  • Key Comparison EURAMET.L-K1.2011 Measurement of gauge blocks by interferometry
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Metrologia. - 0026-1394 .- 1681-7575. ; 53:1A
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The key comparison EURAMET.L-K1.2011 on gauge blocks was carried out in the framework of a EURAMET project starting in 2012 and ending in 2015. It involved the participation of 24 National Metrology Institutes from Europe and Egypt, respectively. 38 gauge blocks of steel and ceramic with nominal central lengths between 0.5 mm and 500 mm were circulated. The comparison was conducted in two loops with two sets of artifacts. A statistical technique for linking the reference values was applied. As a consequence the reference value of one loop is influenced by the measurements of the other loop although they did not even see the artifacts of the others. This influence comes solely from three "linking laboratories" which measure both sets of artifacts. In total there were 44 results were not fully consistent with the reference values. This represents 10% of the full set of 420 results which is a considerable high number. At least 12 of them are clearly outliers where the participants have been informed by the pilot as soon as possible. The comparison results help to support the calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) of the laboratories involved in the CIPM MRA.

  • Trial of Deferiprone in Parkinson’s Disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: New England Journal of Medicine. - : Massachusetts Medical Society. - 0028-4793 .- 1533-4406. ; 387:22, s. 2045-2055
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUNDIron content is increased in the substantia nigra of persons with Parkinson's disease and may contribute to the pathophysiology of the disorder. Early research suggests that the iron chelator deferiprone can reduce nigrostriatal iron content in persons with Parkinson's disease, but its effects on disease progression are unclear.METHODSWe conducted a multicenter, phase 2, randomized, double-blind trial involving participants with newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease who had never received levodopa. Participants were assigned (in a 1:1 ratio) to receive oral deferiprone at a dose of 15 mg per kilogram of body weight twice daily or matched placebo for 36 weeks. Dopaminergic therapy was withheld unless deemed necessary for symptom control. The primary outcome was the change in the total score on the Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS; range, 0 to 260, with higher scores indicating more severe impairment) at 36 weeks. Secondary and exploratory clinical outcomes at up to 40 weeks included measures of motor and nonmotor disability. Brain iron content measured with the use of magnetic resonance imaging was also an exploratory outcome.RESULTSA total of 372 participants were enrolled; 186 were assigned to receive deferiprone and 186 to receive placebo. Progression of symptoms led to the initiation of dopaminergic therapy in 22.0% of the participants in the deferiprone group and 2.7% of those in the placebo group. The mean MDS-UPDRS total score at baseline was 34.3 in the deferiprone group and 33.2 in the placebo group and increased (worsened) by 15.6 points and 6.3 points, respectively (difference, 9.3 points; 95% confidence interval, 6.3 to 12.2; P<0.001). Nigrostriatal iron content decreased more in the deferiprone group than in the placebo group. The main serious adverse events with deferiprone were agranulocytosis in 2 participants and neutropenia in 3 participants.CONCLUSIONSIn participants with early Parkinson's disease who had never received levodopa and in whom treatment with dopaminergic medications was not planned, deferiprone was associated with worse scores in measures of parkinsonism than those with placebo over a period of 36 weeks.

  • Interactions between hairy rod anionic conjugated polyelectrolytes and nonionic alkyloxyethylene surfactants in aqueous solution: Observations from cloud point behaviour
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-7103 .- 0021-9797. ; 315:2, s. 805-809
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of three anionic, hairy-rod fluorene based conjugated polyelectrolytes on the cloud points of the alkyloxyethylene surfactants C10E3, C12E4, C12E5, and C12E6 has been studied in aqueous solution. Although the association behaviour of these rigid polymers with surfactants is different from that of more flexible polyelectrolytes, both types of polymers are seen to increase the cloud points, probably as a consequence of associative interactions. The possible importance of Coulombic interactions is suggested by the decrease in cloud points with these systems in the presence of NaCl. With the conjugated polyelectrolytes, the effect appears to be most pronounced with poly [9,9-bis(4-phenoxybutylsulfonate)fluorene-co-2,5-thienylene], which may result from specific interactions between oxyethylene groups and the thiophene ring. The value of cloud point behaviour in designing water based formulations for preparation of devices of these conjugated polyelectrolytes is discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

  • Strongly outer actions of amenable groups on Z-stable nuclear C*-algebras
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal des Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-7824. ; 162, s. 76-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Let A be a separable, unital, simple, Z-stable, nuclear C*-algebra, and let alpha: G -+ Aut(A) be an action of a discrete, countable, amenable group. Suppose that the orbits of the action of G on T(A) are finite and that their cardinality is bounded. We show that the following are equivalent: (1) alpha is strongly outer; (2) alpha (R) idZ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. If G is moreover residually finite, the above conditions are also equivalent to (3) alpha (R) idZ has finite Rokhlin dimension (in fact, at most 2). If partial differential eT(A) is furthermore compact, has finite covering dimension, and the orbit space partial differential eT(A)/G is Hausdorff, we generalize results by Matui and Sato to show that alpha is cocycle conjugate to alpha (R) idZ, even if alpha is not strongly outer. In particular, in this case the equivalences above hold for alpha in place of alpha (R) idZ. In the course of the proof, we develop equivariant versions of complemented partitions of unity and uniform property Gamma as technical tools of independent interest. (c) 2022 The Author(s).
