  • The association between TMAO, CMPF, and clinical outcomes in advanced chronic kidney disease : results from the European QUALity (EQUAL) Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Elsevier BV. - 0002-9165 .- 1938-3207. ; 116:6, s. 1842-1851
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite from red meat and fish consumption, plays a role in promoting cardiovascular events. However, data regarding TMAO and its impact on clinical outcomes are inconclusive, possibly due to its undetermined dietary source. Objectives: We hypothesized that circulating TMAO derived from fish intake might cause less harm compared with red meat sources by examining the concomitant level of 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropionate (CMPF), a known biomarker of fish intake, and investigated the association between TMAO, CMPF, and outcomes. Methods: Patients were recruited from the European QUALity (EQUAL) Study on treatment in advanced chronic kidney disease among individuals aged ≥65 y whose estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) had dropped for the first time to ≤20 mL/min per 1.73 m2 during the last 6 mo. The association between TMAO, CMPF, and outcomes including all-cause mortality and kidney replacement therapy (KRT) was assessed among 737 patients. Patients were further stratified by median cutoffs of TMAO and CMPF, suggesting high/low red meat and fish intake. Results: During a median of 39 mo of follow-up, 232 patients died. Higher TMAO was independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (multivariable HR: 1.46; 95% CI: 1.17, 1.83). Higher CMPF was associated with a reduced risk of both all-cause mortality (HR: 0.79; 95% CI: 0.71, 0.89) and KRT (HR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.71, 0.90), independently of TMAO and other clinically relevant confounders. In comparison to patients with low TMAO and CMPF, patients with low TMAO and high CMPF had reduced risk of all-cause mortality (adjusted HR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.31, 0.73), whereas those with high TMAO and high CMPF showed no association across adjusted models. Conclusions: High CMPF conferred an independent role in health benefits and might even counteract the unfavorable association between TMAO and outcomes. Whether higher circulating CMPF concentrations are due to fish consumption, and/or if CMPF is a protective factor, remains to be verified.

  • Extreme broad He ii emission at high and low redshifts : the dominant role of VMS in NGC 3125-A1 and CDFS131717
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 523:3, s. 3949-3966
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Super star cluster (SSC) A1 (3.1 x10(5) M-circle dot) in NGC 3125 has one of the strongest ( EW = 4.6 +/- 0.5 A) broad ( F W H M = 1131 +/- 40 km s(-1)) He II lambda 1640 emission lines in the nearby universe and constitutes an important template for interpreting observations of extreme He II emitters out to redshifts of z similar to 2 - 3. We use Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) observations of A1 to show that there is no significant contamination of the He II line with nebular emission and that the line is redshifted by 121 +/- 17 km s(-1) relative to ISM lines. We compare the COS G130M + G160M observations of A1 to recent binary BPASS and single-star Charlot & Bruzual (C&B) simple stellar population (SSP) models with very massive stars (VMS) of up to 300 M-circle dot. On the other hand, we suggest why BPASS models fail to reproduce A1's He II emission. On the other hand, a C&B model with Z = 0.008, age = 2.2 Myr, and VMS approaching the Eddington limit provides an excellent fit to the He II emission and fits reasonably well C III lambda 1175, N V lambda lambda 1238, 1241, and C IV lambda lambda 1548, 1551. We present O V lambda 1371 line-profile predictions showing that this line constitutes an important tracer of youth and VMS in galaxies. Finally, we discuss the presence of VMS in CDFS131717, a highly star-forming low-metallicity galaxy located at z = 3.071, which has a tentative detection of O V absorption and strong broad He II emission. These features are rare and hint to the presence of short-lived VMS in the galaxy. Our results show the effect of the latest developments of stellar wind theory and the importance of accounting for VMS in models.

  • Project 1640 Observations of Brown Dwarf GJ 758 B : Near-infrared Spectrum and Atmospheric Modeling
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 838:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nearby Sun-like star GJ 758 hosts a cold substellar companion, GJ 758 B, at a projected separation of l less than or similar to 30 au, previously detected in high-contrast multi-band photometric observations. In order to better constrain the companion's physical characteristics, we acquired the first low-resolution (R similar to 50) near-infrared spectrum of it using the high-contrast hyperspectral imaging instrument Project 1640 on Palomar Observatory's 5 m Hale telescope. We obtained simultaneous images in 32 wavelength channels covering the Y, J, and H bands (similar to 9521770 nm), and used data processing techniques based on principal component analysis to efficiently subtract chromatic background speckle-noise. GJ 758 B was detected in four epochs during 2013 and 2014. Basic astrometric measurements confirm its apparent northwest trajectory relative to the primary star, with no clear signs of orbital curvature. Spectra of SpeX/IRTF observed T dwarfs were compared to the combined spectrum of GJ 758 B, with chi(2) minimization suggesting a best fit for spectral type T7.0 +/- 1.0, but with a shallow minimum over T5T8. Fitting of synthetic spectra from the BT-Settl13 model atmospheres gives an effective temperature T-eff = 741 +/- 25 K and surface gravity log g=4.3 +/- 0.5 dex (cgs). Our derived best-fit spectral type and effective temperature from modeling of the low-resolution spectrum suggest a slightly earlier and hotter companion than previous findings from photometric data, but do not rule out current results, and confirm GJ 758 B as one of the coolest sub-stellar companions to a Sun-like star to date.
