structures, platforms, and interfaces – has led to an increased self-control in CGAs; and secondly, that the bureaucratization turns professional employees into “passionate bureaucrats.”

  • Can changes to gender equality be sustained?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Gender, Work and Organization. - : Wiley. - 0968-6673. ; 23:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to discuss how changes to gender equality in organizing can be made sustainable. Numerous studies have reported on projects which have not succeeded in their efforts to implement gender equality. In this paper, we analyse the results from two programmes which aimed to increase equal opportunities among private and public sector organizations. Theoretically, the study is based on the framework of doing gender, which is combined with insights from studies using the translation model of organizational change. The translation model of organizational change enables investigation of formal and informal processes within an institutionalized setting. By studying those aspects that were stabilized into an institution within these two programmes, as well as those which were not, the approaches that had become sustainable for the programmes in the long term could be discerned. When comparing the two programmes, it became apparent that complications arose at the point at which the theoretical aims of gender equality were translated into actions. The analysis of the outcomes of these programmes indicates, however, that, even though the formal goals were not reached, equal opportunities within the participating organizations did benefit from these programmes.

  • Collegiality in modern universities – the composition of governance ideals and practices
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: NordSTEP - Nordic Journal of Studies in Ecucational Policy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2002-0317. ; :2-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The questions of how universities are governed and how they should be governed have recently gained attention throughout Europe. The history of universities shows a diffused pattern of repeated reform efforts. However, this situation has more or less exploded since the turn of the century, bringing in new modes of organising. In short we can observe a diffusion of more managerial forms of organising, leading to a situation where different governance ideals co-act. In this paper we analyse the interplay of several governance ideals as they play out in practice. We begin and end the essay by noting that collegiality is a modern, efficient and practical form of governance, but it never works entirely on its own; rather it interacts with other modes of governance. After an introduction of diverse modes of governance, analysed as ideal type models, we exemplify how those diverse modes mix in practices of governance and organising. A more theoretical argument that runs through the paper is a critique of the dominance of ideal types of discussions on university governance and in organisation theory more generally, to the extent that those ideal types tend to be reified.

  • Doing of gender and scientific knowledge production.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Equality, diversity and inclusion: An international journal. - : Emerald. - 2040-7149. ; 32:2, s. 217-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose - In this paper, I will discuss some of my experiences from research and teaching that relate to the special circumstances of doing gender research. Design/methodology/approach - When reading about Styhre’s and Tienari’s experiences, I am not so surprise by but rather concerned about the resemblance and reflections evoked by the text vis-à-vis my own experiences of doing research in the gender field. During recent decades, I have had the opportunity to explore various organizing issues in my research, from technology and organizational change to gender and intersectionality. This provides me with both an inside and outside perspective on some of the specificities which recur in the field of gender studies. Findings - Doing gender research enables men and women to ‘become with’ women, men and other people. When able to respond to other people with respect, the researcher can "become with" the studied one. By going into the experiences previously shared by other scholars doing gender studies, and by reflecting upon these, the opportunities for men and women to "become with" will most likely increase. Originality/value - In a performative way, "doing gender" includes a way of recognizing the context in which I am situated. When this position is challenged, things start to happen. Whether one is being challenged as a woman, as a man, as a researcher, or for not understanding gender in the proper feminist way, the conditions of one’s comprehension of doing gender are called into question. Reflexivity is thus – as Styhre and Tienari claim – a product of social encounters.
