- This special issue is the result of a workshop on the effects of foreign direct investment on the development of entrepreneurial and managerial capabilities in host economies. Our aim was, rather than to look at the more generic competencies of firms, to call attention to the knowledge, skills and abilities embodied in individuals and, particularly, in managerial and technical professionals working for subsidiaries of multinationals or for local companies with foreign investors. We specifically addressed the question of to what extent these professionals' capabilities could have been born, developed or shaped by working for, or alongside, foreign firms. This may explain in part the rapid ascension of the so-called dragon or new multinationals from late industrializing and emerging economies. Foreign investment is considered to have stimulated economic modernization and industrial progress in a Gerschenkronian way, thus advancing catching-up with traditional economic leaders. Our approach to the effects of foreign investment on host markets, therefore, would contribute not only providing insight into corporate internationalization strategies and international human resource management, but also into how industrial progress and economic modernization spread to new areas and regions. We aim to address these two traditional research questions of management and economic scholarship from a microeconomic and hence business-history-oriented perspective, as well as beyond these to professionals and education systems, through the analysis of knowledge transfer at country, industry and firm level.

Prior to the modern welfare state, many large companies provided extensive welfare programmes for their employees. In this article, such welfare programmes–or corporate welfarism–in Finnish manufacturing firms in the early 20th century are the focus of attention. I analyse the content of these programmes and how they changed over time as part of the modernization and professionalization of management and industrial and societal change. I also discuss how company managers perceived the role of welfare provisions in corporate development and what happened with these programmes when the first steps towards the modern welfare state were taken. I show that these programmes started as a necessity and part of industrial paternalism, but gradually became part of labour management, in particular for the creation of a loyal workforce and productivity improvements. These programmes often developed in collaboration with local municipalities, which led to intertwined relationships at the local level, marked by both trust and tension in local communities. Once general welfare reforms emerged, companies often abandoned their voluntary programmes, while some services were taken over by the municipalities. I also ask to what extent these programmes were managerial strategies to counteract growing state involvement in their affairs.

- In the 1970s and today, the dominant narrative is that Finland has a high rate of interlocking directorships and dense networks. Using a unique data set to examine network density and big linkers, we show how Finnish big business networks change over the twentieth century. Language is an important dividing factor, resulting in two spheres within industry-bank networks. There is indeed a dense ‘core’ network of big banks, insurance companies and manufacturers, but many companies are outside of this network. The network also gradually loosened. We conclude that Finland’s corporate network is more fragmented than the ‘dominant narrative’ would indicate.
