  • On the influence of heart rate and coupling interval prematurity on heart rate turbulence
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. - 1558-2531. ; 64:2, s. 302-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Heart rate turbulence (HRT) has been successfully explored for cardiac risk stratification. While HRT is known to be influenced by the heart rate (HR) and the coupling interval (CI), nonconcordant results have been reported on how the CI influences HRT. The purpose of this study is to investigate HRT changes in terms of CI and HR by means of an especially designed protocol. Methods: A dataset was acquired from 11 patients with structurally normal hearts for which CI was altered by different pacing trains and HR by isoproterenol during electrophysiological study (EPS). The protocol was designed so that, first, the effect of HR changes on HRT and, second, the combined effect of HR and CI could be explored. As a complement to the EPS dataset, a database of 24-h Holters from 61 acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients was studied for the purpose of assessing risk. Data analysis was performed by using different nonlinear ridge regression models, and the relevance of model variables was assessed using resampling methods. The EPS subjects, with and without isoproterenol, were analyzed separately. Results: The proposed nonlinear regression models were found to account for the influence of HR and CI on HRT, both in patients undergoing EPS without isoproterenol and in low-risk AMI patients, whereas this influence was absent in high-risk AMI patients. Moreover, model coefficients related to CI were not statistically significant, p > 0.05, on EPS subjects with isoproterenol. Conclusion: The observed relationship between CI and HRT, being in agreement with the baroreflex hypothesis, was statistically significant (p < 0.05), when decoupling the effect of HR and normalizing the CI by the HR. Significance: The results of this study can help to provide new risk indicators that take into account physiological influence on HRT, as well as to model how this influence changes in different cardiac conditions.

  • Robotic-Based Well-Being Monitoring and Coaching System for the Elderly in Their Daily Activities
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI. - 1424-8220. ; 21:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasingly ageing population and the tendency to live alone have led science and engineering researchers to search for health care solutions. In the COVID 19 pandemic, the elderly have been seriously affected in addition to suffering from isolation and its associated and psychological consequences. This paper provides an overview of the RobWell (Robotic-based Well-Being Monitoring and Coaching System for the Elderly in their Daily Activities) system. It is a system focused on the field of artificial intelligence for mood prediction and coaching. This paper presents a general overview of the initially proposed system as well as the preliminary results related to the home automation subsystem, autonomous robot navigation and mood estimation through machine learning prior to the final system integration, which will be discussed in future works. The main goal is to improve their mental well-being during their daily household activities. The system is composed of ambient intelligence with intelligent sensors, actuators and a robotic platform that interacts with the user. A test smart home system was set up in which the sensors, actuators and robotic platform were integrated and tested. For artificial intelligence applied to mood prediction, we used machine learning to classify several physiological signals into different moods. In robotics, it was concluded that the ROS autonomous navigation stack and its autodocking algorithm were not reliable enough for this task, while the robot's autonomy was sufficient. Semantic navigation, artificial intelligence and computer vision alternatives are being sought.

  • TemplateFlow: FAIR-sharing of multi-scale, multi-species brain models.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature methods. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1548-7105 .- 1548-7091. ; 19:12, s. 1568-1571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reference anatomies of the brain ('templates') and corresponding atlases are the foundation for reporting standardized neuroimaging results. Currently, there is no registry of templates and atlases; therefore, the redistribution of these resources occurs either bundled within existing software or in ad hoc ways such as downloads from institutional sites and general-purpose data repositories. We introduce TemplateFlow as a publicly available framework for human and non-human brain models. The framework combines an open database with software for access, management, and vetting, allowing scientists to share their resources under FAIR-findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable-principles. TemplateFlow enables multifaceted insights into brains across species, and supports multiverse analyses testing whether results generalize across standard references, scales, and in the long term, species.

  • Bifunctional and regenerable molecular electrode for water electrolysis at neutral pH
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 11:25, s. 13331-13340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The instability of molecular electrodes under oxidative/reductive conditions and insufficient understanding of the metal oxide-based systems have slowed down the progress of H2-based fuels. Efficient regeneration of the electrode's performance after prolonged use is another bottleneck of this research. This work represents the first example of a bifunctional and electrochemically regenerable molecular electrode which can be used for the unperturbed production of H2 from water. Pyridyl linkers with flexible arms (–CH2–CH2–) on modified fluorine-doped carbon cloth (FCC) were used to anchor a highly active ruthenium electrocatalyst [RuII(mcbp)(H2O)2] (1) [mcbp2− = 2,6-bis(1-methyl-4-(carboxylate)benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine]. The pyridine unit of the linker replaces one of the water molecules of 1, which resulted in RuPFCC (ruthenium electrocatalyst anchored on –CH2–CH2–pyridine modified FCC), a high-performing electrode for oxygen evolution reaction [OER, overpotential of ∼215 mV] as well as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, overpotential of ∼330 mV) at pH 7. A current density of ∼8 mA cm−2 at 2.06 V (vs. RHE) and ∼−6 mA cm−2 at −0.84 V (vs. RHE) with only 0.04 wt% loading of ruthenium was obtained. OER turnover of >7.4 × 103 at 1.81 V in 48 h and HER turnover of >3.6 × 103 at −0.79 V in 3 h were calculated. The activity of the OER anode after 48 h use could be electrochemically regenerated to ∼98% of its original activity while it serves as a HE cathode (evolving hydrogen) for 8 h. This electrode design can also be used for developing ultra-stable molecular electrodes with exciting electrochemical regeneration features, for other proton-dependent electrochemical processes.

  • Cobalt Electrocatalyst on Fluorine Doped Carbon Cloth – a Robust and Partially Regenerable Anode for Water Oxidation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ChemCatChem. - : Wiley. - 1867-3880 .- 1867-3899. ; 14:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The low stability of the electrocatalysts at water oxidation (WO) conditions and the use of expensive noble metals have obstructed large-scale H2 production from water. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic WO activity of a cobalt-containing, water-soluble molecular WO electrocatalyst [CoII(mcbp)(OH2)] (1) [mcbp2−=2,6-bis(1-methyl-4-(carboxylate)benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine] in homogeneous conditions (overpotential of 510 mV at pH 7 phosphate buffer) and after anchoring it on pyridine-modified fluorine-doped carbon cloth (PFCC). The formation of cobalt phosphate was identified only after 4 h continuous oxygen evolution in homogeneous conditions. Interestingly, a significant enhancement of the stability and WO activity (current density of 5.4 mA/cm2 at 1.75 V) was observed for 1 after anchoring onto PFCC, resulting in a turnover (TO) of >3.6×103 and average TOF of 0.05 s−1 at 1.55 V (pH 7) over 20 h. A total TO of >21×103 over 8 days was calculated. The electrode allowed regeneration of∼ 85 % of the WO activity electrochemically after 36 h of continuous oxygen evolution.

  • Dynamics of excited electronic states in functional materials
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Non-equilibrium processes involving excited electron states are very common in nature. This work summarizes some of the theoretical developments available to study them in finite and ex-tended systems. The focus lays in the class of Mixed Quantum-Classical methods that describe electrons as quantum-mechanical particles but approximate ionic motion to behave classically. In particular, Non-Adiabatic Molecular Dynamics and Real Time Density Functional Theory are described and applied to answer questions regarding non-equilibrium dynamics in diverse functional materials. First, the effect of phase boundaries and defects in monolayer MoS2 sam-ples is studied. This material has been suggested as a good candidate to substitute silicon in many applications, such as flexible electronics and solar cells. It is known that defects and dif-ferent polymorphs are present in experimental samples, and therefore it is extremely important to understand how realistic samples perform. We present how the electron-hole recombination times are accelerated in presence of defects, as well as how the structural changes in sam-ples that mix several phases of MoS2 affect their electronic structure. After that, rectangular graphene nanoflakes are explored. As an application to finite systems, we show in rectangu-lar graphene nanoflakes how different magnetic configurations have distinct optical absorption spectra and how this can be used for opto-electronic applications. Furthermore, the high har-monic generation for different magnetic couplings is studied, showing how some harmonics can be suppressed or enhanced depending on the underlying electronic structure. Finally, dif-fuse scattering in SnSe is investigated in an experimental collaboration in order to understand how phonon-phonon interactions affect the scattering dynamics, which may lead to profound insight into its thermoelectric properties.

  • Tailoring the opto-electronic response of graphene nanoflakes by size and shape optimization
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 22:15, s. 8212-8218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The long spin-diffusion length, spin-lifetime and excellent optical absorption coefficient of graphene provide an excellent platform for building opto-electronic devices and spin-based logic in a nanometer regime. In this study, by using density functional theory and its time-dependent version, we provide a detailed analysis of how the size and shape of graphene nanoflakes can be used to alter their magnetic structures and optical properties. As the edges of zigzag graphene nanoribbons are known to align anti-ferromagnetically and armchair nanoribbons are typically non-magnetic, a combination of both in a nanoflake geometry can be used to optimize the ground-state magnetic structure and tailor the exchange coupling decisive for ferro- or anti-ferromagnetic edge magnetism, thereby offering the possibility to optimize the external fields needed to switch magnetic ordering. Most importantly, we show that the magnetic state alters the optical response of the flake leading to the possibility of opto-spintronic applications.

  • BIDS apps: Improving ease of use, accessibility, and reproducibility of neuroimaging data analysis methods
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PloS Computational Biology. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-734X .- 1553-7358. ; 13:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rate of progress in human neurosciences is limited by the inability to easily apply a wide range of analysis methods to the plethora of different datasets acquired in labs around the world. In this work, we introduce a framework for creating, testing, versioning and archiving portable applications for analyzing neuroimaging data organized and described in compliance with the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS). The portability of these applications (BIDS Apps) is achieved by using container technologies that encapsulate all binary and other dependencies in one convenient package. BIDS Apps run on all three major operating systems with no need for complex setup and configuration and thanks to the comprehensiveness of the BIDS standard they require little manual user input. Previous containerized data processing solutions were limited to single user environments and not compatible with most multi-tenant High Performance Computing systems. BIDS Apps overcome this limitation by taking advantage of the Singularity container technology. As a proof of concept, this work is accompanied by 22 ready to use BIDS Apps, packaging a diverse set of commonly used neuroimaging algorithms.

  • Long-term characterization of persistent atrial fibrillation: wave morphology, frequency, and irregularity analysis
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0140-0118 .- 1741-0444. ; 52:12, s. 1053-1060
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Short-term properties of atrial fibrillation (AF) frequency, f-wave morphology, and irregularity parameters have been thoroughly studied, but not long-term properties. In the present work, f-wave morphology is characterized by principal component analysis, introducing a novel temporal parameter defined by the cumulative normalized variance of the three largest principal components . Based on 7-day recordings from nine patients with stable chronic heart failure and persistent AF, long-term properties were studied in terms of , AF frequency, and sample entropy . The main result of the present study is that detection of circadian rhythms depends on the parameter considered: rhythms were found in six and five (AF frequency) patients, but not always in the same patient. Another important result is that circadian rhythms detected in 7-day recordings could not always be detected in 24-h periods, thus shedding new light on the results in previous studies which all were based on 24-h recordings. Infradian rhythms were found in four and one (AF frequency) patients.
